My elementary school teacher taught us many interesting things in our Japanese class lessons.\u00a0 One thing he taught us that I still remember was how to punctuate a sentence.\u00a0 He said if you don\u2019t know what you want to say you may be misunderstood completely. And he wrote this on the paper.\u3000\u3053\u3053\u3067\u306f\u304d\u3082\u306e\u3092\u306c\u3044\u3067\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\u3002<\/strong>Then he showed us a picture of a bath house.\u00a0 Some of you read \u300c\u3053\u3053\u3067\u3001\u5c65\u7269\u3092\u8131\u3044\u3067\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\u300d\u305d\u3057\u3066\u4e0b\u99c4\u7bb1\u306b\u5165\u308c\u3066\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\u3068\u8a00\u3046\u308f\u3051\u3067\u3059\u3002But some of you read this as, \u300c\u3053\u3053\u3067\u5c65\u7269\u3092\u8131\u3044\u3067\u304f\u3060\u3055\u3044\u300d\u4e0b\u99c4\u7bb1\u306e\u524d\u3067\u7740\u7269\u3092\u8131\u3050\u3068\u306f\u5909\u306a\u3053\u3067\u306f\u3042\u308a\u307e\u305b\u3093\u304b\u300d\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now I would like to hold up a sign and have you look at it.\u00a0 Take a moment to read what it says:\u3000<\/strong>Hold up a sign that reads GODISNOWHERE)\u3000<\/strong>What is it that you see?\u00a0 I would guess that the majority of you see a sign that reads: GOD IS NOWHERE.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When given the choice, it is the human tendency to more see this in a more negative way.<\/strong>That\u2019s the case today\u2026, just as it was in Mark\u2019s day.\u00a0 In today\u2019s gospel lesson from Mark, the subject is a man who was not a part of \u201ctheir\u201d group.\u00a0 And although he was not a part of \u201ctheir\u201d group, he was doing part of their work.\u00a0 He was casting out demons in Jesus\u2019 name.\u00a0 So they stopped him from healing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You see they were more concerned with the negative aspects of him not being a part of \u201ctheir\u201d group.\u00a0 Instead, of seeing him in a positive light and realizing the positive aspects of his work that he was doing– healing the people, but not just healing the people, \u00a0but he was healing people in \u00a0the name of Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here was someone doing a wonderful thing and giving credit to Jesus Christ, and Jesus\u2019 own disciples were upset.\u00a0 I doubt that the man who was healed was upset.\u00a0 And from the account in Mark\u2019s gospel, I know that Jesus wasn\u2019t upset.\u00a0<\/strong>Jesus does not deny that this man had not been a part of their group.\u00a0 But he is quick to point out that if he is not against them\u2026, then he must be for them.\u00a0 In fact, even now, he needs more people to be for him than against him.\u00a0 The human tendency of the disciples was to look at the negatives.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jesus was saying to his disciples, \u201cLook at the positive aspects.\u201d\u00a0 The disciples looked at the outsider who was healing and said: \u201cGod Is No Where\u201d in these actions; while Jesus was trying to say, \u201cGod Is Now Here\u201d in this healing.\u00a0 Like I said, unfortunately too often, human nature tends to lead us towards the negative side of a situation instead of the positive aspects.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The end of today\u2019s gospel lesson talks about salt.\u00a0 When it comes to looking at the negatives, salt has certainly gotten negative images today, especially our awareness concerning health and a good diet.\u00a0 Most people will agree that too much salt is not good for you.\u00a0 They say that salt encourages your body to hold water, thus increasing your body weight.\u00a0 Salt causes you to have high blood pressure which is unhealthy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are many negative aspects that are attributed to the use of salt.\u00a0 I heard that only 5% of salt is used in food, but it\u2019s that small 5% that gives salt its bad reputation.<\/strong>However, salt also has many positive qualities.\u00a0 All humans and animals need some salt to be healthy.\u00a0 Salt is also used in meat packing, sausage making and fish curing. Salt is used to cure and preserve hides.\u00a0 In the chemical industry salt is used to manufacture acid and chlorine.\u00a0 Did you know salt is used in making soap?\u00a0 And the medical industry relies heavily on salt solutions for treating various infections and diseases.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So Jesus tells us that salt is good.\u00a0 He is speaking of being salted with the fire of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 Unfortunately, even in this Christian context\/usage, too many people elect to be on a \u201csalt \u2013free diet\u201d.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

They say that they are Christians\u2026, but they have lost their saltiness.\u00a0 They don\u2019t permit the Holy Spirit to work through them.\u00a0 They have lost their enthusiasm\u2026, the aliveness of their faith.\u00a0 Part of that is due to the fact that people do tend to emphasize the Negative instead of looking towards the Positive.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Look at the situation of the Israelites in today\u2019s Old Testament lesson from the Book of Numbers.\u00a0 The Israelites wandering around in the wilderness are griping about their menu, and remembering when they had fish, melons, cucumbers, onions and garlic.\u00a0 Now all they have to eat is Manna.\u00a0 They look at Moses and say: \u201cGod Is No Where\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In order to help relieve this discontent, he calls together 70 leaders of the group.\u00a0 He was probably reminding them of how they have been freed from their bondage to slavery and have been chosen as God\u2019s own people\u2026, of how they were being led to the promised land \u2026, of how they have been assured salvation.\u00a0 He was telling them that: \u201cGOD IS NOW HERE.\u201d\u00a0 But they were worried about not having onions and garlic.<\/strong>Human nature too often tends to lead us towards the negative side of situations.\u00a0 Jesus, however, is constantly trying to pull us over to the positive side, the side of hope and of a bright future ahead.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are capable of looking at the positive side of a situation when we really want to.\u00a0 I challenge you to keep this in mind in the life of our congregation.\u00a0 We are a small worship group.\u00a0 We have a worship attendance of between 20 to 25 people on any given Sunday.\u00a0\u00a0 But most of us are involved in many aspects of this church\u2019s life, such as visitation ministry of prayer and visitation, choir Friendship Task Group, flower arrangements and painting and in the past you had even a cooking class.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We have three Bible study groups and we have many joint projects with our English speaking members.\u00a0 We indeed lead the Care Connection Ministry with just about all of our Japanese members signing up for this ministry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Actually, this Japanese Ministry here at LCR is one of the earliest ministries of any ethnic ministry within the English congregations of the ELCA and this is the trend of many congregations today.<\/strong>Because many of us like to hear the Gospel in our own language we continue to attend and support our Japanese Ministry here at LCR.\u00a0 This is not a bad thing, this is a positive thing because many Japanese people want to know about Jesus and are looking for a congregation where they feel warmth, love, acceptance and are very comfortable.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So let us pose this question once again.\u00a0 How are we looking at the sentence GODISNOWHERE are we looking at this sentence as– \u201cGod Is No Where\u201d or are we now looking at the sentence as– \u201cGod Is Now Here\u201d. \u00a0Keep a positive outlook in life and in all that you do!\u00a0 Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n
