\nThere are many Japanese people who say \u201cI am not a Christian.\u201d However, what do you mean \u201cChristian\u201d?
\nSometimes, we hear, \u201cSince I believe in science, that is why I do not believe the Bible and I\u2019m not a Christian.\u201d
\nPeople who think that way might have a perception that if you become Christian, you\u2019re supposed to believe that \u201ceverything is created by God and you automatically ignore or disbelieve scientific discoveries like quantum theory, astrophysics, and cellular research.
\nHowever, in the world there are many scientists who are Christians and they have made important discoveries and proven many scientific principles.
\nChristians have entrusted everything to God\u2026and for non-believers, it seems like Christians do nothing other than just believe in the Bible and disbelieve modern science. If this were the case, why have Christians made significant contributions to science?
\nIn a sense, I believe that the Gospel scripture today answers that question, although it may be difficult for many of us to reconcile. The scripture today is the conversation between Jesus and his apostles.
\nThe apostles asked Jesus to, \u201cIncrease our faith.\u201d A paragraph before today\u2019s text, Jesus guided them to forgive and forgive and forgive\u2026that is a difficult thing to do in most cases.
\n“Therefore, the apostles recognized that following Jesus was difficult since Jesus ordered them to forgive almost forever. Then the Apostles thought they might have to do the difficult thing by increasing their faith. However, they did not know how they might increase their faith on their own. That is why they asked Jesus to increase their faith.”
\nIn reply to their request, Jesus told about one of smallest things, which is a mustard seed. And then, he talked about the mulberry tree, which is an example of something large. He showed that something as large as a mulberry tree could be moved by the smallest amount of faith. Our faith in God allows us to accomplish great physical and intellectual things.
\nThe mustard seed represents the smallest thing, faith, and the moving of the mulberry tree represents the biggest thing, which is something beyond what human beings can do alone\u2026what does Jesus want to tell to his apostles?
\nTo become a person who has faith (or to be baptized) especially for adult baptism in the Lutheran Church, pastors teach the Ten Commandments, the Apostles\u2019 Creed, the Lord\u2019s Prayer, Confession of Sins, Holy Baptism, and Holy Communion. However, we do not test how people understand these matters. Or it is not mandatory for people to write compositions or essays about how baptism candidates think about these matters or Christianity in general. Faith is not only meant to be an intellectual exercise.
\nTo become Christians it is not necessary to consider God, Nature, the whole universe, or Biblical understandings separately, rather, we should live trusting everything in the Lord, Jesus Christ, which is \u201chow to live taking delight in the Lord.\u201d
\nIn this 21st century contemporary world, trusting God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, is to trust something that is non-physical. Trusting that something non-physical created heaven, earth and all plants and animals asks us, as Christians, to bet our lives on something that is on some level uncertain.
\nTo live in faith is to accept that we do not understand everything, we do not always think or behave correctly, and we often make mistakes, but despite our failings we realize we greatly improve our lives when we live according to Jesus\u2019 will.
\nTherefore, a Christian must be willing to serve God and exhibit humility and use his or her God-given talents (whether they are physical or intellectual) to help glorify God and increase our understanding about the world we live in.
\nIn the midst of Christians\u2019 humble lives, the father, God works, we allow Jesus Christ to come in, and He sanctifies our lives through Holy Baptism, Holy Communion, and with the Living Word.
\nAs a result, God lets Christians realize tremendous things. This includes forgiving others, not only forgiving wrongs or helping the less fortunate but also many other complicated matters as well. For example, Copernicus advocated the Heliocentric model of the universe when most scientists at that time still believed in the Geocentric model. He was in a very important position in the Roman Catholic Church during the early 16th Century. I believe God made him realize this important concept about our universe.
\nBecause of faith in Christ, through living humbly with Christ, God works through Christians and makes us realize or do tremendous things, like a small mustard seed of faith can move a large mulberry tree from the ground to the sea. Even though we can discover or do important things, we can just say, \u201cWe have done only what we ought to have done!\u201d like Jesus mentioned in today\u2019s text.
\nChristianity is not opposed to scientific inquiry and discovery, but Christians should acknowledge and be grateful that God gave us our intellectual capacities in the first place. Praise God for all He has given us and through our continued faith may we glorify him. Amen!<\/p>\n

There are many Japanese people who say \u201cI am not a Christian.\u201d However, what do you mean \u201cChristian\u201d? Sometimes, we hear, \u201cSince I believe in science, that is why I do not believe the Bible and I\u2019m not a Christian.\u201d People who think that way might have a perception that if you become Christian, you\u2019re supposed to believe that \u201ceverything is created by God and you automatically ignore or disbelieve scientific discoveries like quantum theory, astrophysics, and cellular research. However, in the world there are many scientists who are Christians and they have made important discoveries and proven many scientific principles. Christians have entrusted everything to God\u2026and for non-believers, it seems like Christians do nothing other than just believe in the Bible and disbelieve modern science. If this were the case, why have Christians made significant contributions to science? In a sense, I believe that the Gospel scripture today answers that question, although it may be difficult for many of us to reconcile. The scripture today is the conversation between Jesus and his apostles.
