Is this Sanctuary a Dojo?
\nJohn 2:13-22 <\/strong><\/p>\n

May the words from my lips and thoughts in this message be acceptable to you, Lord, and may your grace and peace be poured into each of us! <\/p>\n

What kind of impression do you have when hear the word \u201cDojo\u201d? Do you have a perception that it is the place where people fight each other as a sport? As a high school student, I took Kendo lessons for one year. I practiced in a nearby dojo. I enjoyed practice every week, even though it was only one hour per week.
\nThere are two things that I cannot forget. The first thing is that we always enter the dojo only after bowing. For me this was similar to entering the Orthodox cathedral after I bowed and crossed on my chest. Both customs indicate that you\u2019re entering a holy place.
\nThe other thing that I cannot forget is that during the first class, we listened to the teacher\u2019s lecture for 50 minutes. We did not touch bamboo swords or protective gear\u2026instead when, our teacher wasn\u2019t lecturing, he had us practicing proper bowing technique towards the front of the dojo and bowing to each other.
\nI thought this is somewhat similar to Christianity, because Jesus said, \u201cLove your Lord and love your neighbors.\u201d That is the most important command. And in the dojo, we bow to the front, in our minds, asking for protection while inside the dojo (a holy place) and bowing to each other, respecting our neighbors. Before we were even allowed to participate in the sport, students were taught to respect the dojo, fellow students, and our own bodies.
\nOne of my influential professors at Luther Seminary, Mary Hinkle Shore, taught us the importance of practicing our faith using the word \u201cdojo.\u201d This is a metaphor, but I do believe that dojo practice and practicing our faith are similar \u2013 both involve personal commitment and respect.
\nYou still might wonder how the word dojo relates to the Gospel that I read several minutes ago. I hope you will more clearly realize the relationship between the dojo and the sanctuary by the end of my sermon. <\/p>\n

In the Gospel, Jesus reacted intensely. He drove all sheep and cattle out of the temple, poured out the coins of the money changers, and overturned their tables. He probably shouted, \u201cTake these things out of here now!\u201d
\nThe Jewish leaders said to him, \u201cWhat sign can you show us that gives you authority to do this?\u201d They probably hoped for another miracle, since they already saw the miracle of Jesus turning water to wine that was mentioned just before this temple paragraph. Therefore, they expected Jesus to miraculously restore the temple market.
\nResponding to their request, Jesus replied, \u201cDestroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.\u201d This sentence was understood at a much later date, but he was indicating that the temple was the body of Christ which would be resurrected in three days after crucifixion. Here, I would like to ask a question. Was Jesus denying the temple? Did he mean that no one should worship at the existing temple anymore?<\/p>\n

To think about the answer to that question, first we should read the Gospel very carefully. Jesus said, \u201cStop making my Father\u2019s house a marketplace.\u201d Here, the Father\u2019s house is the same word that Jesus used when he was 12 or 13 years old. In Luke Chapter 2, when Joseph and Mary lost sight of young Jesus while returning to their hometown of Nazareth from Jerusalem; they found Jesus in the temple. Then, Jesus said, \u201cDid you not know that I must be in my Father\u2019s house?\u201d
\nThe other passage is not in John’s Gospel, but the same Temple incident was written in Mark, Luke, and Matthew. According to the other three Gospels, Jesus quoted the words of Isaiah Chapter 56:7, \u201cMy house shall be called a house of prayer.\u201d Jesus\u2019 word is consistent that the temple has been always his Father\u2019s house and that it is a house of prayer.
\nTherefore, I do not think Jesus is denying the temple at all. The issue was what they were doing inside the temple. They were deviating from what they\u2019re supposed to do at a house of prayer. Then, what Jesus said was a completely new concept. He indicated that his body is the temple. The perception of the temple became much broader than it used to be. <\/p>\n

What does this mean? What is relevant to our modern lives in the Gospel? The LCR\u2019s sanctuary is where we listen to God\u2019s Word, pray to God, and worship God. While we listen to the Word, when we pray, and when we worship Him in this sanctuary; I believe Jesus still joyfully listens to and protects us. These spiritual practices should always be central to Christians\u2019 lives.
\nHowever, at the same time, from what Jesus said, his body is the temple and we should recognize also that in the midst of our lives the Holy Spirit, Jesus, is with us and our body is a temple, as well, because of his existence.
\nAccording to First Corinthians Chapter 3 verses 16 through 17, \u201cDo you not know that you are God\u2019s temple and that God\u2019s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God\u2019s temple, God will destroy that person. For God\u2019s temple is holy, and you are that temple. \u201c
\nI believe today we are learning something very important. Like dojo practices are very important for Kendo or other martial arts, , our faith practices in the Sanctuary, the holy place, our temple, are critically important for us as we listen to God\u2019s words, pray to, and praise Him every Sunday.
\nAt the same time, in our lives from Monday through Saturday, it is very important to live intentionally and recognize that our body is also a temple where the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, is living within us. This intentional faithful life is realized based upon our spiritual practices during Sunday worship in this sanctuary. As Christians, we learn to respect God\u2019s holy place and our fellow believers. In this way, the sanctuary can be viewed as God\u2019s dojo.
