May this sanctuary be filled with the breath of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and May the Trinitarian God pour grace and peace into the hearts of the people here and elsewhere in the world!
\nWhat do you think of when you hear the word \u201cSan Mi Ittai (Japanese word meaning the Holy Trinity)? Many people here know that the word is used in Christianity. However, how is this word understood by the many Japanese people who are not Christians?
\nWhen I was working for a medical devices manufacturer, the president often used this word. As in, \u201cLet\u2019s overcome our challenges using San (meaning three) -Mi-Ittai, (meaning collaboration) among Engineering, Production, and Sales.\u201d Also, the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Koizumi, named one of his reform plans \u201cSan-Mi-Ittai no Kaikaku (meaning Reform of the Trinity).
\nThe second day\u2019s lecturer of this year\u2019s retreat, Pastor Hongson Kim, writes a column called \u201cSan-Mi-Ittai\u201d every month in the Japanese Newspaper, Nikkan Sun. He is Korean, his wife is Japanese, and his children are US citizens. I think his family is an example of how Korean, Japanese, and US citizens commune well together. I, truly, believe God\u2019s wisdom is part of the word \u201cSan-Mi-Ittai.\u201d
\nAlthough \u201cSan-Mi-Ittai,\u201d as used by the president of the medical devices manufacturer and the Prime Minister, doesn\u2019t have a Christian connotation; can we say with certainty that \u201cSan-Mi-Ittai\u201d is not a Christian word?<\/p>\n

It is Holy Trinity (San-Mi-Ittai) Sunday. Today\u2019s text is often called the \u201cGreat Commission.\u201d The risen Jesus Christ met with the disciples in Galilee and spoke of the Great Commission.
\nIn both Japanese and English translations, there are four verbs in the commissioning statement. \u201cGo,\u201d \u201cmake (disciples),\u201d \u201cbaptize,\u201d and \u201cteach.\u201d In the original Greek text, the only imperative word is \u201cmake\u201d and the other verbs are particles.
\nIn order to make disciples in all the nations, the disciples needed to go to other nations. Also to be disciples, they needed to be baptized and taught. The words after \u201cbaptizing them\u201d is the phrase, \u201cin the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.\u201d Although we often use and hear these words, during worship, what does this phrase mean? <\/p>\n

As an ordained pastor, every time I baptize someone I say the phrase \u201cin the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit\u201d and I pour Holy Water from the Baptismal Font. I only pour the water, but the original meaning of baptism is \u201cbeing soaked or immersed in.\u201d Therefore, there are other churches and some Lutheran Churches as well that have Baptismal Fonts big enough for someone\u2019s whole body to be immersed in water. I think this is a good practice. But, do I think that everyone must be immersed in water to be baptized properly? Of course, certain sick or disabled baptisands (those who\u2019re about to be baptized) should not be immersed in water for safety reasons.
\nNot only that, if we translate baptism literally, it is \u201cbe immersed in the midst of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.\u201d The \u201cName\u201d part of the phrase is not really the name of someone but has a meaning more like \u201csubstance.\u201d Therefore, we may understand that baptism means \u201cbeing immersed in the substance (i.e. life) of the Lord, the Creator of all creatures, who is the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.\u201d
\nBeing baptized means of course we are dead, our sins are dead, and we are cleansed and renewed by the Creator. At the same time we are immersed in the new life of the Creator, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Whether we notice it or not, we start to live in the midst of the Lord, the Holy Trinity. <\/p>\n

How does this new life immersed in the Holy Trinity relate to our daily lives? We often use the words, \u201cwe live\u201d or \u201cI live\u201d but is the subject really \u201cwe\u201d or \u201cI\u201d? I think being immersed in the Holy Spirit makes us realize that \u201cwe\u201d or \u201cI\u201d is not the subject but someone else is the subject. In other words, we realize that the Trinitarian God is (and should be) the subject of our lives. <\/p>\n

Today is Father\u2019s Day. Father\u2019s Day started with a request by Sonora Smart Dodd to honor fathers. Father\u2019s Day was first observed in Washington State during the early 1900s. In 1972, it finally became a permanent national observance held on the 3rd Sunday of June each year. Sonora was born to a family of five brothers. Her mother died giving birth to Sonora\u2019s youngest brother. Sonora helped her father (Civil War veteran William J. Smart) raise her infant and younger brothers. Sonora greatly respected her father and wanted to recognize fathers for being good providers. However I think, like the holiday itself, it takes a while (in some families) for the father\u2019s presence and contribution to be acknowledged. It takes some children years to be thankful for what their fathers have done for them.
\nI think it is similar with the Trinitarian God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit for many of us. Currently, \u201cTrinity (San-MI-Ittai)\u201d is a very secular word in Japan. People, who do not know about Christianity, are using this word often. I believe, though, that behind these instances Christ\u2019s will is at work. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is trying to reveal himself through the word \u201cTrinity.\u201d <\/p>\n

Actually, we are living immersed in the breath of God\/Christ and the Holy Spirit is supporting our lives at all times. Jesus Christ, who revealed himself two thousand years ago, is the reason we live and through him we are heading (or should I say are guided) to our Father.
\nIn the midst of Trinity we live and learn through Christ\u2019s teaching. It is the life of faith and it is wonderful even though we sometimes face difficult challenges. The Trinitarian God encourages us during difficulties, offers us what we truly need, and makes our lives joyful and filled with grace. Let\u2019s continue living immersed in the substance of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Let\u2019s also show His Grace, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to people who have not yet heard about the Christian \u201cSan-Mi-Ittai.\u201d Amen.

However, how is this word understood by the many Japanese people who are not Christians? When I was working for a medical devices manufacturer, the president often used this word. As in, \u201cLet\u2019s overcome our challenges using San (meaning three) -Mi-Ittai, (meaning collaboration) among Engineering, Production, and Sales.\u201d Also, the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Koizumi, named one of his reform plans \u201cSan-Mi-Ittai no Kaikaku (meaning Reform of the Trinity). The second day\u2019s lecturer of this year\u2019s retreat, Pastor Hongson Kim, writes a column called \u201cSan-Mi-Ittai\u201d every month in the Japanese Newspaper, Nikkan Sun.
