May God\u2019s Mercy and Grace be poured into the hearts of the people gathered in this sanctuary!<\/p>\n

I grew up surrounded by multiple religions in Yokohama, Japan. Within a mile square, I believe there were more than four Nippon Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples. When people go to a Nippon Shinto Shrine to pray and give an offering, the first thing that person does is ring a bell.
\nThe bell is not like a hand bell used in the Christian Church, but more like a jingle bell. I did not know the meaning of ringing the bell until recently, but I researched a little bit via the internet. Pastor Tateno and one of Japanese congregants, Shingo, helped me to understand the meaning while they were here last week.
\nThe meaning of the bell sound is cleansing a person\u2019s sinful heart and body before giving the offering and prayer. It also calls the Nippon Shinto god to show up and listen to a person\u2019s prayer and see what he or she has offered.<\/p>\n

Now, I would like to jump into the good news that was read a short time ago. After Jesus taught about Jewish scribes, St. Mark describes how the crowd put their coins into the treasury box.
\nAt that time the treasury box in the very front of the Jewish synagogue was made of 13 ox horns. I am showing a picture that I found on the Japanese Catholic Church web page.
\nMany rich people were putting many valuable coins into the treasury box that equaled a large sum. Although this is my imagination, the sound of many coins being dropped into 13 hollow ox horns must have been great, and rich people believed by depositing money into the treasury box that they could show off to the other people visiting the treasury. So that God acknowledged their offering well. <\/p>\n

To that treasury, a poor widow came and only put in two small coins. Those copper coins were the least valuable at that time. Maybe the sound of those two coins was barely audible and people had difficulty realizing she made a deposit.
\nHowever, Jesus did not have difficulty hearing her offering. Jesus heard the sound that the widow\u2019s coins made. Not only did he hear it, he understood that the widow was almost broke and unfairly treated by the scribes. Jesus knew that the two coins were her last two coins. Jesus vicariously felt her pain.
\nJesus listens and sees even though the sound that she made was barely audible, and even though her prayer was not expressed by her voice, the Lord, Jesus carried her burden. He felt compassion for her; he and the widow suffered together. <\/p>\n

Three weeks ago, many of Pacifica and Southwest California Synod pastors were attending a conference called Theoasis. One of our guest speakers was former Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson. We listened to his one or one and half hour lectures three times in three days. All of them were wonderful.
\nOne theme of his lectures was \u201cBeing Christian in a Multi-faith World of Religious Pluralism\u201d. Bishop Hanson asked many questions during the lectures and his style was very interactive and engaging. At the end of his second lecture, he asked an important and meaningful question in the midst of religious pluralism: What is the core conviction of your Christian faith that you cannot discard? <\/p>\n

In the beginning of this message, I talked about Nippon Shinto shrines, and I believe there are many good aspects to them. Although I did not talk about Buddhism, but there are wonderful aspects of it, as well. My grandmother, on my mother\u2019s side, was Buddhist and read Buddhist Scripture every morning and night until she died.
\nBut in Japan, there was a time, between 1637 and 1873, Christianity was banned, and the penalty of being Christian was capital punishment.
\nEven though there were many good religions in Japan, in 1880, my great grandfather confessed his Christian faith within the 10 years after the Japanese were allowed to be Christians. According to what he wrote, he listened to Christian stories from a protestant pastor at first but he was not impressed at all because that pastor talked about restrictions. At that time, in Japan, there were no Lutheran missionaries yet. Just FYI, Lutherans came about 15 years after he was baptized. He listened to the Christ story from Russian Orthodox missionaries, then he and all his family members were baptized. <\/p>\n

The reason behind his confession was God\u2019s love. God loves all people he created with his grace and mercy. Even though all are sinners, he loved the people so dearly. He emptied himself and offered his body and blood to the Cross and even was buried in the tomb. Then God raised him from the tomb and showed his eternal grace and mercy.
\nGod showed his mercy to the window whom Jewish society thought the least. God showed mercy to Japanese people even during the 240 year period that the government banned Christianity and crucified so many people because of their faith in Christ.
\nI would say that God\u2019s compassion and love for human beings, as shown through the crucifixion and the resurrection is the core conviction of my Christian faith.
