Grace and Peace to you in the name of our Lord and Savior.
\nPlease reflect upon your actions this past week. Did you make a mistake or fail to do something that you know you should have done? Think about not only this past week, but please reflect upon your entire life. Even though at first glance you may feel you\u2019ve not done anything really wrong; if you gave it serious thought, could you say with confidence that you\u2019re blameless in the eyes of God?
\nDo you know a man named Jack Welch? He was CEO of General Electric between 1981 and 2001. He drastically changed GE\u2019s corporate culture and acted contrary to the prevailing business wisdom. He eliminated bureaucracy, fired ineffective middle managers, and significantly increased GE\u2019s profitability. Other Fortune 500 companies would later follow his \u201ccrazy\u201d ideas. In 1999, Fortune Magazine named him \u201cManager of the 20th Century.\u201d Even though Mr. Welch was an excellent manager and business leader; he admitted that 30-40% of his decisions were wrong.
\nMr. Welch was also the man who reduced payroll, sold off GE\u2019s under-performing units and was often criticized for his brutal honesty. According to Japanese Wikipedia, he highly praised Mr. Eiji Mikawa, former president of Yokogawa Electric, because Mr. Mikawa championed corporate efficiency, spoke plainly, and implemented cost-saving procedures that were considered radical at the time. Much like Mr. Welch\u2019s and Mr. Mikawa\u2019s drastic ideas that changed business, Christ\u2019s radical ideas about forgiveness and sinners\u2019 redemption challenged the religious establishment.
\nI believe Jack Welch accepted the fact he made mistakes but more importantly he learned from his mistakes. Much like the Prodigal Son who returns, repents, and is forgiven by his father \u2013 when we humanity repent and accept Christ, we too are forgiven.
\nThe Gospel story given today is the parable of Prodigal Son. The younger son got his share of his father\u2019s estate and packed up all his belongings and took a trip to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money on wild living.
\nDestitute, the younger son persuaded a local farmer to hire him to feed the farmer\u2019s pigs. The boy eventually became so hungry that even the pigs\u2019 food (i.e. seed pods) looked appetizing to him. People were unmoved by his plight.
\nHe decided to go back home to his father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired man.”
\nSo he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long distance away, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
\nAs the younger son intended, he said, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.\u201d
\nHis father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger, and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening in the pen. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began.
\nMeanwhile, the older son was working in the fields. When he returned home, he heard music and dancing in the house\u2026 he was angry and said to his father, \u201cAll these years I’ve worked hard for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to do. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends.\u201d
\nHis father said to him, \u201cLook, dear son\u2026we had to celebrate this happy day. For your brother was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found!\u201d
\nWhat a parable this is! Who symbolizes who in the story? Let\u2019s take a moment to reflect upon this 40-day Lenten journey. God is the father of two sons. Which do you represent? Are you the younger son or are you the elder son? Who is Jesus Christ in the story? What does the party represent?
\nI believe that this parable is still applicable in the 21st century. People don\u2019t have to do obvious wrong in order to fall short in the eyes of God. We ignore God\u2019s wishes when we think we know what\u2019s best for us and that we generally don\u2019t make mistakes. We are like the elder son because we think we deserve good things to happen to us. However, we should enter the Sanctuary, like the younger son, repentant and acknowledging our mistakes. If you enter the Sanctuary with a repentant heart, God\u2019s warmly welcomes you like the father welcomes the Prodigal Son.
\nIn response to God\u2019s welcoming embrace, we sing hymns. Through giving glory to God, we confess our sins as the younger son did. God forgives right away, declaring his compassion for us. God clothes us with the finery of His Word much like the robes, rings and shoes the father gives his younger son.
\nA tremendous thing happens during Holy Communion \u2013 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. By Christ\u2019s body and blood, we are born anew. During the feast of Holy Communion, we sinners (i.e. mistake-makers, wrongdoers) are reconciled with our Father through the Lamb of God. Do you see how beautifully illustrative the parable is?
\nTo praise this bountiful feast, we sing hymns before and after Holy Communion. Holy Communion is a wonderful example of God\u2019s steadfast love. The body and blood of Jesus Christ strengthen us and give us eternal life. Each time we partake in Holy Communion, we reconcile with our heavenly Father. He encourages us to serve with humility and to share His love with the world. It is simply a wasted opportunity, for forgiveness and reconciliation, if you miss Sunday worship. <\/p>\n
