In the Depths of Suffering<\/strong>
\nMark 15:1-39<\/strong>\t\t<\/p>\n

May the Grace and Peace from our crucified Jesus be poured into the hearts of the people in the sanctuary! <\/p>\n

Have you ever experienced unexpected sadness or suffering from what was initially a joyful situation? You still might not be fully healed from past trauma or you may be in the depths of suffering now.
\nLast week, we heard the news about the German Wings that suddenly crashed into the Alps in France. There were high school students onboard and I believe their families are in the depths of sadness and suffering now. Their happiness about a study-abroad opportunity for their children has turned to horror. I do not know how long it will take until their wounded hearts are healed. <\/p>\n

Today is the beginning of Holy Week. This coming Friday is the day we remember our Lord who suffered and was crucified. Now, I would like to reflect on what happened between Sunday and Friday based on Scripture, especially focusing on the Gospel of Mark.
\nThis Sunday is called Palm Sunday, Jesus\u2019 Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem. Many in the crowd spread their garments and leafy branches on the road ahead of Jesus. He was at the center of the procession and were people shouting, \u201cHosana in the Highest.\u201d (Mark 11:1-11)
\nMonday, it seems Jesus was very agitated. He curses the fig tree and then in the temple, he overturned the tables of the money changers, basically he cleansed the temple. (Mark 11:12-19) Tuesday, he taught the lesson from the withered fig tree he cursed. Then there is the argument about Jesus\u2019 authority between Jewish leaders and Jesus. The remainder of the day, he taught many lessons (the rest of Chapter 11 and Chapter 12 and 13).
\nWednesday, the Jewish leaders plotted to kill Jesus. On the other hand Jesus was anointed at Bethany. Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the chief priests in order to betray Jesus to them. (Mark 14:1-11) Thursday, he ate the Passover meal with his disciples and shared the Lord\u2019s Supper. He taught disciples the words of the Institution. Jesus foretold Peter\u2019s thrice denials. Then, they went to Gethsemane to pray. (Mark 14:12-42) <\/p>\n

After midnight, early Friday morning, Jesus was betrayed by Judas and arrested by Jewish leaders. The other disciples ran away from him. He was sentenced to death by the highest council and in the courtyard, Peter denied Jesus three times. (Mark 14:43-72)
\nWhat occurred during the remainder of Friday until Jesus\u2019 death is described in Mark Chapter 15. Jesus was handed to Pilate, the Roman authority figure. He was crucified, put into the depths of suffering, and died on the cross. (Mark 15:1-39)
\nEven though, on Sunday, as he processed into Jerusalem with people shouting \u201cHosana\u201d which means praise Him, the most high, his experience turned into the depth of suffering by Friday. We reviewed what happened from Sunday through Friday. When you reviewed those events, in your mind, and listened to Scripture, during which portion did you feel his pain, suffering, or grief the most? <\/p>\n

At the beginning of this message, I asked each one of you: Have you ever experienced unexpected sadness or suffering from what was initially a joyful situation? Or you might have thought about something that would cause you pain in the future (i.e. death of a loved one).
\nWhat is the relationship between our suffering, grief, or pain, and the suffering Jesus endured during Holy Week?
\nAs we go day by day into this Holy Week, I pray that our wounds or scars are healed and we\u2019re comforted by God\u2019s gift that He gave humanity through the depths of Jesus\u2019 suffering.
