May the Grace and forgiveness of our Lord be poured into your hearts in the name of Jesus Christ!<\/p>\n

Do you have scars? You may not have physical scars but you might have emotional scars that are not visible to other people. Or you might have accidently, figuratively scarred someone else through your actions.
\nAs for physical scars, when I was in third grade, I accidently hit my friend\u2019s head while I was playing ping pong and hurt him. Physical scars are usually obvious but emotional scars are not readily visible. Sometimes, we don\u2019t realize how hurtful our words can be. Hurtful words often cut deeper than a knife.
\nMany of you know and like \u201cAmazing Grace,\u201d correct? There is the lyric \u201cwas blind, but now I see.\u201d Although it is a metaphor and I do not think my opinion is applicable to all visually-impaired people, for some totally blind people, this phrase is hurtful and may leave emotional scars. In today\u2019s message, let\u2019s think about our scars and what they mean in our lives.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s Gospel text still begins with the scene on the day Jesus resurrected. The disciples were together, in a home, with the door locked because they feared being discovered by the Jewish leaders. Despite their secrecy and the locked door, Jesus appeared among His disciples.
\nThe disciples were fearful, because the Jewish leaders might arrest the disciples since they were Jesus\u2019 known associates. Not only were they fearful but they also must have felt ashamed since they could do nothing to prevent the crucifixion. Therefore, the disciples were emotionally scarred by the harrowing experience of Jesus\u2019 death.
\nJesus stood among them and said, \u201cPeace be with you.\u201d Then he showed them his hands and his side as proof of his identity. It was his way to help the disciples realize He was in their presence and proof of God\u2019s forgiveness for their sins. Then, the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
\nJesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he said this, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” But Thomas, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus first appeared among the disciples. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, and put my finger in the nail marks and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”<\/p>\n

A week later, Jesus again revealed himself to the disciples. Again, he said, \u201cPeace be with you.\u201d He said to Thomas, \u201cPut your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.”
\nJesus showed him his deeply hurtful scars. Then Thomas believed Jesus saying, “My Lord and my God!” In response, Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”
\nAs it is written in the last part of today\u2019s Gospel, these poignant words are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing in him you may have eternal life in His name.<\/p>\n

Of course, it is truly important for humans to believe in Jesus by reading the gospel of John, but I think there is a different important matter we learn from the scripture as well. Jesus suffered not only physically but also mentally because he was accused by Jewish leaders, of criminal behavior, while he was proclaiming the Good News. Today I, also, think the resurrection story teaches us that being hurt and forgiving those who hurt us are a part of life.
\nSt. Paul writes in Second Corinthians, \u201cSo to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud.\u201d When discussing Paul\u2019s thorn metaphor, we can easily say emotional wounds are \u201cthorns\u201d that people must deal with as part of life.
\nHowever, I think his insightful words teach us that Paul himself was hurt due to criticisms and harsh treatment by both the Jewish leaders and the Romans. For example, he was actually put into prison. Therefore, he had both physical and emotional scars; his thorns were external and internal. With regard to scars, the chairperson of the governing board of a Catholic School called Seishin Gakuen wrote an article and, according to her, \u201cBy having scars on oneself; it is a physical representation that you may have hurt others in the past.\u201d
\nMost likely many of you have suffered emotional wounds in the past due to strained family relationships or strained friendships or you may have been hurt by a stranger\u2019s words. Despite the pain, those scars might be good for you to realize something important. For example, you might realize something that you said was hurtful to someone else. We must be careful with our words. I think that believing in the risen Jesus, including his scars, means believing in the never-ending relationship between us and Jesus. He loves us despite the fact that we may have done terrible things or we are greatly emotionally scarred. As Christians, we should rejoice and give praise to the Almighty that God\u2019s and Jesus\u2019 relationship survived despite his earthly death. Jesus\u2019 scars prove he conquered death and that His love and forgiveness are real. Praise the Risen Lord! Amen.<\/p>\n

As for physical scars, when I was in third grade, I accidently hit my friend\u2019s head while I was playing ping pong and hurt him. Physical scars are usually obvious but emotional scars are not readily visible. Sometimes, we don\u2019t realize how hurtful our words can be. Hurtful words often cut deeper than a knife. Many of you know and like \u201cAmazing Grace,\u201d correct? There is the lyric \u201cwas blind, but now I see.\u201d Although it is a metaphor and I do not think my opinion is applicable to all visually-impaired people, for some totally blind people, this phrase is hurtful and may leave emotional scars.
