Most Japanese people say \u201cItadakimasu\u201d before they eat. What does it mean? Why did Japanese culture start saying \u201cItadakimasu\u201d before you eat. Literally, it means, \u201cLet\u2019s eat\u201d but I think it has much more deeper meanings.
\nSeveral months ago, a movie called \u201cWashoku Dream\u201d which means \u201cJapanese Food Dream\u201d was released. Although I saw only the preview so far, it says, \u201cIn Japan, there is a way of thinking that in everything, God is dwelling in the whole of creation.\u201d
\nThe cherry blossom is called Sakura in Japanese, which originally meant, God is dwelling in every part of small flowers. Whatever you cook, in every ingredient there used to be or is still life that God created. In every ingredient, Japanese culture considers God is dwelling within it. When people cook and when we eat, Japanese ought to say thank you, oh Lord. <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s dive into today\u2019s Gospel story. It is the famous story \u201cFeeding the Five Thousand.\u201d According to the Gospel text last week, Jesus wanted the disciples be at a remote place and rest a while. Actually, they crossed the Galilee and came to a place far from town. However, the crowd followed along the lakeshore and came to the place even before the disciples arrived. They were like sheep without a shepherd. Therefore, Jesus decided to take care of them with the disciples.
\nPhilip, one of the disciples was asked, \u201cWhere are we to buy bread for these people to eat?\u201d Was this question a cruel one, since they were in a remote place and with no markets around? I believe Jesus intended to suggest that Jesus himself is bread of life, although Jesus\u2019 words are not in the text today, they will appear in next week\u2019s Gospel.
\nPhilip answered anyway that it was not possible since it would cost about 20 thousand dollars to buy bread for 5 thousand. Then Andrew added, there is a boy who has five loaves of bread and two fish, but it might as well be nothing since we have thousands of people to feed and too few items for so many to share. <\/p>\n

Then, Jesus said to the disciples, \u201cLet the people sit down.\u201d Then he took the loaves of bread gave thanks and distributed it to the people. Then he took the fish, gave thanks, and distributed them to the people. 5,000 were fed and satisfied. The disciples collected the leftover fragments of the bread, and they filled the twelve baskets.
\nI am sure that this was a great event in human history. We, human beings, have retold this story for 2,000 years. I do not know how many times I\u2019ve heard this story in my life as a Christian. According to a pastor, this miracle is the biggest miracle out of the many miracles that Jesus performed. However, I heard another pastor say that it\u2019s not a miracle at all, because he believes many of the five thousand carried some bread in their pockets or bags and were inspired by Jesus to share with each other.
\nBoth sermons were meaningful to me and I neither criticize nor judge their sermons because they are pastors and they wrote their sermons according to what the Holy Spirit moved them to write and say in those specific contexts. (Jesus said whatever sins you make will be forgiven but he warned us whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never be forgiven.) <\/p>\n

So the point of the message today is not really the validity of the \u201cFeeding of the Five Thousand\u201d as a miracle. Rather, I think Jesus, the Triune God, is teaching us an important matter which is closely related to our daily lives.
\nAS I said at the beginning of this sermon, regarding the word \u201cItadakimasu\u201d which literally means \u201clet\u2019s eat.\u201d But, it has deeper meanings rather than just it\u2019s literal one. Whatever we eat, meat, fish, eggs, bread, rice, or vegetables etc.; we must remember everything has or had life. You might wonder about bread, but yes, even it could be considered alive (at one point) It is made with flour and flour was originally wheat. Also for dough to properly rise, yeast cultures must be alive and fed. God gave life to them both \u2013 the wheat and the yeast.
\nWhatever we eat, we may think that God\u2019s spirit is there in the food. I agree with what the movie \u201cWashoku Dream\u201d says. Therefore, like Jesus thanked God before people ate the bread and fish, I believe it is very important for us to thank God also, to think about our relationship with God before we eat.
\nAfter he thanked God, Jesus delivered food to the people, which means, people shared the food. We are sharing the life that God gave us. Let\u2019s eat does not always mean just giving thanks when eating alone. We also give thanks when sharing food with family and friends too. Well some of you might think that I am living alone, because of all my synod-related business trips and consequently, I\u2019m not eating with others.
\nWait a second\u2026actually whatever we get food, whether we received or purchased it, we only receive a portion of the whole amount produced. There are people somewhere in town are eating the other portions of food produced. Therefore, even if you are eating alone, I believe you are eating shared food, you are receiving and sharing in God\u2019s gift of life symbolically and literally.
\nWhen we say \u201cItadakimasu\u201d let\u2019s reflect on two things: Thanking God for his gift of life and sharing God\u2019s gift with others, like when Jesus thanked God and delivered food to the 5000. Amen.
