We sometimes put beautiful flowers on the altar. There are some people who in addition to giving a gracious monetary offering, wish to give flowers as well. Why do these people want to place flowers on the altar? What do the flowers symbolize?
\nWhether it\u2019s monetary or floral; they seem compelled to give. Whether or not they recognize the meaning of their offering, I believe the offering of financial gifts and flowers are both a joyful response to God\u2019s bountiful mercy and grace.
\nAs you well know, the place where we receive the sacrament is called the altar. In the center of the altar, there is a communion table. But did you know that some architects design this table in the shape of Jesus\u2019 coffin?
\nSo when viewed in this context, we can begin to understand why people would want to place expensive flowers on the altar. During funerals, especially in Japanese culture, it is very common to decorate the coffin with very beautiful flowers. Normally because of someone\u2019s death, we offer flowers to pay our respects and express grief. However, Jesus\u2019 case is quite different because he is raised from the dead \u2013 a joyful occurrence.
\nLet\u2019s look at the text today. People gathered to eat dinner. There was Jesus, Lazarus, Martha, Mary and several more people. Remember Lazarus? He was dead and in the grave for almost four days when Jesus raised him from the dead. So, when Jesus came to where his disciples were, they were very thankful. Martha prepared a wonderful meal for Jesus, to celebrate what he had done.
\nAnd Mary put very expensive perfume on Jesus\u2019 feet. The value of the perfume (i.e. nard) was almost $30,000 per ounce, about a year\u2019s wages in biblical times. Mary expressed thankfulness to Jesus Christ, the Savior, by perfuming his feet and wiping his feet with her hair\u2026an act of humility.
\n Because the oil was so expensive, I feel the perfume belonged to Lazarus\u2019 family. Of course Mary understood that the perfume ultimately belonged to God, so on behalf of the family, Mary perfumed Jesus\u2019 feet and other family members were fine with this since the Lazarus\u2019 life was restored. Only Judas Iscariot objected to perfuming Jesus\u2019 feet.
\nWhat does this story mean in relation to the sanctuary? Are Lazarus, Martha, and Mary present in the sanctuary? Yes\u2026as are all people who give thanks to God for His son Jesus Christ.
\nThe meaning of Lazarus in Greek is \u201cGod helped.\u201d I believe each one of us here is a Lazarus. Please think about your lives so far, how much has God helped each one of you? To those of you who\u2019ve been baptized…please recall how God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit has transformed you, been gracious to you, cleansed your shame, forgiven your sins, and refreshed your lives.
\nWhether or not you\u2019ve noticed or truly believed it, your lives were greatly different before you were baptized in the name of the Father-God, the Son-Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. We receive so much from Christ and many of us respond joyfully to what we receive each month, each week and each moment of our lives. Everything comes from God. Most of us joyfully give back a portion to God because He has blessed us more than we could ever repay.
\nWhy do we give offerings before communion? Like when Mary offered the valuable perfume several days before his crucifixion, someone in this sanctuary gathers valuable offerings from the congregation and puts them on the body of Jesus before communion; this represents the last supper. Also like Martha\u2019s feast, someone in this sanctuary prepares sacraments before communion.
\nAs you know, Jesus does not end his life in death. After the last supper, he was raised from the tomb; he overcomes death through the Crucifixion. His Passion leads to eternal life and, for this, we should be ever-grateful. Our lives are also renewed and refreshed by Jesus\u2019 resurrection. Every time we receive Jesus\u2019 body and blood it is my hope that we are sent from the sanctuary and into the world with a joyful and thankful heart.
\nThe whole process of repenting our past, praising the Lord, listening to God\u2019s Word, offering our gifts, and receiving sacraments during Sunday services are integral parts of our faith. In the midst of these practices, the Holy Spirit brings us hope and love and empowers us to serve the community and to give back joyfully \u2013 to \u201cperfume Jesus with our thanks\u201d.

Whether or not they recognize the meaning of their offering, I believe the offering of financial gifts and flowers are both a joyful response to God\u2019s bountiful mercy and grace. As you well know, the place where we receive the sacrament is called the altar. In the center of the altar, there is a communion table. But did you know that some architects design this table in the shape of Jesus\u2019 coffin? So when viewed in this context, we can begin to understand why people would want to place expensive flowers on the altar. During funerals, especially in Japanese culture, it is very common to decorate the coffin with very beautiful flowers. Normally because of someone\u2019s death, we offer flowers to pay our respects and express grief.
