In the Church calendar, December 25th is Christmas, and until January 5th, it is called Christmas Season. Then January 6th is the Epiphany. From Epiphany until one day before Lent, it is called Epiphany Season. Since January 6th is on a weekday, we observe and celebrate the Epiphany today.
\nPeople might think what\u2019s the difference between Christmas and the Epiphany? Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ. The word Epiphany has Greek origins and it can be translated Manifestation or Striking Appearance.
\nThe fact that Jesus was born in a barn and placed in a manger in and of itself striking, but I think there is another more striking thing that is included in the story of Jesus Christ\u2019s birth. It is written in Matthew Chapter 2:1-12. Wise, gentile men in the East, noticed the birth of the King of Judea and came to Bethlehem to worship Jesus.
\nOne of the aspects in the Epiphany of Jesus Christ is that he was born not only to the Jews but also for the Gentiles. Therefore, the Christian Church is open to all people regardless their race, class, gender, or age. It welcomes every individual. The appearance of Jesus Christ to this world at that time is striking. I strongly believe it\u2019s Jesus\u2019 intention that whatever the language is, for example at LCR, both Anglo and Japanese worship at this same sanctuary. <\/p>\n

Since we celebrate the Epiphany today, you might wonder what we should call the season between today and January 6th? Whether we call it Christmas Season or Epiphany Season, I would like to think about God\u2019s will and why God became a human being. I would like to talk about God\u2019s sincerity in this message by discussing the next parable.
\nThere was a violent storm outside. One gentleman was looking at the storm from a window. A small river, in normal weather, became a very muddy, violent stream. There was a flock of ducks on the other side of the stream. They could not swim across because the stream\u2019s current was so severe. The other side was almost flooded and they were in great danger. They knew that if they could go to the other side, it would be safe, but they could not do so.
\nThey were obviously stuck. There was a bridge if you could move towards the upper stream a couple of thousand feet, but they did not know whether or not there was a bridge, \u3000\u3000\u3000since then did not have to travel far in the past. Then the gentleman thought even if he could go there, he knew they would be scared, but if he could be a duck, he could lead the flock and bring them to the safe place by crossing the bridge. <\/p>\n

Again, this is the parable. Here, I would like to set aside this story and to talk about the Gospel given today. The Gospel of John was probably written in AD 90; at that time the persecution of Christians was very severe.
\n When John started writing very carefully, specifically choosing words which means he was not being literal in the beginning, like Jesus. Although I only read the 10th through 18th verses, if we read from the first verse through 3rd verse, it is written, \u201cIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.\u201d
\nIn the portions I read \u201cWord\u201d can be replaced by \u201cJesus\u201d, and if I change them, it is much more understandable. Let me read the first three verses replacing \u201cWord\u201d with \u201cJesus.\u201d \u201cIn the beginning was Jesus, and he was with God, and Jesus was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Jesus, and without him not one thing came into being. <\/p>\n

Further, among the verses in the today\u2019s Gospel, in the 14th verse it says, \u201cAnd the Word became flesh and lived among us\u2026\u201d but replacing Word with Jesus again, this sentence becomes \u201cAnd Jesus became flesh and lived among us.\u201d
\nWhat John was proclaiming through the first chapter and the rest of his Gospel is summarized below: Everything came into being by Jesus who is God. God loves the people since he created all, but people did not know Jesus and they acted by themselves and did not do appropriate things. God had been very patient so many years, ages to ages, but finally, Jesus became a human being, because God loves the world, human beings so much. And Jesus showed God\u2019s love and mercy to human beings through Jesus\u2019 forgiveness and peace to all when he was crucified, died, and resurrected. <\/p>\n

I talked about the parable of ducks. Ducks were humans, who could not live by themselves in such a violent storm. The gentleman who was watching the ducks from the window was God, who was Jesus and gave all human beings our lives. Then the gentleman became a duck, which means, God became a person, and has been leading the whole world.
\nJesus is God and makes all things into being. Therefore, the Love of Jesus is not an abstract concept, but the love like a parent loves his or her own children. This love comes from God\u2019s deep grace and mercy toward his creations. Whatever the child\u2019s skin color, whatever culture he or she was born into, whatever that child\u2019s social class, God\u2019s mercy is poured into all human beings.
\nGod\u2019 true sincerity, his Grace, Truth, and Mercy is revealed by Jesus Christ, God, and the Holy Spirit, who lives among us and within us. No matter our social standing, God\u2019s Love is for all and we\u2019re truly blessed because of it. Amen.

People might think what\u2019s the difference between Christmas and the Epiphany? Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ. The word Epiphany has Greek origins and it can be translated Manifestation or Striking Appearance. The fact that Jesus was born in a barn and placed in a manger in and of itself striking, but I think there is another more striking thing that is included in the story of Jesus Christ\u2019s birth. It is written in Matthew Chapter 2:1-12. Wise, gentile men in the East, noticed the birth of the King of Judea and came to Bethlehem to worship Jesus. One of the aspects in the Epiphany of Jesus Christ is that he was born not only to the Jews but also for the Gentiles. Therefore, the Christian Church is open to all people regardless their race, class, gender, or age. It welcomes every individual.
