Not Just Chatting Beside a Well<\/strong>
\nLuke 1:39-45<\/strong>
\nLet\u2019s pray: Dear Lord, thank you for gathering us together on this Fourth Sunday of Advent. We pray that my meditation and spoken words are filled with the Holy Spirit and guided by your will. In Jesus\u2019 name we pray, Amen.
\nThere is a phrase \u201cIdobata Kaigi\u201d which literally means \u201cA meeting beside a well\u201d or \u201cChatting beside a well.\u201d However, for Japanese people, what impression do you have about \u201cIdobata Kaigi?\u201d Most probably, you have a negative impression about this phrase. Historically, women gathered around a well and chattied with each other for many minutes\u2026or even sometimes for hours. The conversation could become \u201cgossip\u201d or sometimes they criticized each other. Therefore, \u201cIdobata Kaigi\u201d is translated as gossiping in English.
\nHowever, is it always a bad thing for people, or women, to chat or speak with each other beside a figurative well? Are those conversations most often about negative matters?…or can they be positive? At Resurrection Lutheran Church, Japanese ministry, we have more women than men. And many women chat with each other before and after worship. I know that there are several people who confessed that they repent about inappropriate comments in the past and wish they could take them back.
\nI think there are many good conversations though, too. By having conversations, somebody thinks that because of the words Mrs. A said, they are truly encouraged, or transformed, or could walk toward the future with hope.
\nI started this message discussing Idobata Kaigi. During the ages the Bible was written, wells were always very important. In the last century, the number of wells dug was dramatically reduced because of modern water infrastructure of cities, but 2000 years ago and also before Christ\u2019s time, wells were places physically and socially important for people\u2019s daily lives. Wells were not only places to get drinkable water, but also places for important conversations.
\nIn the New Testament age, women were almost always responsible for getting water from wells. Therefore, in John Chapter 4, during daytime, when the Samaritan woman met with the male individual, Jesus, it was a strange thing. The woman who was five-times divorced did not want to visit the well during daytime because she did not want to see other women. If she went in the morning, other people might make mean comments about her five divorces. From the Biblical story, mentioned in John Chapter 4, something similar to Idobata Kaigi was happening at that time.
\nNow, let\u2019s think about the conversation between two women, Mary and Elizabeth, today\u2019s good news given to us. A few verses before what I read, Mary listened to the Angel Gabriel. The Angel told Mary that even though she was unmarried, she would become pregnant and give a birth to the Son of God. Mary was puzzled and pondered what the angel\u2019s words meant. She might have thought that she would be killed because people could assume that she had an inappropriate relationship with a man rather than remain chaste for her fianc\u00e9 Joseph. On the other hand, she might have thought that she won the most valuable lottery in the world.
\nThen Mary decided to visit Elizabeth who was pregnant despite being told she unable to conceive. Elizabeth was married but was over 55 years old and it was impossible for her to get pregnant. But the Angel Gabriel said, \u201cNo word from God will ever fail\u201d and this encouraged Mary tremendously.
\nIn these circumstances, Mary visited Elizabeth for about three months. Considering that time period, the women most likely visited a nearby well together. They might have chatted beside the well, but their conversation was not like the ones normally associated with Idobata Kaigi.
\nElizabeth did not say, \u201cWhy are you pregnant, Mary, what really happened to you?\u201d or say anything mean to her, or feel any jealousy because Mary was pregnant so young and give birth to the Son of God.
\nWhen Elizabeth listened to what Mary said, Elizabeth\u2019s baby jumped in her womb and she was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice, she screamed \u201cBlessed are you among women.\u201d (Verse 41) Then \u201cBlessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her.\u201d (Verse 45).
\nThe Bible is informing us that both Elizabeth and Mary believed what God told and promised them through Gabriel and shared with each other what was truly happening to them. They shared things with each other, during that three months, while living together and visiting a nearby well. I think this sharing is the root of believers\u2019 conversations happening in the Christian Church.
\nThe Gospel text given to us today is strongly related to our lives in our church. Like we need water in our physical lives, we need the living water, the root of our spiritual lives, to maintain emotional and mental wellbeing. Therefore, we come to this sanctuary where abundant words of God, the living water, flow.
\nWe gather for the worship service and listen to the word of God then we share with each other about how God is working in our lives. These listening and sharing occasions encourage us enormously to live a new week with hope and joy even if during the past week we might have experienced tough or shameful things.
\nToday each one of you came to this sanctuary where the living water abundantly flows. You listened to the word of God which is the promise of the Lord, and you are filled with the Holy Spirit whether you believe it or not. This week, we celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas, please consider what Christmas means to you and what God wants to realize in you. And please share these realizations with your brothers and sisters. Amen.

We pray that my meditation and spoken words are filled with the Holy Spirit and guided by your will. In Jesus\u2019 name we pray, Amen. There is a phrase \u201cIdobata Kaigi\u201d which literally means \u201cA meeting beside a well\u201d or \u201cChatting beside a well.\u201d However, for Japanese people, what impression do you have about \u201cIdobata Kaigi?\u201d Most probably, you have a negative impression about this phrase. Historically, women gathered around a well and chattied with each other for many minutes\u2026or even sometimes for hours. The conversation could become \u201cgossip\u201d or sometimes they criticized each other. Therefore, \u201cIdobata Kaigi\u201d is translated as gossiping in English. However, is it always a bad thing for people, or women, to chat or speak with each other beside a figurative well? Are those conversations most often about negative matters?…or can they be positive? At Resurrection Lutheran Church, Japanese ministry, we have more women than men. And many women chat with each other before and after worship. I know that there are several people who confessed that they repent about inappropriate comments in the past and wish they could take them back. I think there are many good conversations though, too.
