May the Grace and Peace of the Lord be poured into the people\u2019s hearts in this sanctuary! <\/p>\n

In October 1991, our second son, Kan was born. Coincidently, in 1991, a singer-songwriter with the same first name Kan received the Japan Record Award called \u201cRecord Taisho\u201d. Does anyone remember the name of the song?
\nYes, the tile of the song is the same as today\u2019s sermon title, \u201cAi wa Katsu\u201d which means \u201cLove Wins.\u201d When I was listening to the song in the New Year\u2019s Eve of 1991, I thought that the meaning of the song is really the same as what Jesus said as written in the Bible.
\nEven 25 years after the song was awarded \u201cRecord Taisho\u201d, this song is often heard in public. I checked YouTube and found that a video of the song, posted 2011, was accessed 1.8 million times. <\/p>\n

Well, let\u2019s talk about the Gospel text today. Today is the first Advent Sunday. The new year just started in our Church Calendar. This year, on Sundays, Luke (or John several times) will be read as Gospel. However the content will often be the same text as Mark or Matthew. Actually, the text today is again very similar to what we read two weeks ago in Mark 13. The good and important message is read again and again during our Christian lives.
\nIn the text I just read, there were these words, \u201con the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.\u201d It is an eerie passage. <\/p>\n

However, the purpose of Jesus\u2019 words is not causing people fear but rather freeing them from fear or from the bondage of being in distress and being unable to act. I believe the Jesus\u2019 message is filled with his hope and his everlasting love.
\nJesus said, \u201cHeaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.\u201d In His Word, there is his promise of love. \u201cMy word\u201d itself means, Jesus himself, and Jesus is the Lord, our God. And God is love as John said in his first letter in Chapter 4.
\n\u201cNot pass away\u201d can be translated to \u201cnot lose\u201d or \u201cwin.\u201d In John\u2019s chapter 14 through 16, there is a long discourse detailing what Jesus said in the evening before he was crucified. At the end of his discourse, he said, \u201cI have overcome the world.\u201d <\/p>\n

Kan, the singer-songwriter, who wrote \u201cAi wa Katsu: Love Wins\u201d went to church when he was small and often sang hymns. Hopefully you understand why I said that the meaning of the song and the Jesus\u2019 message are the same.
\nHowever, today\u2019s message is not really about understanding that a popular Japanese song and the message of the Bible are the same. Rather, I would like to proclaim how \u201cAi wa Katsu, or Love Wins\u201d affects us and affects the world.
\nIn reality of our lives, we often become distressed. The world often becomes bound by fear. What kind of bondage do we feel ln our lives now? What is restricting the world from becoming a calm and peaceful place? What is restricting us from being freed from fear? As has been reported there have been several, recent incidents of terrorism. Some may feel that the world will end in nuclear war(s). Or some may fear their own earthly death. Or some might worry so much about their child or children\u2019s education and their future they cannot do other things as effectively… <\/p>\n

However, the good news is God\u2019s love is coming into our world and given to all people in this world. Jesus frees us from any kind of earthly bondage. The only thing we have to do is just accept his Love, God\u2019s Word that was proclaimed by Jesus. His love was and is and will be within us and among us forever. Even 25 years after the song was awarded \u201cRecord Taisho\u201d, this song is often heard in public. I checked YouTube and found that a video of the song, posted 2011, was accessed 1.8 million times. Well, let\u2019s talk about the Gospel text today. Today is the first Advent Sunday. The new year just started in our Church Calendar. This year, on Sundays, Luke (or John several times) will be read as Gospel. However the content will often be the same text as Mark or Matthew.
