Becoming A Christian According to God\u2019s Grace <\/strong>

May the Lord pour his grace and mercy upon the people here in this sanctuary! <\/p>\n

Have you ever heard the word, \u201cPredestination\u201d in a church? For example, whether or not a person will have Christian faith is pre-planned by God.
\nPlease do not misunderstand: \u201cPredestination\u201d is not a concept or doctrine that all Christian Denominations agree with. Catholic and Orthodox Churches do not agree with this concept. As for Lutherans, we do not talk about this\u2026however, I am talking about it a little bit this morning: <\/p>\n

Because, people might think that the words Jesus said in the Gospel today, \u201cNo one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me\u201d are somewhat related to Predestination. In other words, some people might think that Jesus is telling that whether or not you come to Jesus (become a believer of Jesus Christ) is already planned by God.
\nMy thoughts on this are, it is better not to think that way or said another way, there is more important aspect of the verse to reflect upon. If you pursue the concept of predestination, people might think that God is inviting only certain individuals and not others. There is a possibility that someone can replace God\u2019s thinking by one\u2019s individual predetermination.
\nSo what does it mean \u201cNo one can come to me unless drawn by the Father\u201d? I would like to reflect on this verse further. Here, I would like to revisit what Pastor Ito said about Rev. John Wesley, two months ago, during this year\u2019s retreat. <\/p>\n

Rev. John Wesley who started the Methodist movement was a strict precept advocate from the Anglican Church in the UK. When he came to United States to evangelize Native Americans, he believed that if you proceed with Christian faith methodologically salvation was assured, that meant if you lived strictly according to Biblical law, you would be saved. However, his mission did not go well.
\nThen, he went back to England. One day, at the place called Aldersgate, he happened to listen to Moravian missionary Peter Boehler\u2019s message discussing Martin Luther\u2019s precept of Roman\u2019s Chapter 3 that was written a couple of hundred years ago at the time. The point of the Chapter 3 of Romans was: Human beings are always sinners. Even if a sinner tries to atone by working hard or by his or her own ability, you cannot be saved.
\nFor all human beings, God put Jesus forward as a sacrifice of atonement so that people who believe in Jesus are justified. In other word, to become a believer of Christ is totally God\u2019s grace, God\u2019s gift, rather than through one\u2019s own effort or ability. The issue is whether or not you receive God\u2019s gift by believing in Him. <\/p>\n

Let me explain about God\u2019s gift a little bit differently, although are not Peter Boehler\u2019s words, think about a simple but valuable gift. Let\u2019s say, Valentine\u2019s chocolates you receive. The Valentine\u2019s gift is usually wrapped with ribbon. So in order to eat the individual chocolates it takes a little bit of time to do so. You remove the ribbon, unwrap the paper, maybe open the box, and take individual chocolates and eat them. God\u2019s gift in this example is like ready-to-eat chocolate \u2013 no unwrapping required. In other words, without hard work or test, you just receive God\u2019s gift.
\nWhen he realized this about God\u2019s grace, Wesley felt that his heart was warmed up, and he got it. Then what happened for Methodist Church was that its mission amazingly expanded not only in the United States but throughout other parts of the world. <\/p>\n

So again, let me ask the same question, what does it mean when Jesus said, \u201cNo one can come to me unless drawn by the Father\u201d? I believe Jesus meant that to come to Jesus or to become a believer, it cannot be accomplished by one\u2019s own ability or efforts, but it is only through our Father\u2019s gift, Jesus Christ. And the real matter is whether or not you receive Jesus in believing in Him.
\nI believe Christian faith starts with the receipt of God\u2019s tremendous gift believing in Him rather than studying very hard or memorizing Biblical verses. And in our life in Christ, we continue to receive Jesus\u2019 words and sacraments and we are created new. When we receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ, why not contemplate the simple yet deep meaning of faith in Christ? We are sent out to the world with Joy and new spiritual energy that God gives us through his Word and sacraments to share His Grace. Amen. Pr. H. Adachi<\/p>\n

In other words, some people might think that Jesus is telling that whether or not you come to Jesus (become a believer of Jesus Christ) is already planned by God. My thoughts on this are, it is better not to think that way or said another way, there is more important aspect of the verse to reflect upon. If you pursue the concept of predestination, people might think that God is inviting only certain individuals and not others. There is a possibility that someone can replace God\u2019s thinking by one\u2019s individual predetermination. So what does it mean \u201cNo one can come to me unless drawn by the Father\u201d?
