May the Holy Spirit come to the hearts of the people in this sanctuary and make us certain about our eternal lives walking with Jesus Christ! <\/p>\n

How did you feel last week? It is actually getting close to the end of the Church Calendar year. I think there is an incident that made us reflect upon the beginning of the year.
\nIn the Middle East, Russian is bombing locations in Syria. The US is raiding certain areas using unmanned aircraft. Early this year we saw news video of Mr. Kenji Goto and Mr. Haruna Yukawa as hostages; they were later killed.
\nIn that video there was a man called Jihadi John who was demanding the Japanese Government pay a substantial ransom\u2026last week, the US Department of Defense announced that Jihadi John was killed during one of the raids.
\nWhile getting close to the end of this year, the news made me reflect upon the beginning of the year. It is sad but I am acknowledging the reality that nation rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, as Jesus said. <\/p>\n

This year we have been reading the Gospel of Mark. To be honest, especially after Chapter 8, there were difficult verses. Next week, it will be the last Sunday after Pentecost, and we will read the Gospel of John. Therefore, the reading of Mark is the last one in this Church Calendar year. And I believe that this Gospel is hopeful and joyful even if it sounds difficult.
\nI respectfully read the Chapter 13 verses 1 through 8. Jesus and his disciples came to Jerusalem, the temple, that I would say the headquarters of Judaism.
\nDisciples are impressed by the beauty and the large size of the temple. Stones are stacked up and the temple has a magnificent appearance. However, Jesus said, \u201cNot one stone will be left here upon another.\u201d <\/p>\n

What did Jesus intend to say? As a historical fact, the temple was destroyed by Romans in AD 70. Was Jesus predicting only the temple\u2019s literal destruction?
\nFor me, I feel Jesus is teaching an everlasting and universal lesson to all human beings that endures beyond ages.
\n\u201cNot one stone will be left here upon another\u201d leads us to think, the foundation of the stones won\u2019t be a foundation someday. What you currently see as a strong, earthly foundation will disappear as time passes. Then although this is not part of today\u2019s gospel, at the end of Chapter 13, Jesus said, \u201cHeaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.\u201d
\nWe are hearing what Jesus said, 2000 years ago, but it\u2019s also relevant now: What we are seeing around us will pass away. Even heaven and earth will pass away. However, the words of Jesus will not pass away. I believe this is the universal lesson to remember.
\nOur lives are being swayed by what we can see and by natural environment. If we are driving, we have to look around well to see if any cars are approaching us or if there are any people we might hit when approaching a crossing. Or if it is getting dark, we should turn on our headlights, if it starts raining, we need to drive more carefully\u2026although I acknowledge that there are people in Southern California do not drive cautiously even if it is raining.
\nI believe that Jesus is not teaching we should not be swayed by what you see or by your environment. However, he is teaching us what you see, our environment, and even heaven and earth will disappear. Therefore, he is warning us that what you see isn\u2019t our ultimate foundation of our lives, but there is an ultimate foundation: the words of Jesus Christ. His words will never disappear. Jesus himself, his love and compassion will always endure, even if nation rises against nation, kingdom against kingdom, even if absurdities happen in our lives, even if heaven and earth disappears. We are to live believing that the word of Jesus is the foundation of our lives. <\/p>\n

This year, from Thanksgiving Day, the lectionary turns to the new year in the Church calendar. And the Sunday after the Thanksgiving is the first Advent. It is a wonderful season, and you may see family, friends and beauty of nature. I encourage you to do all three.
\nAt the same time, I encourage you to rethink your faith. The Gospel of John starts with \u201cIn the beginning was the Word.\u201d Jesus said, \u201cMy Words do not pass away.\u201d His words are the eternal truth. God\u2019s words and the love of Jesus are everlasting. Let\u2019s prepare ourselves to renew the foundation of our lives as we move into the new season of Advent. Amen.

In the Middle East, Russian is bombing locations in Syria. The US is raiding certain areas using unmanned aircraft. Early this year we saw news video of Mr. Kenji Goto and Mr. Haruna Yukawa as hostages; they were later killed. In that video there was a man called Jihadi John who was demanding the Japanese Government pay a substantial ransom\u2026last week, the US Department of Defense announced that Jihadi John was killed during one of the raids. While getting close to the end of this year, the news made me reflect upon the beginning of the year. It is sad but I am acknowledging the reality that nation rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, as Jesus said. This year we have been reading the Gospel of Mark. To be honest, especially after Chapter 8, there were difficult verses. Next week, it will be the last Sunday after Pentecost, and we will read the Gospel of John.
