“You Won\u2019t Believe Where Some Seeds Grow”

Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, may your Grace and Peace be poured into the hearts of the people gathered in your name! Amen.<\/p>\n

How many of you have grown vegetables, such as, tomatoes, cucumbers, or pumpkins, and the following year had a new crop of vegetables without planting seeds? In my case, we have a backyard and almost half of it is covered with concrete for parking space. Beside the concrete, there are two small, long narrow patches of dirt. One side gets much sunshine (and less shade), but the other side gets more shade (and less sunshine).
\nA year before last, we grew pumpkin in a planter and last year, even though I did not plant any seeds a sprout of pumpkin came up from the sunny patch of ground and several good pumpkins were harvested.
\nAlso, a year before last, we planted yellow, mini tomatoes at the sunny patch of ground and plenty of yellow, mini tomatoes were harvested. Last year although we did not plant anything, there was a tomato sprout that grew from the shady patch soil. I could not believe a seed was there and that the sprout had grown to almost three inches tall. I replanted the sprout to the sunny side and harvested yellow, mini tomatoes last year as well. <\/p>\n

Today\u2019s gospel is the Parable of The Farmer Scattering Seeds\u2026 Before talking about the parable, I would like to touch on what was written in Romans 8 at the beginning portion of the chapter that was read a few minutes ago.
\nChapter 8 of Romans is a very good portion of the Bible. There are people here who were most likely impressed or strongly encouraged by some verses of this chapter. Let\u2019s look at the first verse, it reads, \u201cSo now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.\u201d Please do not misunderstand that there is no punishment for Christians even when they commit crimes.
\nRather, for those committing sins or even crimes, there is no change in the fact that God still loves us and does not condemn us as sinners forever but forgives us. God might punish us but still loves us and forgives us.
\nChapter eight of Romans 8 concludes with several very famous verses: verse 28 reads, \u201call things work together for good for those who love God,\u201d and in the last sentences, 38 and 39, St. Paul concludes the chapter saying that \u201c For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jesus Christ said \u201cPeace be with you\u201d without condemning his disciples who did nothing to prevent the crucifixion and instead ran away. Jesus\u2019 selfless act showed his love to his disciples and all human beings.
\nGod is love and God loves us. This is the Good News. Christians are to scatter this good news as the seed. However, even though Jesus expressed compassion towards the people, taught wisdom, performed miracles saving people, and disciples said \u201cGod\u2019s Kingdom is near,\u201d the good news was not well accepted especially by Israel\u2019s leaders.
\nThe reality was that the teachers of the laws, the Pharisees and Sadducees, refuted Jesus and condemned him. He was crucified by both Jews and Gentiles. Even after God\u2019s love was revealed through the crucifixion, it took over 300 years for the Roman Empire to approve the Christian religion.
\nWhat can we, those who live in the 21st century, learn from these historical facts and the parable of the sower scattering seeds?
\nThe way that the sower scattered the seeds is very different from the way Japanese farmers or many other farmers in industrial countries do so. Farmers plant seeds where good soil is available and do not try to waste seeds.
\nHowever, the farmer that Jesus describes, scattered seeds abundantly, and seemed like he was wasting seeds because many of them did not grow. However, I believe the famer that Jesus is describing is himself and His church, has been scattering the good news abundantly and with determination. <\/p>\n

We often see harvests from unexpected, unnoticed seeds. For example when we look at the people here, please think about yourself and who planted the seed in your heart? For many of us, the seed was planted from different churches other than Resurrection Church, because people move here and there from different parts of the world.
\nAt the same time the seeds planted by Resurrection Lutherans may unexpectedly grow somewhere. What we are learning is that we, as a part of body of Christ, are to scatter seeds, the good news of Jesus, the Love of God. God will grow them in unforeseen places. Everything works towards good according to God\u2019s will (even if we don\u2019t realize it at the time). Amen.

Amen. How many of you have grown vegetables, such as, tomatoes, cucumbers, or pumpkins, and the following year had a new crop of vegetables without planting seeds? In my case, we have a backyard and almost half of it is covered with concrete for parking space. Beside the concrete, there are two small, long narrow patches of dirt. One side gets much sunshine (and less shade), but the other side gets more shade (and less sunshine). A year before last, we grew pumpkin in a planter and last year, even though I did not plant any seeds a sprout of pumpkin came up from the sunny patch of ground and several good pumpkins were harvested. Also, a year before last, we planted yellow, mini tomatoes at the sunny patch of ground and plenty of yellow, mini tomatoes were harvested. Last year although we did not plant anything, there was a tomato sprout that grew from the shady patch soil. I could not believe a seed was there and that the sprout had grown to almost three inches tall. I replanted the sprout to the sunny side and harvested yellow, mini tomatoes last year as well.
