and Peace to you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ!<br \/>\nMy house is directly facing Red Hill Avenue. Although we are closer to the north end in Tustin and the traffic is not very busy, sometimes the traffic is noisy.<br \/>\nThere is a sidewalk between our house and the street and then there is a narrow green belt. On that belt, we only have a lawn.<br \/>\nOur south side neighbor, also facing to Red Hill, has trees on that green belt. The trees are 10 to 15 feet high and I am sure that the trees mitigate the noise from the street to the house.  Therefore, we often envy our neighbor.<br \/>\nThere is a saying \u201cThe grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.\u201d If you literally interpret this sentence it is, \u201cOur neighbor\u2019s grass is better than ours.\u201d But that is not the correct understanding of the saying.<br \/>\nThe text today may be understood many ways&#8230;if you read this text only once and literally, you might have an impression that Martha works very hard but is distracted by unnecessary details and Mary listens to Jesus and realizes what is truly important.  However, Luke\u2019s point was to compare Martha and Mary.<br \/>\nI believe Jesus enjoyed the food that Martha prepared and of course he gave thanks before he ate as he did for the last supper. I am sure that Jesus was thankful to Martha as well as to God.<br \/>\nHowever, in the Bible, Luke wrote only five verses regarding Martha and Mary. Did Jesus really want to say Mary was better than Martha?<br \/>\nWhen you read this story only comparatively and conclude Mary is better than Martha, I think that is similar to interpreting that \u201cOur neighbor\u2019s grass is better than ours.\u201d<br \/>\nBased on what is written in the Bible, I think Martha was a very capable lady who prepared food and beverages very promptly for many guests. However, Martha could not endure the perceived laziness of her sister, Mary. She was comparing herself with Mary, and was mad that Mary was just sitting and listening to Jesus instead of helping Martha prepare and serve food.<br \/>\nWhy does not Mary work with me? Mary could listen to Jesus while she is working like I am doing.  However, Mary was sitting close to Jesus and she was among his disciples. Probably because she was the only woman sitting with the disciples, she might have been admired by the young men.  So Martha might have had a kind of inferiority complex (regarding the attention Mary was receiving), even though it seems Martha had a superiority complex (regarding her own work ethic) as well.<br \/>\nThen Martha decided to ask Jesus to tell Mary not to let me work alone but to help me. In response to her, Jesus said \u201cMartha, Martha\u201d called her name twice with his love and care, but the words followed was \u201cyou are worried and distracted by many things.\u201d<br \/>\nThe words were not Martha wanted to hear. However, what Jesus said was exactly pointing out Martha\u2019s situation. Since Martha was very capable person, she could see what she should do and also she could compare what she was doing and what Mary was doing.  Might the words that Jesus said to Martha have freed Martha from her unnecessary worries? Like Martha, we should realize we cannot live on bread alone and that God\u2019s words give life also.\u3000<br \/>\nWe are hearing the words that Jesus said to Martha 2000 years ago and they are still relevant today, \u201cYou are worried and distracted by many things, but only one thing is needed\u2026\u201d.  We often compare ourselves with our neighbors and allow our own inferiority\/superiority complexes to distract us from faithfully living in this world. The words Jesus said are graceful and merciful words that free us from our unnecessary concerns and complaints.<br \/>\nJust a few weeks ago I had a short conversation with our south side neighbor.  He said to me, \u201cI envy your green belt that just has a nice green lawn.
