The Holy Spirit, Better By Far\u3002\u3000Luke 11:1-13
\nGrace and Peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior!
\nDo you pray regularly? Earlier this year, I preached the first five messages according to five practices of Christian life. 1) Reading the Bible, is reading a love letter from God. 2) Pray regularly, it is the best way to communicate with God, as Jesus himself prayed regularly. 3) Come to worship every week, it is a kind of waste if you miss services. 4) Bring your friends to church and help them connect to God, it is serving. 5) Contribute your time, talent, and treasure as a response to God\u2019s grace and gifts to you.
\nSix months have passed; I would like to focus on prayer again. I believe each one of you pray for many different things. Of course it is good to pray for the people listed in the prayer chain in our weekly bulletin.
\nNot only praying for others, but I also believe that each one of you has specific prayers for yourself\u2026. I think it is natural. I understand that there are people who feel that \u201cI am not a good prayer person.\u201d That is OK\u2026.
\nEven if you feel that you are not good at praying by speaking words aloud, you probably pray in your mind, seriously asking God for such and such things to happen. However you might have experienced the fact that the things you earnestly prayed for did not happen. How may we, as Christians, perceive these matters when what we ask in our prayers does not happen?
\nIn the Bible, there are many verses about prayer. However, the Lord\u2019s Prayer that Jesus taught was only written in two places, one is in Luke 11 which is today\u2019s text and the other one is Matthew 6.
\nIn both prayers in Matthew and Luke, the first two or three petitions are not really focused on individual wants but are things God longs for because in the Lord\u2019s Prayer we pray first \u201cHallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done as it is in heaven.\u201d
\nJesus is very clear from the beginning that we should pray for God\u2019s will rather than our own wishes or our own will. But of course, it is OK to pray for your own wishes since Jesus is teaching us to pray \u201cgive us today our daily bread, forgive our sins as we forgive others, lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil.\u201d
\nThe text today did not end with only the Lord\u2019s Prayer. In the latter part of the text, it says, \u201cIf you ask, it will be given, if you search, you will find, and if you knock, it will be opened.\u201d
\nThese verses are very encouraging for us to pray and ask God for things we want. People might think that when you make a wish list to Santa Claus, Santa Claus will bring all items on the wish list, and so too, if you ask God in your prayers, for something, everything you ask for will happen or be granted to you.
\nIs Jesus like an ideal Santa Claus? Did Jesus want to convey that everything you ask for will be given to you exactly as you wish? Let me summarize the last two verses of the text and let us think together.
\nIf your children ask for a fish, you do not give them a snake instead. If they ask for a hardboiled egg, you do not give them a scorpion instead. Likewise, our Heavenly Father will not give you something you don\u2019t need. In fact He\u2019ll give you much more\u2026the Holy Spirit; you only have to ask.
\nIn other words, what the Heavenly Father gives us may not be the same as what we wished for, however, it may be far better\u2026. Heavenly Father, God, gives us the Holy Spirit, which is Better By Far.
\nI am sure that there are people who seriously pray and are connecting to God, but the response from God might not be the same as they wished for. And the question today was how we may understand that what we pray for isn\u2019t always answered in ways we expect.
\nI believe among the people who experienced that your wish was not answered by God in an expected way, there are people who realize that you are still positively changed from that experience,
\nIn a way, because of the experience, you recognized that you became closer to God. I think that is a blessing. And I hope and pray that you also recognized that the Holy Spirit was given to you as well. Because of your prayers, Jesus promises that he would send us the Holy Spirit, and that is much better by far.
\nTo conclude today\u2019s message, I would like to introduce how Jesus prayed at Gethsemane. In Matthew 26:39, Jesus\u2019 prayer was as follows: \u201cMy Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.\u201d
\nThe first petition Jesus still asked if the death on the cross may be prevented, but then he changed his way of praying rather than praying for his wishes, he prayed that his Father\u2019s will be done. He said, \u201cyet not what I want but what you want.\u201d
\nAs you know Jesus was dead but he was resurrected. And the Holy Spirit came upon us, coming to everybody. The whole sequence was much better than just His death on the cross being prevented.
\nWhy do we not pray more for God\u2019s will to be done so that the Holy Spirit will shower us with His gifts and may our lives be changed even more. These changes are not our will but rather God\u2019s will, as it should be. Amen.

Earlier this year, I preached the first five messages according to five practices of Christian life. 1) Reading the Bible, is reading a love letter from God. 2) Pray regularly, it is the best way to communicate with God, as Jesus himself prayed regularly. 3) Come to worship every week, it is a kind of waste if you miss services. 4) Bring your friends to church and help them connect to God, it is serving. 5) Contribute your time, talent, and treasure as a response to God\u2019s grace and gifts to you. Six months have passed; I would like to focus on prayer again. I believe each one of you pray for many different things. Of course it is good to pray for the people listed in the prayer chain in our weekly bulletin. Not only praying for others, but I also believe that each one of you has specific prayers for yourself\u2026. I think it is natural. I understand that there are people who feel that \u201cI am not a good prayer person.\u201d That is OK\u2026.
