To be a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, over 500 hours of study and experience as a chaplain in a clinical setting is required. I served in a hospital cancer unit for three months. <\/p>\n

I cannot forget one of the conversations with a terminal cancer patient. While we were talking, the question \u201cWhat is life?\u201d was asked. He answered the question himself, \u201cThe purpose of this life is to live with God, isn\u2019t it?\u201d I remember his eyes shining brightly as he gave his answer. <\/p>\n

His body was so thin and weak and approaching the end, that was a certainty. However, the hope for the soul to live eternally with God became obvious. I remember that incident was like yesterday\u2026 <\/p>\n

This past March, our beloved Pastor Howell Foster passed away. He shared that physical death comes to everybody and it is not an abnormal matter at all. Physical death is only one point of one\u2019s eternal life. However, during this transitional point, we have to experience sadness and suffering due to the separation between the person passing through the door to heaven and the people left in this world. It is a reality that we experience a great deal of pain and grief for months or years. <\/p>\n

The good news from John chapter 11 was the story about the raising of Lazarus. Whether or not we can believe this miracle, I feel Jesus\u2019 tremendous compassion to Martha and Maria who were experiencing great pain and grief due to the sudden death of their younger brother is the point of the story. Jesus even wept with them; Jesus Christ responded to their tears. <\/p>\n

Since not all of you are Christians, and may be unfamiliar with Christ Jesus, I would like to borrow what the famous Japanese Christian Author, Shusaku Endo, said. He used Onion instead of Christ Jesus. My sense of this name, Onion, is that some onions are almost always in our kitchen, and onions are so familiar in our lives. Onions are used in almost every food, Japanese Food, Chinese Food, American Food, European Food, Mexican Food, Caribbean Food and so on. Also when we chop onion, we are often in tears. The Onion is among us and was, of course, among Martha, Mary, and others during the passing Lazarus. <\/p>\n

The Onion cried out saying, \u201cLazarus, come out\u201d and the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. The Onion said to them, \u201cUnbind him, and let him go.\u201d What does this mean? <\/p>\n

The word \u201cUnbind Him\u201d inspires us and frees us from the human concept that “Death is the End.” The Onion is among us when we experience difficulties and within us even beyond our physical deaths, so that we may continue to live eternally with the Lord. It seems that the service today remembering our loved ones gives us a conviction that they are living with the Savior, the Onion, the Lord, Jesus, whatever you call him, He who lives and reigns over our whole world now and even beyond death.
