May the Lord\u2019s Grace and Peace be poured into the hearts of the people in this sanctuary! <\/p>\n

My friend passed away about 15 years ago. On behalf of his family, I contacted his life insurance company and asked the claims department for guidance because I was the family\u2019s contact person.
\nThe representative said, \u201cOh I am sorry, even though Mr. C was a Christian, he died due to cancer.\u201d Although the representative showed interest in Christianity, she thought that believing in Christ might prevent you from getting cancer or even if you have cancer, you\u2019ll be Ok and not die due to cancer.
\nWhat do you think about the relationship between being a Christian and the possibility of dying due to cancer or any other diseases? I\u2019ve explained in the past, that even if we are Christians, we go through the ups and downs of life, including very difficult times; during which you may miserably suffer.
\nThere are many different types of life challenges. You might be diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, you might suffer a sudden stroke or a heart attack, or you might be involved in a traffic accident. Also, you or a loved one might be diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s disease, dementia, or ALS. When you are forced to deal with these life-changing situations, the issue becomes how do you deal with it \u2013 do you accept God\u2019s will or do you act contrary to His will? <\/p>\n

In the Gospel text read today, Jesus taught his disciples that he would suffer and be killed by Jewish leaders. However, he also taught that he would be resurrected. Even after listening to Jesus\u2019 teachings, Peter rebuked him.
\nJesus responds, to his rebuking disciple by saying, \u201cGet behind me, Peter, Satan!\u201d Satan means, as mentioned earlier, a force causing you to turn away from God\u2019s will, which we call sin. Peter thought, not wrongly, that Jesus shouldn\u2019t have to suffer and be killed. Peter was only human and concerned for his beloved teacher\u2019s safety.
\nHowever, what Peter thought was not God\u2019s will. So what was God\u2019s will? I think Jesus said very important things to Peter after rebuking him.
\n\u201cFor those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the Gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life?\u201d What do Jesus\u2019 words mean, to Peter? What do Jesus\u2019 words mean to us? <\/p>\n

Here, the word \u201clife\u201d appears four times. Also there are two instances of the pronoun, \u201cit\u201d meaning \u201clife.\u201d As such, the word \u201clife\u201d appears six times. In the Greek Bible, life is the word \u201cpshuke\u201d which has a double meaning. One meaning is \u201cbreath and life\u201d which indicates earthly life that is finite. The other meaning is \u201csoul\u201d meaning eternal life; something infinite.
\nBy contemplating which of the two meanings is expressed in each instance of the word \u201clife\u201d, I believe the Gospel will have a deeper impact on your faith journey.
\nLet me reread this sentence, the words of the Gospel that Jesus taught to his disciples 2000 years ago and teaches to us now. \u201cFor those who want to save their life will lose it\u2026\u201d For the first \u201clife\u201d, does he mean earthly life or eternal life? How about \u201cit\u201d, does he mean earthly life or eternal life? \u201cAnd those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.\u201d In the phrase \u201close their life,\u201d does he mean earthly or eternal life? How about in the phrase \u201csave it,\u201d does he mean earthly or eternal life?
\nThe answers to these questions may be understood through the life of Jesus Christ. Jesus was crucified not only by Jewish leaders but also by the crowd gathered as witnesses. All agreed to crucify him through their actions or silence. Their choice ended Jesus\u2019 earthly life. Jesus did not fight against the Jewish leaders or against crowd. He just obeyed. He carried the cross, walked to Golgotha, and was crucified. He died and was buried. He even went to the pit. However, he was resurrected after three days. 40 days after the resurrection, he ascended to heaven and is surely living eternal life. <\/p>\n

The real issue in our lives is how we face the end of our earthly life. How should we deal with our death? Or how may we better prepare for it?
\nFrom Jesus\u2019 words taught to his disciples 2000 years ago and taught to us today, we learn that we should faithfully live for Jesus\u2019 sake, for the sake of the Good News. We are guided to live an infinite eternal life rather than only a finite earthly life. We may encounter devastating hardships, but even in the heavy darkness, like descending to the pit\u2026because of our faith in Christ who also suffered miserably and was crucified, died on the cross on Friday, but then victoriously resurrected on Sunday; we may also live eternal life with Jesus. Sadly, there were many times Christians were killed in the past and they\u2019re still being even now. However even those killed recently are promised eternal life, through faith in Jesus.
\nOne month ago, I visited Nagasaki. There is a famous museum there called the \u201c26 Martyrs Museum.\u201d Each martyr\u2019s name is known and their activities are well recorded. One of them was named Paul Miki. He shouted before he was crucified, saying that \u201cI am going to be killed only because I believed Jesus as our Lord. I won\u2019t miss this earthly life. According to Jesus\u2019 teaching, I forgive Hideyoshi Toyotomi who ordered my death and also forgive the people who are carrying out my crucifixion.
\nPaul Miki lost his earthly life, but he still lives the eternal life with Jesus. During this Lenten season, let us try not to focus exclusively on our finite troubles and remember the promise of an infinitely better eternal life. In Jesus\u2019 name we pray. Amen.
