\nMay the Grace and Peace of our Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit be revealed to you and all members of Pacifica Synod! <\/p>\n

Have you ever heard someone say, \u201cDue to the work of the Holy Spirit, this thing happened.\u201d Not only have you heard it but you, also, might have said it.
\nHowever, how do you know that was the Holy Spirit? For example, if you win the lottery, would you say it\u2019s the work of the Holy Spirit? If there is an accident and nobody\u2019s injured, would you say it\u2019s the work of the Holy Spirit and if someone died, would not mention the Holy Spirit? I think whether people refer to the Holy Spirit is on a case by case basis.
\nThis coming Sunday, we celebrate the Holy Trinity. However, today I will try not to use the words Holy Trinity for the rest of my message, because many years ago, a pastor who was an experienced parish pastor, for more than 40 years, said that even after all the time he spent preaching, it was difficult to know the meaning of the Holy Trinity.
\nSo I hope that we can answer the question, \u201cHow Do You Know When It\u2019s the Holy Spirit?\u201d by reading through the Gospel given today: The Gospel of John.
\nThe chapters 14 through 16 of John\u2019s Gospel, this is a discourse Jesus taught his apostles on the night before he was crucified. In these three chapters, he talked about the promise of the Holy Spirit four times.
\nThe Gospel given today, is one of the four. However, in three of the four, Jesus did not use the words, the Holy Spirit, but, instead uses the Spirit of Truth. According to the NRSV, that I read a few minutes ago, Jesus said, \u201cWhen the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.\u201d
\nI would like to talk about the word \u201ctruth\u201d a bit more deeply. In Chinese characters, \u201ctruth\u201d is expressed by two Chinese characters, one is \u201creal\u201d and the other is \u201creasoning.\u201d In Greek, the truth is \u201calletheia,\u201d the original meaning of this word is \u201cnot hidden, revealing, real.\u201d In Hebrew, the truth is \u201camt,\u201d the original meaning is the same as \u201camen\u201d or \u201csurely, something you can trust completely.\u201d
\nTherefore, we can understand from these meanings, that the Spirit of Truth is something real and revealing and that you can surely trust.
\nAlso Jesus used the word truth in that sentence again, the Spirit of Truth will guide you all to the truth…. the second word truth includes \u201cthe\u201d in front of it…. Jesus also said in John 14, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. Jesus himself is the truth.
\nSo Jesus promises that the revealing spirit that you can trust 100% will guide you to, himself, Jesus Christ. In other words, the work of the Holy Spirit will make you closer to Jesus Christ and connect you to him…
\nSo if you want to know when it\u2019s the Holy Spirit at work, we might ask a better question, whether what happened guided us closer or better connected us to Jesus Christ?
\nAt the beginning of my message, I asked if you win the lottery, will you say that it was the work of the Holy Spirit? I think the more important question is, if you win the lottery, will that fact guide you closer to connect to Jesus Christ?
\nAnother example I mentioned was a traffic accident. I believe, even if someone died from an accident, there are cases we may say that it was the work of the Holy Spirit.
\nThe following is a true story that happened in 1947 (in Nagasaki prefecture) in Japan. A small bus full of passengers, almost 30 people, was climbing up on a steep road. However, when it almost reached the top of the hill, the engine stopped, and unfortunately the brakes failed at the same time. Therefore, the bus was slowly going backward.
\nThe driver (Mr. Onizuka) jumped out of the bus and put a rock under the bus to stop it. However, the bus went over the rock\u2026in 10 feet or so, there was a 30-foot cliff and the bus almost drove over that precipice.
\nMr. Onizuka decided to lay himself under the tires to stop the bus from falling. His compassionate, selfless action did stop the bus and he saved all 30 passengers. Mr. Onizuka was later carried to a hospital, but he was dead at 21 years old.
\nI believe that the Holy Spirit worked through Mr. Onizuka. Even though Mr. Onizuka\u2019s earthly life ended, his death prevented many more deaths.
\nThe Holy Spirit guides you closer to Christ. The real and trustworthy Spirit is always working on you to connect you to the Truth, Jesus Christ. So, that you may always have hope and joy in Jesus and realize that whatever happens in your life, you should praise him. Amen.<\/p>\n
