I believe everyone knows \u201cLet It Be,\u201d a great Beatles song on their final studio album of the same name. But I am not sure how many of you know the close relationship between the Gospel I read and \u201cLet It Be.\u201d
\nAlthough many of their pieces were composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, this piece was written by Paul. When Paul wrote this piece, it was during very difficult time in the lives of the Beatles. Shortly after the release of this album the band broke up. John, Paul, George, and Ringo went their separate ways.
\nWe can easily relate to the lyrics of the song, as Paul sings, \u201cWhen I find myself in times of trouble.\u201d, Paul is not the only person to experience difficulty, each of us often find ourselves in times of trouble. Examples of difficult times can include, raising children, when caring for elderly parents, making business decisions, and making end-of-life plans etc. During these decisions we ponder the best course of action. <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s go back to 2000 years ago. Jesus\u2019 Mother, Mary faced a troubling situation. Obviously, it was a much more serious situation than the one the Beatles faced.
\nMary was engaged to a young carpenter named Joseph. During that time, the angel Gabriel appeared to her and said, \u201cGreetings, favored woman! The Lord be with you!\u201d Mary was confused, anxious, and was unsure what the angel meant.
\n \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid, Mary,\u201d the angel continued, \u201cfor you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High\u201d
\nMary asked the angel, \u201cBut how can this happen? I am a virgin.\u201d The angel replied, \u201cThe baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What\u2019s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. For the word of God will never fail.\u201d
\nMary must have been very worried because being an unwed mother is unacceptable according to Jewish law. Mary would not only face her engagement being broken off, but she also might face capital punishment, i.e. the death penalty. <\/p>\n

However, she responded, \u201cI am the Lord\u2019s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.\u201d
\nThis portion of the Mary\u2019s words was written in Greek \u201cGenoit moi kata to thema sou.\u201d Literally, \u201cLet it be according to the word of you.\u201d The word \u201cGenoit\u201d means \u201cLet it be.\u201d This word \u201clet it be\u201d does not mean \u201cto irresponsibly leave it as it is.\u201d She did not mean in a passive sense. Rather this pronoun \u201cit\u201d includes the meaning of \u201caccording to God\u2019s will.\u201d
\nAlthough Mary pondered this incident and could not do anything by herself, I think she meant that \u201cMay the Lord use me as an instrument of God and let it be according to your will.\u201d This was her faithful and active prayer.
\nWhat can we learn today, in the Gospel of Luke, about the words that Mary prayed to God through the angel Gabriel? I think we see Mary\u2019s wonderful and faithful prayer, her humble attitude and actions in her prayer \u201cLet It Be.\u201d Also, God is asking us to listen again to the great hit song \u201cLet It Be\u201d and to rethink our prayers, attitudes, and actions as Christians. <\/p>\n

Let me reread you the first few lyrics \u201cWhen I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.\u201d Incidentally, Paul McCartney\u2019s mother was named Mary and she died when Paul was in high school. He might have meant Mother Mary in the lyrics as his mother, but I am almost sure that Paul had Jesus\u2019 mother, Mary, in mind as well because after he wrote the piece, he asked the famous Gospel singer, Aretha Franklin to sing the song.
\nIn our lives, we encounter troubles that we think we can do nothing about. But there is at least one thing I am sure we can do\u2026we can pray. We can pray \u201cLet it be according to your will.\u201d Or we can pray as Jesus taught us, \u201cThy will be done.\u201d By enthusiastically praying this prayer, God will guide our attitudes and actions. But I am not sure how many of you know the close relationship between the Gospel I read and \u201cLet It Be.\u201d Although many of their pieces were composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, this piece was written by Paul. When Paul wrote this piece, it was during very difficult time in the lives of the Beatles. Shortly after the release of this album the band broke up. John, Paul, George, and Ringo went their separate ways.
