I was attending a conference last Tuesday and Wednesday that teaches mentor pastors and mentees who are in candidacy to become pastors in the future. That was a wonderful conference and I believe both mentors and mentees learned a lot. Although I am not yet a mentor pastor, due to the fact that there are several Asian prospective candidates in Southern California, a seminary professor invited me to attend that conference. <\/p>\n

When I think about pastors\/fathers in my life so far, there are many who influenced me. Today, I would like to talk about Pastor Keisuke Soma who married Satoko and me. He passed away 17 years ago. Before his earthly death, we met with him right before our family came to the United States. One thing I remember what he said to us very graciously was \u201cI do not have any possessions that is why I am blessed.\u201d For us, at that time we were in our mid-30s, at least for me, I had never thought about such things, and his words were so fresh.
\nAt that time, I was still living in Tokyo and we wanted to move from a condo to a house and we did, we wanted to have more income, we wanted to have AC for our kids\u2019 rooms, there were so many things we wanted to have\u2026the notion \u201cbecause of no possession, one is happy,\u201d was actually foreign to me, and I honestly could not quite understand his words at that time. Now, when I reflect on what he said, I am pondering why he said such a thing. I do not think that his point was he was blessed because he has nothing. So what was his intention? <\/p>\n

Right before the Gospel text today, a wealthy young man was asking Jesus, what he should do in order to inherit eternal life. Jesus mercifully talked to the wealthy man, \u201cThere is one thing you lack.\u201d What was he really lacking? The word just continued, \u201cGo and sell what you have, give the money to the poor, then come to me.\u201d It was a hard thing to do.
\nWhen we think about the 2000 years of Christian Church history, there were many people responded to Jesus\u2019 call. For example, the first century believers \u201cshared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared their money with those in need.\u201d (Acts 2:44-45) The Christian Church is founded in footsteps of those people. <\/p>\n

However, what did Jesus want to say about what\u2019s lacking for that wealthy man? Did Jesus want to say he and all people should sell all what they have and follow Jesus?
\nWhen we think about another wealthy man in the Bible, I also remember Zacchaeus, a tax collector, who appears in Luke 19. In his case, after he met with Jesus, he said, \u201cI will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!\u201d (Luke 19:8) Then Jesus said \u201cSalvation has come to this home\u201d acknowledging what he said.
\nJesus was OK with Zacchaeus\u2019s 50% donation but not 100%. I just would like to make emphasize that Jesus did not ask all people \u201cSell all you own.\u201d However, what did Jesus want to say was lacking for that wealthy man? <\/p>\n

After the wealthy man heard about what Jesus said, he was shocked and went away with sadness. The bible described that \u201cbecause he had many possessions.\u201d From his actions, we realize that he coveted what he owned but not really trusting the Lord, Jesus Christ.
\nI believe Jesus knew he trusted in what he had. And Jesus was pointing out one thing the wealthy man was lacking in was trusting the Lord. Therefore, Jesus gave him a great advice to him graciously saying, \u201cYou are lacking only one thing.\u201d
\nI would like to go back to Pastor Soma who married us. He said, \u201cI do not have any possessions that is why I am blessed.\u201d That became his last words to us. Again I do not think he truly wanted to say because of no possessions, he was blessed, but I believe the intention of his last words were, \u201cI trusted the Lord and offered everything, in my life, to the Christian church, that is why I have no possessions and I am so blessed.\u201d <\/p>\n

Just for your information, in the ELCA almost 50% of pastors are over 50 years old, and we will face or are currently facing a shortage of ordained pastors. Actually, in the Pacifica Synod, three congregations were closed in the last two years. It is hard\u2026 However, I do not think that closure is always bad, because we believe death is not the end. Also there is a saying in Japan, failure is the foundation of success.
\nI would like to close this message by saying: future leadership development and funding are critical for the ELCA. I was attending a conference last Tuesday and Wednesday that teaches mentor pastors and mentees who are in candidacy to become pastors in the future. That was a wonderful conference and I believe both mentors and mentees learned a lot. Although I am not yet a mentor pastor, due to the fact that there are several Asian prospective candidates in Southern California, a seminary professor invited me to attend that conference. When I think about pastors\/fathers in my life so far, there are many who influenced me. Today, I would like to talk about Pastor Keisuke Soma who married Satoko and me. He passed away 17 years ago. Before his earthly death, we met with him right before our family came to the United States. One thing I remember what he said to us very graciously was \u201cI do not have any possessions that is why I am blessed.\u201d For us, at that time we were in our mid-30s, at least for me, I had never thought about such things, and his words were so fresh.
