\u201cBeing a Good Samaritan without Realizing It\u201d

May the Lord make the words that I speak acceptable to you and shower us with tremendous grace here in this sanctuary, we pray, in the name of our risen Lord our savior, Jesus Christ!
\nToday\u2019s text is the parable of the Good Samaritan. There was a Jew who was traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho, he was beaten, robbed of all his possessions and he was left half dead on a road. There were three people who encountered the Jew one by one. The first two, a Jewish priest and a Levite avoided the half dead man. The third person, a Samaritan, tended the man\u2019s wounds, took him to an inn, looked after him, paid for the man\u2019s continued care, and said he would return to check on the injured man.
\nLast week, I talked about two metaphors of the Bible. One of them was a mirror, which means that you see yourself in a situation that was described in the Bible. I would like to ask each one of you to think about the following question: if you see this text as a mirror, where do you see yourself in the scene of this story?
\nAre you one of the three, the priest, the Levite, or the Samaritan? Or are you someone else? When I was a seminary student, one of projects we did was a play of this scene. A group composed by six people performed the play.
\nSix people took roles of the following characters: a priest, a Levite, a Samaritan, a Jewish traveler; a robber, and an innkeeper.
\nWhen the six got together to plan the pray, one person asked me first, \u201cHitoshi, which character would you like to play?\u201d I was already thinking about who I should perform in terms of a process of elimination. I did not want to be the priest or the Levite. I felt that I was not suitable for the Samaritan, the robber, or the innkeeper either. So, I chose to be the half dead Jewish traveler.
\nWhile we were proceeding with the play, I cried out and sensed by myself that I was half dead. I did not fight against the robber at all. I watched the priest and the Levite pass me without stopping to help. While I was watching them, I just said, \u201cThey have their own reasons why they did not come to me, so I just forgive them.\u201d
\nThen, I was helped by the Samaritan and taken to the inn. He gave a generous amount of money to the innkeeper and the Samaritan said to me that he would return.
\nWhen I listen to this story, I believe that many of us ask if we are one of the three? Even though we may see ourselves as the priest or the Levite, God is not accusing us of doing nothing.
\nI believe that, like the beaten and robbed I portrayed, we are very similar to that character in our real world. Even though not many of us suffered that way physically, the reality of our life is that we often hurt one another and often are emotionally half dead. Even though we make terrible mistakes within the context of human relationships, we receive God\u2019s tremendous grace and forgiveness. Actually the real forgiveness happens every week during worship, and God gives whatever is needed in our lives. Whether or you realize it, God renews and empowers our spirit to go forward each week.
\nIn the story, I feel God\u2019s presence in the figure of the Samaritan. Even though Jews typically hated Samaritans, the Samaritan, i.e. God forgives the Jews and cares for the wounded traveler. Likewise, even though we do not love our neighbors as we love ourselves, when we realize faith in Christ, God forgives us and restores us by his grace.
\nAfter telling this parable, Jesus told the lawyer to do like the Samaritan did. That was because Jesus was doing what the Samaritan had done. Therefore he ordered the lawyer to do likewise.
\nEven though we do not live up to God\u2019s hopes for us, because of faith in Christ, we are restored by the body of Jesus Christ. And thusly restored we may become a part of the body of Christ, the church, and we may become like the Good Samaritan. \nYou might not have realized that you too are a Good Samaritan and one of example, of this, is the World Hunger appeal every first Sunday of the month. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is combating hunger and poverty. Each one of you is a part of that activity. Last week, I talked about two metaphors of the Bible. One of them was a mirror, which means that you see yourself in a situation that was described in the Bible. I would like to ask each one of you to think about the following question: if you see this text as a mirror, where do you see yourself in the scene of this story? Are you one of the three, the priest, the Levite, or the Samaritan? Or are you someone else?
