May God\u2019s Grace and Peace be poured into the hearts of the people gathered in this sanctuary! <\/p>\n

It has been two weeks since Eiko almost passed away. I was just wondering about her name. She might be named from \u201cEikou \u6804\u5149\u201d meaning \u201cGlory\u201d of Jesus Christ since she was born in Kyushu where Christianity is more popular than in other parts of Japan. I think our Lord is guiding me to talk about the Glory of Jesus. <\/p>\n

This past week I was attending a meeting near the churchwide office in Chicago. Almost 200 church staff got together. ELCA is a predominately white organization. Statistically, 95% of the church members are European American.
\nHowever, if we look at ELCA staff, the percentage of European Americans is much lower. In the churchwide meeting, there were many African American, Latino, Asian, Native American, and Middle Eastern attendees.
\nDuring the three day meeting, we spent a great deal of time talking about Racism and Sexism. You might wonder why we still need to talk about these issues. Even though structurally the ELCA does not discriminate people by gender or race, racism\/sexism still exists interpersonally and societally. One African American woman shared that she is frequently asked \u201cDid you go to college?\u201d Most likely, if she were a white woman; she probably wouldn\u2019t be asked that same question as often. <\/p>\n

The Gospel today, describes an incident a few weeks before Christ was crucified. We need to be careful that we don\u2019t neglect this incident. Several Greeks wanted to be closer to Jesus and told one of his disciples, Philip, that they would like to see Jesus. I have two questions, in mind, when I read this story.
\nThe first question: Why did those Greeks want to see Jesus? The second question: Why did Philp respond the way he did? Philip did not reply directly to the Greeks and, instead, talked to Andrew. Philip and Andrew, together, told Jesus that the Greeks wanted to see him. Why didn\u2019t Philip introduce the Greeks, to Jesus, right away?
\nThe stories of Jesus miracles were famous not only in Israel and but other parts of the world, as well. As such, I believe the Greeks wondered if Jesus only performed miracles for and saved only Jews. Would they be refused because they were Gentiles?
\nBoth Philip and Andrew were Jews; therefore, I believe they were conflicted if they should include gentiles in Jesus\u2019 inner circle. Most probably, Philip and Andrew were comfortable with exclude Gentiles. Jesus and his disciples shared a common culture and language (i.e. Hebrew or Aramaic) that the Greeks were unfamiliar with. <\/p>\n

Jesus replied, \u201cThe hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.\u201d I believe Jesus meant that the hour he would be crucified and died would be the time of Glory.
\nHowever, why will the time he dies be the hour of \u201cGlory?\u201d Jesus\u2019 death will bear much fruit \u2013 but what type of fruit will it be? I would like to focus on what Jesus said at the end of today\u2019s Gospel. \u201cAnd I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.\u201d
\nI believe the phrase \u201cwill draw all people to myself\u201d contains an answer to the first question the Greek wondered about \u2013 if they would be saved or not. Also, there is an instruction about what Philip and Andrew should do.
\nRegardless of whether disciples are Greek, Jewish, Asian, Latino, African American, or Caucasian, and regardless of the disciples\u2019 gender, nationality, or race, Jesus would draw all people to himself. Jesus saves all people. We, as Christians, believe in Jesus, the Lord and Savior, our God. <\/p>\n

The meeting lasted from Monday through Wednesday and the MC for the entire event was an African American woman. Her preparation for the meeting and her process were wonderful. The discussions about the racism and sexism were also led by another African American woman who specialized in those two topics. She gave a short lecture and then asked wonderful questions that allowed the whole group to discuss these issues, in depth, in small groups.
\nTo close today\u2019s message, I\u2018d like to share a greeting word that was taught by an African American male pastor during morning devotion on Monday. In the Zulu language, there is a dialect in the eastern part of South Africa. People speaking that dialect say, \u201cSawubona.\u201d This is \u201cHello\u201d in English.
\nHowever, there\u2019s a deeper meaning to this word. The more profound meaning is, \u201cGod in me sees God in you.\u201d In other words, \u201cJesus in me sees Jesus in you,\u201d or \u201cthe Holy Spirit in me sees the Holy Spirit in you.\u201d Jesus welcomes everyone.
\nDoubters might say, \u201cno God in me, no Jesus in me, or no Holy Spirit in me.\u201d However, I would say that is not true. A doubtful attitude turns you away from God and led to Jesus\u2019 crucifixion. Despite people\u2019s doubtful views, Jesus was raised from the dead, and forgave and is still forgiving all people\u2019s sin. The cross forgives all people\u2019s sin that originated from Adam and Eve. The death on the cross is truly the glory of God. It is proof that Jesus conquered earthly death and was resurrected. When we realize Jesus didn\u2019t exclude anyone from his ministry, it gives us a reason to work hard towards ending all forms of discrimination.

I think our Lord is guiding me to talk about the Glory of Jesus. This past week I was attending a meeting near the churchwide office in Chicago. Almost 200 church staff got together. ELCA is a predominately white organization. Statistically, 95% of the church members are European American. However, if we look at ELCA staff, the percentage of European Americans is much lower. In the churchwide meeting, there were many African American, Latino, Asian, Native American, and Middle Eastern attendees. During the three day meeting, we spent a great deal of time talking about Racism and Sexism. You might wonder why we still need to talk about these issues. Even though structurally the ELCA does not discriminate people by gender or race, racism\/sexism still exists interpersonally and societally.
