May the Grace and Peace of Christ be with you all! <\/p>\n

The theme of today\u2019s message is the party that Jesus discussed. When you are invited to a party, where are you going to sit? When you host a party, whom are you going to invite?
\nI had a bit of a bitter and shameful experience at a party\u2026however, from that awkward experience; I felt that God was speaking to me. Five or six years ago, a theology professor\u2019s retirement party was held in Monterrey Park and I happened to be there. During this time I was just an intern.
\nIt was held at a Chinese restaurant, in their banquet hall, I entered the venue and sat at a table near the entrance. Then the professor came a few minutes later and sat next to the table where I was seated. Then several other VIPs arrived and started sitting at either his table or my table. Although, I thought that the table I was sitting at would be far from the main guest table, this was not the case.
\nLater on, a few more people arrived (i.e. guest speakers) and I was asked to change my seat by a pastor who coordinated the party\u2026it was a shameful social experience as Jesus discussed in his parable. I moved to a different table and the person seated next to me was a pastor who came from Chicago. He is a physically disabled individual. It was interesting how I came to be seated next to him. I remember the scene that was described in today\u2019s text. I felt very happy that I sat next to a disabled pastor and I had a wonderful conversation with him.
\nIn the Gospel text today, Jesus talked about a parable that you should sit at the lowest place when you are invited to a wedding party. Also when you have a luncheon or dinner party, you should invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. Since you are not directly repaid by them, you are repaid and blessed when the righteous are resurrected.
\nWhat does this parable mean? What does Jesus teach his disciples at the time and us in modern times? In the chapters of Luke (that we\u2019ve been reading for months), there is a consistent theme, which is the Kingdom of God. Jesus has been teaching what the Kingdom of God looks like, metaphorically talking about joyful parties. You are invited to the party and you\u2019re expected to invite others by sharing the Good News. He is teaching us how we should live in this world.
\nBased on what Jesus said, in the Kingdom of God, all people are consistently humble and there is no difference between rich or poor, disabled or able-bodied, white people or people of different ethnicities. All people are the same under God.
\nIn the Kingdom of God, no one is considered uninvited to or unwanted at the party. Rather those poor and disabled people are considered righteous in the Kingdom of God. And Jesus is teaching that the Kingdom of God can be realized even in this world, so that we can have a joyful party where God sits together with us.
\nA recent sociological study suggests that most people tend to have friends who\u2019re ethnically similar to themselves and, by extension, associate with people of similar ethnic and economic backgrounds. Whether they\u2019re rich or middle-class, people tend to overlook the socially marginalized such as the poor or disabled. Some people invite the marginalized to events or parties so they can be praised as good hosts but Jesus wants us, as Christians, to realize that despite possible better social standing, no person is more worthy than another and we should try to live our lives with humility.
\nJust this past week, I learned that there is a growing atmosphere in Japan that is trying to discourage foreigners from living in Japan. Do you think this kind of atmosphere contributes to a truly healthy, joyful country? I\u2019m rather concerned about Japan\u2019s relationships with foreign countries. My question is what would Jesus say about this kind of xenophobic atmosphere?
\nNot only in the Kingdom of God, but also in this world, Jesus wants us all to be humble, respect others (not just our peers but the poor and disabled as well) and live together, remembering that we\u2019re all created by God. By living with humility and treating others equally, regardless of their social standing, we can rightfully claim a seat at the joyful party where Jesus is our most gracious host. Amen.

The theme of today\u2019s message is the party that Jesus discussed. When you are invited to a party, where are you going to sit? When you host a party, whom are you going to invite? I had a bit of a bitter and shameful experience at a party\u2026however, from that awkward experience; I felt that God was speaking to me. Five or six years ago, a theology professor\u2019s retirement party was held in Monterrey Park and I happened to be there. During this time I was just an intern. It was held at a Chinese restaurant, in their banquet hall, I entered the venue and sat at a table near the entrance. Then the professor came a few minutes later and sat next to the table where I was seated. Then several other VIPs arrived and started sitting at either his table or my table. Although, I thought that the table I was sitting at would be far from the main guest table, this was not the case. Later on, a few more people arrived (i.e. guest speakers) and I was asked to change my seat by a pastor who coordinated the party\u2026it was a shameful social experience as Jesus discussed in his parable. I moved to a different table and the person seated next to me was a pastor who came from Chicago.
