May the Grace and Peace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, be poured into the hearts of the people in this sanctuary! <\/p>\n

Has someone ever pointed out your faults? I\u2019m not talking about your parents or siblings, but has a friend, coworker, or an acquaintance pulled you aside to talk with you? If so, how did you feel about it? In the mid-80s, when I was an engineer (and also a newlywed), I was given a project. I wrote a set of specifications and designed a medical electronic device called the Cardiac Stimulator (CS).
\nThat was the time when pacemakers were becoming increasingly popular and the CS was an important tool to diagnose if a patient needed pacemaker or not. I was very glad that I was given the project and was enthusiastic about my work.
\nWhen it was time for the first review meeting for me to discuss my proposal for the equipment, I was a bit proud of myself and eager to show the new concept. However there was an engineer in the meeting, a year older than me, and he strongly objected to my concept. I was a bit surprised how strongly he disliked my proposal and even the other managers and a senior manager became quiet since they did not quite know how to respond to his criticism.
\nWhen I reflected upon my initial concept, I realized my colleague was right to object. My proposal was something too new and would not be accepted by cardiac physicians and technicians at that time. After realizing my error, I talked more with physicians and technicians in the field. As a result of my conversations, I changed the specifications and a greatly improved product was introduced into the market one and half years later. <\/p>\n

In today\u2019s gospel, Jesus starts with the words, \u201cIf another member of the church sins against you,\u201d but it did not specify what kind of sin at all. Also, FYI, the word \u201cchurch\u201d was not commonly used in Jesus\u2019 time. So I wonder what Jesus was talking about when he mentions sin and church here? However, I would like to have a deeper discussion about what Jesus said.
\nJesus is teaching how you should deal with someone\u2019s sin even if you do not know the nature of the sin. He recommends first to go and to point out the fault in private\u2026then if the person listens, that is great, but if they do not, ask one or two people to go to that same person and talk with them. If they still do not listen, involve the church.
\n\u201cTo point out someone\u2019s fault\u201d (even if it\u2019s just giving advice) is a courageous act. Could you do it? Would you do it? If you confront someone, about a problem, they might become angry and your friendship might be ruined. I think Jesus knew very well about the negative consequences about discussing sin. Therefore, he gave several options when someone refuses to listen to your point. \u3000
\nI think Jesus strongly suggests that if you find an issue, although you might not know the specific nature of the issue, do not leave it as is, do not grumble about it to one\u2019s self, and do not complain to someone else until fist talking privately with the person. Then Jesus further talks to the disciples. In the last half of today\u2019s Gospel, Jesus says \u201ctruly I tell you\u201d twice. In the four gospels the phrase, \u201ctruly I tell you\u201d appears over 70 times. It is commonly known that Jesus mentions important things after saying \u201ctruly I tell you.\u201d <\/p>\n

In today\u2019s Gospel, \u201cwhatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.\u201d We might think that we may say whatever we want to say. However I do not think this is the case. Here maybe Jesus wants to say \u201cwhatever you say in this world is heard by God in heaven. Therefore, you should speak according to God\u2019s will.\u201d
\nThe disciples most likely said, \u201cHow do you speak according to God\u2019s will?\u201d although there is nothing written about how the disciples responded. Then Jesus said the second \u201ctruly I tell you,\u201d and I think the most important sentences in today\u2019s Gospel appear:
\n\u201cIf two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.\u201d I believe Jesus is telling us, there are things you cannot do alone or even when you gather with others there are things beyond human understanding. However whatever you and at least two others pray for something, it will be realized according to the Father\u2019s will since Jesus is among the two and praying with the group. <\/p>\n

I just reviewed today\u2019s Gospel and the key words are \u201cAdvice\u201d and \u201cPrayer\u201d. However, I still have not talked about what kind of sin we should point out (or give advice about). Does this only apply to people within the church? Again, it was uncommon for Jesus to use the word \u201cchurch.\u201d Since the Gospels were written 40 years after Jesus ascended, I believe Matthew added the word, \u201cchurch.\u201d
\nSo forget about the word \u201cchurch\u201d and just think about \u201cif someone sins.\u201d Sin is something that causes people to turn away from God. Of course, we know that we do sin every week and we confess to Jesus. Also, every week, God is inviting people to come to worship to confess their sins but there are so many people refusing to do so. Is it OK to leave them as they are?
\nI believe all people are created and loved by God. Therefore, I think people here in this sanctuary are guided by God to point out people\u2019s faults. If you do not want to use the phrase \u201cpoint out their faults,\u201d why not say we should \u201cadvise\u201d others. I think today\u2019s Gospel is inviting us to give advice to people and not to just attend church. Whether you use the words \u201cto point out\u201d or \u201cto advise.\u201d Discussing faults may lead to discomfort and a strained relationship, but it must be done. However, don\u2019t just give advice. It is very important to pray together with other believers. God will hear you and answer you. <\/p>\n

Let me return to the person I talked about in the beginning who pointed out my faults. After that incident, he and I became closer friends. The fact was that later on I was talking more about the Christian church even to friends at work. As you know, it is kind of taboo to talk about any religion in Japanese society or even in the US. This strained our friendship and we did not speak to each other for ten years. The situation was not helped by the fact that my career as an engineer ended in the early 90s. I eventually transitioned to a pastoral career.
\nI have been praying here with my brothers and sisters that God invites and calls people who are not aware of church. I strongly believe that God listens when we pray as a group of Christians. A few years after I joined the seminary, I received an email from my former colleague saying that his son joined a Christian middle school and he is attending church services on Sundays. Although I am not sure if he is still attending church, we pray together for people separated from God to come to church, the body of Christ, and confess their sins and to receive God\u2019s grace and mercy.
