Please look at this pole. It is covered by a purple cloth. Do you remember what is underneath it? What does it mean to you? In ancient times, purple represented (maybe it still does) expensive items and royalty. Therefore, purple was historically reserved for kings and queens. Also as Christians, we should remember that purple is a color of Lent. According to St. Mark and St. John, right before Jesus was crucified, he was dressed in purple cloth by soldiers. Therefore when we remember the time Jesus was walking to be crucified, purple is used liturgically. However, why do we put the purple cloth on the cross in this Resurrection Sanctuary? What do you think? It is OK for each of us to have different ideas about the symbology. You might interpret that Jesus is on the cross. I like that idea; it is a potent image. <\/p>\n

However, this year, especially when I think about the Gospel text given today, I feel like the cross might not be under the cloth. I am wondering if it might be a serpent under the cloth. Why would I say such a thing? I will tell you shortly\u2026 The Gospel text today is from John chapter 3:1-17. I would say that verse 16 is a very famous verse. I was told that, based on poll results, John 3:16 is the most popular biblical verse in the United States. \u201cFor God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.\u201d These words were spoken when Nicodemus did not understand what Jesus said, \u201cVery truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit,\u201d that is written in verse 5. Right before the famous verse 16, in the 14th and 15th verses, Jesus said \u201cjust as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.\u201d Why did Jesus say such a thing?<\/p>\n

According to the lectionary, tomorrow we will read Numbers Chapter 21. Twelve centuries before Christ, several hundred thousand Israelites were traveling from Egypt to Israel. Their trip took almost 40 years. During the long trip to Israel, people started complaining to the Lord and Moses saying, \u201cWhy have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.\u201d Then, God took action and responded to their complaints. The Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, \u201cWe have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us.\u201d So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, \u201cMake a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.\u201d So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the bronze serpent and live. Jesus then tried to explain what would happen to him and to His believers using the serpent story in Numbers Chapter 21 to reinforce his point. In this story, the Israelites did not understand how God was caring for them, they did not understand how God loved them, but complained against the Lord and Moses. Then they realized that they had sinned and when they looked upon the serpent on the pole, then they could live. Likewise, Jesus mentioned that when Nicodemus or others are baptized, acknowledges their sins, and looks upon Jesus on the pole (i.e. cross), they are forgiven and they would live His new life. <\/p>\n

In our daily lives, we commit sins in God\u2019s eyes and we often make excuses for our behavior. Even though we live in a much better situation compared to two thousand years ago, we still complain\u2026we often act selfishly, forgetting what God is trying to say or even ignoring God\u2019s will. God is patiently loving us and watching over us despite our flaws. In response to our selfish thoughts and our sins, God sends his son, Jesus Christ, to this world and He is still hung on the Cross to save us from our sins. God forgives us and removes our sins through Jesus\u2019 crucifixion. <\/p>\n

Please look up at the pole covered by the purple cloth. At the beginning of message, I said that it could be a serpent due to Numbers Chapter 21. But now what do you see? Do you see Jesus on the cross? Do you see your sins, shameful feelings, and mistakes? The crucified Jesus removes your sins. The point of the message is not, of course, that it is OK to repeatedly sin since we are forgiven. The most important matter is how we respond when we know that Jesus was crucified to save us from our sins. How do we act when we realize that God sent His precious son to remove our sins? Even as Christians, we can always do better. May you recognize God\u2019s mercy this morning, be spiritually renewed, and go forward living a new life in Jesus Christ! We are truly blessed to have the Lord in our lives. Amen.<\/p>\n

In ancient times, purple represented (maybe it still does) expensive items and royalty. Therefore, purple was historically reserved for kings and queens. Also as Christians, we should remember that purple is a color of Lent. According to St. Mark and St. John, right before Jesus was crucified, he was dressed in purple cloth by soldiers. Therefore when we remember the time Jesus was walking to be crucified, purple is used liturgically. However, why do we put the purple cloth on the cross in this Resurrection Sanctuary?
