I would like to begin today\u2019s message with my confession as a parent\u2026my wife loves skiing and I also love skiing, especially experiencing nature while skiing down snowy mountains. Therefore, when we got married, even though we were blessed with 3 children, we often went skiing, as a family, regardless of whether or not our kids wanted to go skiing.
\nThink about going skiing with a 7, 5, and 3 year old children\u2026the reality is it not possible without help. Since Satoko\u2019s parents were still relatively young, around 60 years old at the time, they helped us greatly. One day, using Satoko\u2019s father\u2019s 8 passenger van, Satoko and I and our three children went skiing with her parents.
\nWe came back late at night after 11 p.m. That night, we decided to sleep at the in-law\u2019s. I was driving the van and parked in the garage next to the house. The adults and children exited the car, entered the house, and everyone immediately went to bed.
\nThe next day, very early in the morning, like 3:30 a.m., there was a loud knocking at the front door. Both Satoko and I got up and went to the door. Then I heard Kan\u2019s voice. I believe you can imagine how we felt as parents. As soon as I opened the door, he jumped into the house, went to bed immediately and slept soundly.
\nOne winter night in Tokyo, even though Kan was sleeping on the third row seat of the van, I left him there. Obviously, all other exhausted family members went inside without checking on Kan.<\/p>\n

In the good news given today, Jesus and his parents, many relatives and friends went to Jerusalem for the festival of Passover every year. The distance between their home town, Nazareth and Jerusalem, was over 80 miles. Therefore, it took several days to travel there.
\nWhen Jesus was 12 years old, and still legally a child, the family left Jerusalem after Passover. Joseph and Mary thought that their son, Jesus, was with them and went a day\u2019s journey. However Jesus was not with them.
\nPeople might think what kind of family is this? What kind of parents leave their son somewhere and travel a full day without him? In the Catholic church, today is observed as \u201cHoly Family\u201d Day. You might think why is this family considered the \u201cHoly Family?\u201d
\nIn the latter half of the Gospel today, it is described that Jesus\u2019 parents decided go back to Jerusalem. However, they could not find him on the way back, and I can imagine how they were seriously concerned. <\/p>\n

Then on the third day, after they left, they found him having conversations with Jewish scholars in the temple. Mary said to Jesus, \u201cChild, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.\u201d
\nIn response, Jesus did not say, \u201cWhy did you leave me and travel for three days?\u201d and he did not criticize them. But he said, \u201cWhy were you searching for me?\u201d Then it is translated in English, \u201cI must be in the Father\u2019s House.\u201d
\nThe word translated \u201cmust\u201d in English is originally \u201cdei\u201d in Greek. This is the word used when Jesus foretold his suffering, death, and resurrection in Luke 22:49. I believe this word expresses the intention of God, and most likely Jesus was indicating, of course this was not our fault but that was God\u2019s plan.
\nThe Gospel is about the story of Joseph\u2019s family and during a three day period. It might be interpreted earlier that this happened because of Joseph and Mary\u2019s carelessness. Or, it has aspects of youthful rebelliousness and parent-child relationship tensions that most, if not all, families experience.<\/p>\n

When I think about the theme of the Holy Family, the Bible is teaching us that no family is perfect, or every family has many issues in their real lives. However, I think that the message in the Christmas season is that the holy child came down to earth and he became a member of every family.
\nChristmas Eve and Christmas Day were celebrated last week, and we entered into the week of New Year’s\u2019 Eve and January 1st. There are many people who get together with their families this season, but at the same time, I understand that there are many people who cannot be with his or her family members during this season. Either way, this week, this is a great time to think about the \u201cHoly Family.\u201d If you are able to believe that Jesus, Son of God, came to all the families and that none of them are perfect, then you are a member of the \u201cHoly Family.\u201d Amen.
