Grace and Peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
\nI would like to ask you two questions. Who invited you to come to church? Was it your parents, your spouse, or your friend? I believe someone initially invited you to church. The next question is: have you ever invited someone to come to church?
\nWhoever invited you to church or whomever you invited to church? Both situations, I strongly believe, are ultimately God\u2019s invitation. As with all opportunities to worship, God invites everyone.
\nBetween you and whomever you invited to church, there might be a desire for you to have a more in-depth, meaningful relationship with that person, but ultimately the purpose of the invitation is for someone to have an in-depth loving relationship between that person and God. If a person has an in-depth, loving relationship with God; all other relationships are deepened and strengthened as well.
\nBased on the words of Isaiah, which was read a short time ago, I would like to share with you how God invites people to come to church through the prophet.
\nIn this world, some people think the most important thing is money and if you do not have it, that it is the end of the story. There are people who have no money and feel the end\u2026. However God still invites these people and tells them that there is a much more important matter for you to consider, saying \u201cCome to me.\u201d This is a priceless invitation and it not only for the wealthy.
\nThere are people who have money to spend for food, house to live, and some money to invest. But they do not spend for nutritious food or invest in a right portfolio. God invites those people, too, and teaches them there is a much more important matter to consider, saying \u201cCome to me and listen, so that you may live.\u201d
\nWhether or not you have money, whether or not you have nice things, God loves all people, and each one is His creation. He invites each one of us to come worship and receive His steadfast love. Isaiah was one of God\u2019s prophets to whom God told of this priceless invitation and this invitation was kept in the Bible.
\nAnd today, we heard the story of the barren fig tree, a parable that Jesus told His disciples. Why are we told this story? What is the relationship between this story and God\u2019s invitation?
\nWhat does a fig tree that hasn\u2019t borne fruit, for three years, symbolize? Who is the owner of the tree? Who is the gardener? Who is the tree?
\nI believe this parable is about God\u2019s open invitation for His love and a reminder of the necessity of repentance. The owner is God, the gardener is Jesus Christ, and the tree is His church. Especially in this context, the tree is all mainline churches in the United States.
\nUpon further reflection, we should not only mention mainline churches, we should also include all protestant churches and Catholic and Orthodox churches in the United States. Even though some segments of protestant churches are growing and some segments of Catholicism and Orthodoxy are expanding as well, many trees are not bearing enough healthy fruit to sustain themselves.
\nOur human frailty has led to barren years but in His Mercy there is hope. Jesus Christ says to His father, \u201cplease wait one more year, I will put more nutrition around it.\u201d Who are we, the people, in this sanctuary? We are part of His church; we are part of the fig tree.
\nDo you know what Jesus does for us (the fig tree)? Let\u2019s take a moment in this Lenten season to think about what He does because of His infinite compassion for us.
\nHe loves the fig tree so much and is passionate about each one of us. Not only caring about the people currently part of the tree, but He also loves the people who will become part of the tree in the future.
\nTherefore, He, himself becomes our nutrition and redeems the tree. He lives within the tree constantly nurturing it and allowing the tree to flourish. As a matter of fact, I can joyously say, we receive spiritual nutrition through Jesus Christ, His body and blood \u2013 His steadfast love.
\nHowever, before we consume His precious body and blood, as an ordained pastor of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, I would like to go back to Isaiah\u2019s words.
\nIsaiah was the prophet who conveyed God\u2019s Word, His priceless invitation \u201cCome to Me.\u201d
\nBut who is the prophet now? Who conveys the priceless invitation of Jesus Christ, \u201cCome to Me, so that you may live\u201d?
\nMy prayer is that each one of you will be transformed by Jesus\u2019 spiritual nutrition and become an Isaiah conveying God\u2019s priceless invitation to people around you, so that the fig tree will bear healthy, abundant fruit and thus won\u2019t be cut down.<\/p>\n

I would like to ask you two questions. Who invited you to come to church? Was it your parents, your spouse, or your friend? I believe someone initially invited you to church. The next question is: have you ever invited someone to come to church? Whoever invited you to church or whomever you invited to church? Both situations, I strongly believe, are ultimately God\u2019s invitation. As with all opportunities to worship, God invites everyone. Between you and whomever you invited to church, there might be a desire for you to have a more in-depth, meaningful relationship with that person, but ultimately the purpose of the invitation is for someone to have an in-depth loving relationship between that person and God. If a person has an in-depth, loving relationship with God; all other relationships are deepened and strengthened as well. Based on the words of Isaiah, which was read a short time ago, I would like to share with you how God invites people to come to church through the prophet. In this world, some people think the most important thing is money and if you do not have it, that it is the end of the story. There are people who have no money and feel the end\u2026.
