What do you think of when you hear the word, \u201ctemptation?\u201d In Chinese characters, in Kanji, the word is composed of two characters, \u201c\u8a98\u60d1\u201d.\u3000\u201c\u8a98\u201d means \u201cinvite\u201d and \u201c\u60d1\u201d means \u201cconfuse\u201d or \u201cperplex\u201d. Therefore, \u201ctemptation\u201d may be translated as something that causes someone to believe a false idea.
\nAs you know, I went to Kumamoto last month. As a matter of fact, this was my second time visiting that city. The first time was 24 years ago when I was working for an electronics company. I was 32 years old, a husband and father of two children. At that time the third one was on the way. There was a situation on the plane heading into Kumamoto airport.
\nI was sitting in the second seat from the window. Sitting in the window seat, there was a woman probably in her late 30s. At that time a typhoon was getting closer to the Kyushu area, as such, a few minutes before landing, we experienced a great amount of turbulence.
\nThe woman next to me suddenly held my left hand and gripped it very strongly. I was so confused and thought it improper since I had a family\u2026then, I noticed that it was just because of the turbulence; she needed to hold something within her reach. She apologized to me and released my hand. Although this was just a moment, I thought to myself, that I was briefly tempted by thoughts contrary to God\u2019s will.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s look at Gospel of Mark today. It is only seven verses, but important things are contained in these verses. The first thing is that Jesus received baptism by the work of the Holy Spirit and the voice of heaven said, \u201cYou are my son, beloved, with you I am well pleased.\u201d
\nThe next portion is very important, as a reading, at the beginning of Lenten season. The same Holy Spirit drove him to the wilderness and for forty days Jesus was tempted; he was with beasts and angels were also serving him. After forty days of temptation, Jesus\u2019 ministry began.
\nDuring the forty days, how was Jesus tempted? The temptations are not written in the Gospel of Mark, but Luke and Matthew, contain some descriptions. If I were to describe the first temptation in today\u2019s language, it was tremendous wealth. The second temptation was to take an unnecessary risk to test if God would save him. The third temptation was to worship a false god and achieve high social status.
\nThe origins of these temptations are based on the same points or forces that pull Jesus from his father, God. This is called the power of Satan. How did Jesus oppose Satan?
\nBefore talking about how he opposed Satan, let us understand that even Jesus, the Trinitarian God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, experienced Satan\u2019s power that tried pulling Jesus away from the Father. <\/p>\n

To be honest, Mark does not describe much about Jesus\u2019 opposition. Only this is written, \u201che was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.\u201d What does it mean \u201cthe angels waited on him?\u201d
\nLet me quote a few verses from Psalm 91, in verse 11, it reads \u201cFor he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.\u201d And in verses 14 and 15, \u201cThose who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them.\u201d
\nIn the verse 14, it says, \u201cThose who love me,\u201d sometimes people do not take these verses seriously, but I believe it is important aspect of faith that we love God, the Father. Jesus consistently followed Him, even though it sounded like an astounding idea, he carried the cross on the way and even when he was crucified, God resurrected Him. <\/p>\n

Like Jesus\u2019 temptations, we are tempted in a similar manner as we live our lives. The temptation may just mean an argument between a married couple or an issue between a boyfriend and girlfriend, but the very basic idea is that the temptation draws you away from God.
\nIn other words, a force tempts you or tests you to act contrary to God\u2019s will. When temptations occurred, Jesus thoroughly followed God, the Father. Even though the way was to the cross and crucifixion, Jesus followed Him completely. In the midst of difficult situations, the Holy Spirit helped Jesus.
\nJesus said, \u201cRepent and believe in the good news\u201d when he started his ministry in today\u2019s Gospel. Repentance means, for us, to confess those sins that are hidden in our own hearts that tempt us to act contrary to God\u2019s will. Even though Jesus was tempted in the midst of the wilderness, we, living in cities, may still be tempted to go against God\u2019s will. As we remember Jesus\u2019 trials, we should rejoice that the Holy Spirit can help us too. We should earnestly follow Jesus during this new week in the early part of Lent. Amen. Pr.
