When you hear the word \u201cViking\u201d, what do you think of and what images come to mind? During my middle school and high school years in Japan, in the 70s, I remember some restaurants that offered \u201cAll-You-Can-Eat\u201d buffets. In Japan these restaurants are called \u201cViking Style.\u201d Since I was the youngest of three brothers, I was so happy when my family ate at Viking style restaurants. I thought it was an exciting experience.
\nHistory teaches us that the Vikings were fearsome raiders who lived in northern Europe\/Scandinavia and often came to Southern Europe, England, and Russia, too. They seemed to enter regions and plunder again and again between 8th – 11th centuries. Since they were raiders, they ate a variety of hearty foods that were easily taken on longships. Therefore, people started calling hearty all-you-can-eat buffets \u201cViking Style.\u201d
\nThe true Vikings repeatedly raided and plundered northern and southern Europeans and, at first, treated Christians as enemies; interestingly though over time they converted to Christianity. Then, they became devout followers of Jesus Christ and contributed to the Christian missions to Northern Europe, their motherland. Do Vikings still deserve their terrible reputation? Should we view them differently? <\/p>\n

In the Gospel Text today, what did you hear from the Jesus\u2019 words when you read the parable? Some of you might say that \u201cEvil ones will be judged evil in the end and will go to hell. Therefore, you should be good.\u201d From an ethical perspective, this may be a good interpretation. However, is that the point Jesus was really trying to make?
\nIn the parable, the servants offered that they would take out the bad weeds. However, the master of the household, the Lord, ordered them to leave them as they were, since you might remove the good wheat with the bad weeds.
\nWhen we look at this parable from another angle, we cannot say which plants are weeds and which plants are wheat. Even though human beings may think certain plants are weds, in God\u2019s eyes, they might be wheat. Humanity is not a good judge of character. Put another way, as Jesus might say, even bad weeds may become good wheat. <\/p>\n

Today\u2019s first reading was from Romans chapter eight. We are reading this chapter consecutively for three weeks (i.e. last week, this week, and the next week). As I said last week, this is a wonderful chapter and many people were encouraged by St. Paul\u2019s words. Do you know what was written before this chapter? Do you know what kind of person St. Paul was before he became a Christian? He persecuted Christians.
\nEven after he converted, he wrote these sentences in Chapter 7. In verses 18 and 19, \u201cFor I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do.
\nEven though he became the world\u2019s most famous missionary and he wrote many letters that became parts of New Testament, St. Paul wrote that his sin still existed in his inner heart and that he could not do good and did only bad things. He was troubled by his flawed humanity.
\nFurthermore, if we consider today\u2019s parable together with St. Paul\u2019s words in Romans, what are we learning? In society, there are both wheat and weeds. When we also look at each individual, there are both weed and wheat aspects in each person. <\/p>\n

In this 21st century, what are the weeds now? Just a few days ago, we heard shocking news about another Malaysian Airline jet being shot down over Ukraine. I would say militarization in many countries and many kinds of different political groups\/sects, materialism, and racial discrimination are some weeds. The Christian Church is placed among these complicated weeds.
\nIf we look at the people worshipping in Christian churches across the world, the reality that many people are in the military. When we look at worship from a consumer\u2019s point of view there are numerous different denominational and nondenominational churches from which to choose. Therefore, when people visit a church for the first time, they check (among other things) parking availability and the church\u2019s overall appearance\/condition, as well as communion style. People also consider the pastor\u2019s preaching style and their sermons\u2019 content. After thinking about all these factors, people make decisions whether or not to attend a particular church.
\nI am not saying that these considerations are necessarily selfish. We make decisions every day, whether they are good or bad ones. It is a reality that human beings have different opinions on many things. In each individual, there is shame\/sin in that person\u2019s heart. Martin Luther was very clear about this aspect, of humanity, saying that Christians are both saints and sinners at the same time.<\/p>\n

In society there are both weeds and wheat, and in each individual there is both a sinner and a saint. In spite of this reality, our gracious and forgiving God loves the people in this world and cares about each one of us. Our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ is among us and within us. Even each one of us cannot see Him, but His presence is felt. At the beginning of this message, I told a story about Vikings. Although, I mentioned that, they were raiders that did bad things. The question is \u201cWere they really bad guys?\u201d In recent times, some historians say, they were not primarily raiders but they were instead skilled merchants. I believe that there were both sinner and saint aspects to them, as with all of humanity.
\nWhile they were dealing with Christians in northern and southern Europe, they realized their own sinful aspects and even though they were sinful, God loved them. I believe after this realization, they became devout Christians proclaiming the Good News to European people they once plundered.
\nWe gather here this morning as Christians. To become a Christian, I believe it means that each one of us must recognize our own sinfulness. In spite of this terrible aspect of human nature, God still loves each one of us through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Realizing His love, for us, we are to respond to Him and to proclaim the good news to the world.
\nMay the Lord continue showering His spirit and His unconditional love unto this world, so that people proclaim the good news and truly serve God; always remembering that only He can judge the weeds from the wheat. Amen.

During my middle school and high school years in Japan, in the 70s, I remember some restaurants that offered \u201cAll-You-Can-Eat\u201d buffets. In Japan these restaurants are called \u201cViking Style.\u201d Since I was the youngest of three brothers, I was so happy when my family ate at Viking style restaurants. I thought it was an exciting experience. History teaches us that the Vikings were fearsome raiders who lived in northern Europe\/Scandinavia and often came to Southern Europe, England, and Russia, too. They seemed to enter regions and plunder again and again between 8th – 11th centuries. Since they were raiders, they ate a variety of hearty foods that were easily taken on longships. Therefore, people started calling hearty all-you-can-eat buffets \u201cViking Style.\u201d The true Vikings repeatedly raided and plundered northern and southern Europeans and, at first, treated Christians as enemies; interestingly though over time they converted to Christianity. Then, they became devout followers of Jesus Christ and contributed to the Christian missions to Northern Europe, their motherland. Do Vikings still deserve their terrible reputation?
