“Living Water”

May Grace and Peace be upon you in the name of our savior, Jesus Christ! <\/p>\n

This past Wednesday night from 9:30 p.m. until 7 a.m. Thursday morning, Satoko and I stayed at King of Glory Lutheran Church and served as volunteers for the Family Promise. It is a program offering temporary accommodations for homeless families. We read instructions that were provided by our Family Promise program coordinator and Council president, Pete. However, we were still unsure about which bathroom of several bathrooms to use, which fellowship hall to use for meals (since there are two of them), and which mattresses volunteers should use while staying on the campus\u2026
\nTherefore, when we arrived at KOG after 9 p.m. we were unsure about what to do. Even though we were the hosts to the families, we learned from a 12 year old girl, S, one father, L, and the other father, R, which bathroom to use, which fellowship hall to go to for breakfast, and the proper mattresses that we should use. As a result, I think, we socialized well with the families, had a good night and everyone slept very well. Then the next morning, all of us departed with hope and the promise of a new day. \u3000<\/p>\n

The Gospel Text read today is John 4:5-42. It is a little bit long, but it is a wonderful portion of the Bible. Let me start with some background information about the story. Historically, there was strong tension and a huge cultural gap between Jews and Samaritans. It was quite uncommon for Jews and Samaritans to talk to each other.
\n Also, at that time, there was gender inequality between men and women. Furthermore, it was considered improper for unrelated men and women to speak with one another.
\nIn addition, there was an enormous cultural gap between the Samaritan woman and people in the village where she was living at that time. She was shunned and marginalized because she was living with a man after being divorced five times. Therefore, she didn\u2019t interact with the other villagers. She was ashamed of her position in life and her lowly status meant she wasn\u2019t welcomed in society. <\/p>\n

One day around noon, because it was very hot outside, she carried a bucket to draw some water from the well. The woman and Jesus had never met before but since Jesus is the Messiah, he knew everything about her life\u2019s difficulties. Jesus did not criticize her. Rather, he said \u201cGive me a drink.\u201d She was surprised because Jews and Samaritans didn\u2019t normally associate with one another and he had no container with him.
\nAccording to Canadian Catholic philosopher and theologian, Jean Vanier, to truly love someone is not really to offer or to do something for that person. By taking care of him or her, it might give them the impression that \u201cyou cannot do something yourself and you are not capable of doing something.\u201d Rather, to love is to let someone recognize his or her own beautiful quality that the person has. To let someone know his or her intrinsic value is to truly love them.
\nThe Samaritan woman was very surprised because Jesus talked to her despite clear societal boundaries between Jews and Samaritans and between men and women, in general. Jesus ignored those societal boundaries because His message and gift of living water were too important not to share. Jesus not only crossed societal boundaries, he helped the Samaritan woman recognize that there is something important she can do for him; she has value as a person. Then the conversation between the woman and Jesus continued as we read. Interestingly enough, the woman said \u201cSir, give me the living water so that I will never again be thirsty.\u201d She was thinking of her physical thirst and the physical strain of getting water from a deep well on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

Although there was a misunderstanding on her part, I would say Jesus already gave her the living water. In the end, she realized Jesus was the Messiah. Even though she came there with the bucket to draw water, she left the bucket and went back to village empty handed. She started proclaiming the Gospel, saying, \u201cCome and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! Can he be the Messiah?\u201d
\nThen people in the village believed Jesus was the Messiah. This story is not just a 2000 year old story we listen to and then say, \u201cIt\u2019s a good and interesting story.\u201d I think this is the story that teaches us what the living water (i.e. the Spirit) truly is and triggers us to allow the living water to flow into us.
\nThe first sentence that Jesus said, to her, \u201cGive me a drink,\u201d contains Jesus\u2019 love for her and her value that she has in Jesus\u2019 eyes. After that seemingly simple sentence, their conversation flowed. As a result, the Samaritan woman became a living missionary. It was as if a fish was left on the ground to die and then was put back into ample, clean water and started swimming vigorously. <\/p>\n

In the beginning, I talked about what happened when Satoko and I volunteered for Family Promise. We learned some necessary information from the guest families even though we were the hosts. In that conversation, there was living water that God provided and I hope and pray that the families that stayed at KOG this past week will see a great and hopeful future with the guidance of the living water.
\nI also pray that the same living water from Jesus Christ flows into each one of you gathered in this sanctuary and among the people who will gather here in the future. May this renewing experience allow us to be joyful proclaimers of Jesus Christ and servants to the communities around LCR. Amen.<\/p>\n

It is a program offering temporary accommodations for homeless families. We read instructions that were provided by our Family Promise program coordinator and Council president, Pete. However, we were still unsure about which bathroom of several bathrooms to use, which fellowship hall to use for meals (since there are two of them), and which mattresses volunteers should use while staying on the campus\u2026 Therefore, when we arrived at KOG after 9 p.m. we were unsure about what to do. Even though we were the hosts to the families, we learned from a 12 year old girl, S, one father, L, and the other father, R, which bathroom to use, which fellowship hall to go to for breakfast, and the proper mattresses that we should use. As a result, I think, we socialized well with the families, had a good night and everyone slept very well.
