May your Grace and Mercy be poured into the hearts of the people gathered in the sanctuary, the people who are not able to come to worship today, and the people who read this message through the website! Amen. <\/p>\n

What triggered you to come to church? I believe that someone, whether it be a friend, relative, or spouse, invited you originally. Of course that invitation is important, but do you remember how they invited you?
\nIn our mourn of faith, we often desire to invite others to church. In practice, many of us struggle with how we invite them. In listening to the word of God, we are given a great hint on how we may invite people \u2014 Especially those who believe that Christianity is like any other religion and along with it comes the untrustworthiness associated with cult followings.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s gospel provides an opportunity to reflect on the first thing that we should realize as followers of Jesus, and consequently teaches us what we should do. In other words, it lays out the first step to take in following Jesus after his invitation.
\nThe Gospel text is John 1:43-51. The first two disciples out of twelve were Andrew and his brother, Peter, that was written in verses 35-42. In today\u2019s text, the third and fourth disciples appeared, Philip and Nathanael.
\nWhen Philip met Jesus, he immediately could see that it was Jesus from Nazareth, the very person the messiah, Moses, and the prophets wrote about! When Nathanael heard the news, he was suspicious saying that the messiah won\u2019t be from Nazareth. The context at play makes this a prejudice assertion. Although we do not have a full understanding of the cultures of these villages, it seems that Nazareth was known as a poor city. The villages along Lake Garalee were more affluent, perhaps comparable to the modern example of cities like Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, or Dana Point. Nathanael looked down on Nazareth because of his prejudice, and saw there was no conceivable way that the messiah would be from Nazareth.<\/p>\n

However, Philip graciously handled the evident prejudice by saying these simple and clear words: \u201cCome and see for yourself.\u201d So Nathanael began his journey to find Jesus.
\nEven though Jesus was aware of Nathanael\u2019s skepticism, he endorsed Nathanael when they first met. \u201cYou are a genuine son of Israel\u2014a man of complete integrity.\u201d
\nNathanael asked how he knew. The conversation continued and Nathanael came to the realization that Jesus knew everything from where he was (under the fig tree) to what Nathanael was thinking (he was pondering the scene of what Jacob saw as written in Genesis.)
\nThis past week, from Thursday according to the lectionary, Psalm 130 was given to us. In that Psalm, the king David, B.C. 1000, and people after sang that God knew everything, where they were, what they did, what they thought, and what they would do.
\nI believe Nathanael thought the same way as soon as Jesus said a few words to him. This was triggered from Philip\u2019s testimony and a simple invitation. \u201cCome and see [for yourself].\u201d As soon as Nathanael met Jesus, the skepticism was gone, he repented, and became a follower of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s Gospel story shows us how to tackle the wall of skepticism that religions are assumed to have. It is far more important to give a simple invitation, \u201cCome and See for yourself,\u201d rather than arguing or trying to convince someone to become a believer.
\nBeing exposed to the Holy Spirit within the walls of the church is a vital part of embracing the Christian spirituality. I have witnessed the shift in people\u2019s beliefs at the very moment they enter the sanctuary and the sound of the organ. Through immersion in the Holy Spirit, one realizes their sins and is able to repent.
\nHowever, this also applies to all believers of the faith, not just those new to this religion. We come back to the sanctuary on a weekly basis and are given insight intohow we may have done the wrong thing, thought sinful things, or said hurtful things to someone. If there is someone who claims to be perfect and right, it is simply not true.
\nIn our recent liturgy, the presider of the service states, \u201cIn the presence of God, who sees our hearts and our minds, let us confess our sin.\u201d We confess our sins and repent at the beginning of the communion service. God, the ultimate presider of the church in the world, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit know everything about what we do, think, and intend to do. If we truly internalize that God knows everything, it stands to reason that we admit and seek forgiveness regarding our sins because we are imperfect.
\nHowever, it can be very difficult to communicate the importance. Sometimes, the easiest thing to remember is the simple statement Philip made to Nathanael: \u201cCome and See for yourself.\u201d
