What do you think about the second coming of Jesus Christ? There are some people who say, \u201cThe second coming is close!\u201d For example, I\u2019ve heard many TV evangelists say that \u201cJesus is coming soon\u2026.\u201d And it may be interpreted as \u201cThe End of the World\u201d and \u201cFinal Judgment by God\u201d will occur in the near future. People may wonder what I think about the second coming.
\nI hardly say \u201cThe second coming is near.\u201d in everyday conversation. However, since the second coming (the end or the final judgment) is written in the Bible, I believe it will eventually happen. I do not think that it is more important \u201cto forecast when it comes\u201d or \u201chow it will look\u201d than \u201cto prepare ourselves for it.\u201d How can we, as Christians, prepare for the second coming? <\/p>\n

The Gospel text is Matthew 25:1-13 \u201cThe Parable of Ten Bridesmaids (\u201cVirgins\u201d in original Greek).\u201d In both Matthew 24 and 25, Jesus talks about the End Times and Final Judgment a lot. Jesus teaches his disciples about it. In his teaching, there are two major aspects in the end or the final judgment.
\nThe first aspect is \u201cThe salvation of the whole world is complete.\u201d The second aspect is \u201cHis caution\/warning that leads the people to repent.\u201d
\nWhen we read the Gospel, I would say that the metaphor of the wedding party itself is something joyful and hopeful. Both in the Old Testament and the New Testament, in order to express how God, Jesus Christ loves the people, prophets and Jesus metaphorically talked about the wedding between God and the people. I believe the Gospel text is one of those examples.
\nI think Jewish customs should be mentioned to better understand the parable. The wedding, in Jewish custom, happened at night and the groom might have been late. So the bridesmaids were to prepare their lamps and also have enough extra oil to prepare for his late arrival. <\/p>\n

In the parable, there were ten bridesmaids, and five of them prepared both their lamps and brought flasks of extra oil However, the other five only prepared their lamps. Before the groom was to arrive, the bridesmaids who did not have enough oil asked the other five, \u201cGive us some oil for our lamps.\u201d However, it was not possible to share the oil with the five unprepared bridesmaids. The five bridesmaids were told to buy extra oil. While they were gone, the groom arrived, the wedding banquet started and the door was shut. When they came back with oil, they were shut out of the banquet and ceremony.
\nWhat does Jesus say to us when he advises these ten bridesmaids? Jesus explains how people should prepare for the banquet, the second coming. Some people misinterpret the focus of this story as being about five spiteful and miserable bridesmaids.
\nHowever, of course, spitefulness is not the point of the story. It is obvious that Jesus is in favor of people being like the five bridesmaids who brought both their lamps and extra oil. We should ask: \u201cWhat does the oil which cannot be shared mean\/represent?\u201d<\/p>\n

In the Japanese language, there is a word \u201cYudan (\u6cb9\u65ad).\u201d When we write this word in Chinese characters, we write \u201coil(\u6cb9) cut(\u65ad).\u201d Literally written \u201coil cut\u201d but the meaning of this word is not really cutting oil, but it means careless, thoughtless, absent-minded, etc. I believe Jesus is pointing out the importance of careful and thoughtful preparedness. Of course people may say to each other \u201clet\u2019s prepare for something.\u201d However, each person has to decide whether or not to prepare. The point is that the decision people make cannot be shared. Each person has to decide for themselves.
\nWhat do you think? What does this story teach those of us living in the 21st century? I think the \u201coil that cannot be shared\u201d means something like this: <\/p>\n

Each of us is baptized and each of us confesses our faith according to our creeds. We know that Jesus loves each of us so dearly and in response to his unending love, we declare that we love God and love our neighbors. We think that we can be like the five prepared bridesmaids who brought both their lamps and extra oil.
\nHowever, like the other five bridesmaids who only prepared their lamps and did not bring extra oil, we often fail to continue in our decision to love God and to love our neighbors. This continuous decision cannot be shared. Each person has to decide his or her own response to God\u2019s love and care towards them.
\nGod has always been inviting each of us to come to worship, to praise Him, to listen to God\u2019s words, and to receive sacraments. However, whether or not people respond to God\u2019s invitation continuously is ultimately each person\u2019s decision. People may invite each other to accept Jesus Christ, but the final decision still should be made by each individual.
