\u201cAchieving a State of Perfect Enlightenment?\u201d \t<\/strong>
\nMark 4: 26-34, 2 Corinthians 5:6-17 <\/strong><\/p>\n

May the Holy Spirit be poured into the hearts of the people in this sanctuary! <\/p>\n

There is a phrase in Buddhism, in Japanese it\u2019s \u201cSatori no Kyochi ni tassuru,\u201dwhich means \u201cAchieving a state of perfect enlightenment.\u201d I believe most of you have seen statutes of Buddha. Buddha is often depicted sitting calmly and many people see them as examples of serene beauty and I agree that some statutes are very beautiful. I think Buddha statues symbolize the state of perfect enlightenment.
\nSo do you think there\u2019s a similar concept in Christianity? Do you think that Jesus Christ is like Buddha sitting calmly because he achieved a state of perfect enlightenment? Do you think that Christians can also achieve a state of perfect enlightenment?
\nSince some of you lived as Christians for many years, what do you think? Do you think that you have achieved a state of perfect enlightenment or is it a process?
\nBased on the Gospel text, Mark Chapter 4, together with the second reading, II Corinthians Chapter 5, let\u2019s think about the image of Christians sitting very calmly while achieving a state of perfect enlightenment. <\/p>\n

In the Gospel, Jesus talks about a parable describing how even the smallest seed may become a very big plant. It represents the fact that something as great and important as the Kingdom of God had small beginnings. Since this is a parable, what Jesus really wanted to talk about was the Kingdom of God and not the tree.
\nI think what Jesus really wanted to discuss was changing the perception that he was \u201cout of his mind\u201d or his teachings were unimportant, as evidenced by some passages before today\u2019s scripture in Mark Chapter 3. <\/p>\n

Even though most people were skeptical of Jesus because of his humble birth in a Bethlehem manger and they thought he was \u201ccrazy\u201d because he spoke of an unseen Kingdom, Jesus wanted to say there was priceless value in his life. If people stopped living for themselves and started living for God\u2019s sake and His glory, they would be greatly rewarded. What Jesus was saying is that the Kingdom of God will be built from his presence and his Word.
\nEven after his death, resurrection, and ascension, the Kingdom of God continued being built by believers of Jesus Christ who were ignited by the Holy Spirit and part of the big, flourishing plant, the Kingdom of God. Each believer is a branch of the big plant and always growing and being made anew.
\nIn Second Corinthians, Chapter 5:17, there are these words \u201cSo if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see everything has become new!\u201d I think each branch of the big plant is always being made new with nutrition coming from the central part of the plant, Jesus Christ. <\/p>\n

Having thought about Jesus and the Kingdom of God, let\u2019s go back to the original question, Can Christians achieve a state of perfect enlightenment? I believe the phrase, \u201cthe Christian is always being made new\u201d points to a form of enlightenment. However, even though each of us has the potential to achieve this enlightenment, it does not mean that we stay in that state.
\nI frequently mention that there are five main aspects that connects us to the Christian church: 1) Reading the Bible, the Word of God; 2) Praying to the Lord; 3) Worshipping the Lord every Sunday and serving the Lord during Sunday services and within the surrounding community; 4) Inviting family members and friends to church; 5) Giving back a portion of the gifts received from the Lord. In the midst of our Christian lives and being connected to the church, the body of Christ, we encounter many situations, find new reasons to glorify God and are always being made anew. <\/p>\n

From Wednesday, June 3rd, through Monday, June 8th, Satoko and I took a vacation to Boston. Even though we were on vacation, we still looked for a place to worship on Sunday June 7th. The first possibility was to go to University Lutheran Church near Harvard University. On Thursday morning, my wife and I were walking there to verify its location. While walking, we found a poster saying that they pray for peace every night from May 28th through August 5th between 7:00 p.m. and 7:16 p.m. Since this is the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, they decided to pray for 70 days from May 28th until 7:16 p.m. Eastern time on August 5th which is the time when the first Atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima at 8:16 a.m. (Japan time) on August 6th.
\nWe attended the Saturday evening vigil on June 6th. Only 6 people attended that vigil, in that small group I felt the pain of victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but I also felt the lives connected to the Kingdom of God. I was thankful to God that people in the United States still prayed for the victims of the atomic bomb attacks and WW II victims in general. I even sensed the Joy in Christ who was crucified, killed, but resurrected and ascended. The Holy Spirit enabled me to expand this prayer chain to communities other than just Boston Massachusetts. In the midst of a solemn event, the Holy Spirit enabled me to gain new insights about God\u2019s work.<\/p>\n

We Christians often see seemingly unimportant things in our daily lives, but in those small things are majestic works for the Kingdom of God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Through the Holy Spirt we achieve a state of enlightenment, but we do not stay in that state. We are made anew and we are sent into the world to respond to new insights and opportunities to glorify God.

There is a phrase in Buddhism, in Japanese it\u2019s \u201cSatori no Kyochi ni tassuru,\u201dwhich means \u201cAchieving a state of perfect enlightenment.\u201d I believe most of you have seen statutes of Buddha. Buddha is often depicted sitting calmly and many people see them as examples of serene beauty and I agree that some statutes are very beautiful. I think Buddha statues symbolize the state of perfect enlightenment. So do you think there\u2019s a similar concept in Christianity?
