May grace and peace come to you in the name of Jesus Christ! Amen! <\/p>\n

How many of you know the meaning of the word \u201cHaiku\u201d? Haiku is a type of Japanese poem that is composed of 17 sounds (either vowels or consonants). But those 17 sounds are themselves composed of three short verses (five, seven, and five). I am told that this poetic form is the shortest one in the world.
\nLet me give you a famous Haiku as an example, \u201cYa-re u-tsu-na, Ha-e ga te wo su-ru, A-shi wo su-ru.\u201d Of course you do not know what I am talking about, but I believe, you hear the rhythm. 5-7-5. \u201cYare Utsuna, Hae ga te wo suru, Ashi wo suru.\u201d
\nThe meaning of this poem cannot be translated into only 17 vowels and consonants, but it goes something like this. \u201cLook, don\u2019t kill that small fly! It is making a prayer to you by rubbing its hands and feet.\u201d
\nDo you normally like flies? Although I do not know for certain whether or not flies pray, I think the poet is showing his compassion to the least or one of the smallest creatures in the world; that most people consider a nuisance. <\/p>\n

I would like to talk about today\u2019s Gospel text. Although Jesus was talking about a very important matter, about his death and resurrection in the near future, his disciples yet again did not understand what he was talking about. They were just arguing \u201cWho was the greatest?\u201d
\nYou may say, \u201cIt is a pitiable and petty scene.\u201d However, it is the reality of human nature even in the 21st century. Many of us often think that I am above someone, I am the first, or I am the greatest. Humanity has an ego, and thus we feel the need to be ranked.
\nWhen you see a group picture in which you\u2019re part of the group, whom do you look for first? I think we often, if not always look for ourselves\u2026I think it is a difficult thing to be free from your own ego or self-interest because society teaches us \u201cI am number one.\u201d and \u201clook out for number one (i.e. put our needs first).<\/p>\n

I believe today\u2019s latter portion of the text is giving us great insight. Jesus took a little child that was among them; and took it in his arms. What does this mean? What does a child or children mean to families and to society? In the context of ancient Jewish society, I believe the law is the most important thing in people\u2019s lives. Children have not learned the law yet, so they did not know the law and could not observe the law. But Jesus, the Lord, put a child among them then took him (or her) in his arms. Jesus loves innocent children. Humanity can learn much from children\u2019s innocence.
\nIn Matthew 25, Jesus told that \u201cI tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these, you were doing it to me!\u201d These were people \u201chungry, thirsty, naked, sick, imprisoned etc. <\/p>\n

Jesus loves them and he has unending compassion for whom society deems the \u201cthe least\u201d or \u201cincompetent, a person without mental or physical capacity.\u201d In his compassionate care towards those who\u2019re marginalized, we should learn how to deal with our own ego and self-interest.
\nI would like to return to the Haiku, \u201cYare Utsuna, Hae Ga Te Wo Suru Ashi Wo Suru.\u201d Let me share my thoughts on this. When I was flying in an airplane many years ago, I saw another plane flying far in the distance\u2026maybe several miles away. At that distance, the other plane was like a fly. I feel like sometimes humans can be like flies. Maybe, in the grand scheme of things, each one of us is a fly and we should not be so self-absorbed.
\nStarting today, how will we deal with a fly or the least of us that we encounter? Will we be comfortable with old attitudes and actions or will we learn from Christ\u2019s example. May the Holy Spirit bless our new week. Amen!
