May the Grace and Peace of Jesus Christ be upon you in this sanctuary!<\/p>\n

Whenever people have difficulties in their lives, some people think that the difficulties are God\u2019s punishment for the supposed wrongs that these people have done.\u3000There are Buddhists or Hindus that believe in the cycle of death and rebirth, and if bad things happen; it is because they think they did something wrong in their former lives. Everything depends on your mindset, but I wonder if people truly believe they can be forgiven and truly freed from the cycle of wrong doing? I am not sure if just being patient during hardships will help. <\/p>\n

The Gospel text today, is the story of the blind man, and how Jesus changed his life. Because the man was born blind, the disciples thought the man\u2019s own sins or his parents\u2019 sins caused his blindness. However, Jesus refuted the relationship between sins and the man\u2019s blindness, Jesus said, \u201cNeither this man nor his parents have sinned\u201d and \u201cGod\u2019s works might be revealed in him.\u201d\u3000Jesus did not try to explain the cause of the man\u2019s blindness, but he let his disciples see what happened when He interacted with the blind man. \u3000Then, Jesus spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man\u2019s eyes, saying to him, \u201cGo, wash in the pool of Siloam\u201d (which means Sent).
\nThen the man went and washed the mud off and came back able to see. His life was completely changed due to what Jesus did. <\/p>\n

Although in the last portion of the text, this person met with Jesus and saw him. However the miracle happened after he washed his eyes. Before there was no way for him to normally see Jesus since he was born blind.\u3000\u3000Also, Jesus and his disciples happened to go in front of him and they started to talk about him. There was no frame of reference for the blind man to know about Jesus, the Savior and the Lord, our God, and his disciples.\u3000\u3000Compared to the blind man, the Pharisees had some firm beliefs about their religion and what was right. However, I would say they were caught up in their own prejudices. They believed that the man\u2019s blindness was an outcome of sin. They, also, firmly believed that working on the Sabbath was sinful. Therefore, it was obvious to them that Jesus couldn\u2019t perform any miracles on the Sabbath. \u3000Actually in the Pharisees\u2019 firm beliefs, there is a pitfall: spiritual blindness. If people convince themselves they already know God\u2019s plans or are more righteous than their neighbors, they run the risk of not hearing God\u2019s Word and missing true miracles. The Pharisees are an example of humanity\u2019s spiritual blindness that is worse than the man\u2019s physical blindness.\u3000<\/p>\n

I am not only criticizing the Pharisees in the Bible; even in today\u2019s Christianity people can be spiritually blind. There are Christians who say \u201cThese are my convictions about such and such and I know I\u2019m right.\u201d Someone might articulate his or her convictions very well, however, he or she would still risk being caught up in their own prejudices. I have heard people say, \u201cI see Jesus and understand him.\u201d However, can we really see Jesus in the sanctuary each week? Do we truly see him when we consume the wafer and wine? Have we allowed Jesus to restore our sight or are we still spiritually blinded by our prejudices? <\/p>\n

Jesus said, to the Pharisees, at the end of text today, \u201cNow you say \u2018We see\u2019, yet your sin remains.\u201d I believe Jesus is warning us today that there is a pitfall if we continue to base our beliefs on only our own understanding. Only Jesus can truly restore our spiritual sight and give us the true foundation of belief \u2013 God\u2019s Word. In this 21st century, we are still awaiting Jesus\u2019 coming. We hope we\u2019re like the blind man, whose sight is miraculously restored. If we do not give into our preconceived notions about faith and our prejudices; our spiritual blindness will be cured. We\u2019ll be able to truly see Jesus and give heartfelt thanks for the Grace and Love He pours into our lives.
\nIn the second half of this Lenten season, may we meet Jesus, our Savior and Lord this week, through the Word and sacrament! May the Lord encourage us to walk and carry the Cross together with you, our most beloved, Jesus Christ! Amen.<\/p>\n
