May the Word together with the Holy Spirit be poured into the hearts of the people in this sanctuary!<\/p>\n

The title of today\u2019s message is \u201cToday Fulfilled.\u201d What does \u201cToday\u201d mean? Is it just 24 hours after 12 a.m. midnight until 11:59 p.m.?
\nIn Japanese, there is a phrase \u201cToday I am here is because of you.\u201d In this case today doesn\u2019t mean just the 24 hours of that day. Even in English, we can interpret today as \u201cthis age\u201d or current time period\u2026it does not necessarily mean a 24 hour period.
\nLet me further explain, the New Testament was written about 2000 years ago\u2026 This is of course a much longer time period compared to our average earthly lifespan of about 80 years. However, from eternal God, the Bible says 1000 years is like a day\u2026 or considering the Earth was created 5 billion years ago. 2000 years is almost just one second compared to that lengthy timespan. <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s dive into the Gospel text today and let me give you some background detail. According to Luke, after Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, he was in the wilderness for 40 days and was tested by the evil one during that period. Although this is a little bit off track, but Jesus did not mission right after he was baptized. In our faith community, there are some people who happen to take time \u2013 not only 40 days but even 40 years \u2013 before beginning missional work after his or her baptism.
\nAfter the tests, Jesus came to the area called Galilee spreading across the western side of the Lake Galilee. I believe the size of Galilee was about a little bit less than Orange County. He visited Jewish synagogues and spread the Gospel.
\nHe came to a synagogue in Nazareth in Galilee where he grew up and worshiped with the people in his home town. By the way, our current Christian worship is similar to Jewish tradition since Jesus was born to the Jewish community. In Jewish tradition, there is a time to read the Bible. On that day, Jesus stood up together with the power of the Holy Spirit and was given the scroll of Isaiah. <\/p>\n

His eyes stopped on the place where it starts with \u201cThe Spirit of the Lord is upon me\u201d which is Isaiah Chapter 61 verse 1 in our current Bible. And he continued, something like this: \u201cbecause he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord\u2019s favor.\u201d
\nAfter he read this, he sat down once. but He was full of the Holy Spirit and people watched him. Then, like a preacher, who talks in our worship service, Jesus said, \u201cToday this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n

When we reflect upon this situation that happened, Jewish community discussed Isaiah from BC 600 years. Then maybe AD 30 or so, Jesus added His words, as the new promise, the New Testament, to the words of the prophet Isaiah. Again the words Jesus said were \u201cToday this scripture has been fulfilled when you heard this.\u201d The Christian church has been proclaiming these words of Jesus again and again for the last 2000 years. This is an amazing thing.
\nWe are listening to the same words here in this Sanctuary. For the listeners in this sanctuary His words are also fulfilled \u201ctoday\u201d (i.e. now) strengthened by the Holy Spirit. However are we truly intentionally listening to the Word of God? Are we truly accepting the work of the Holy Spirit and listening to the Word of God?
\nBecause of the Holy Spirit that some people accepted 2000 years ago, they remembered His Word and wrote it down as the New Testament. At that time there was no laser printing technology or internet, but Christian Church has been proclaiming the same words again and again for the last 2000 years. Do you think it is a miracle, only accomplished by the work of the Lord?
\nThe words we listened to today are not the only words spoken 2000 years ago; the words have the same meaning today also because Jesus came to this world and the Holy Spirit is still working in us. Even when we experience challenges and difficulties in this age, at the same time, today, we are freed in our hearing of the Word of Christ, the Savior and the Lord.
\nMy prayer today is that each one of us accept the power of the Holy Spirit and read the scripture as daily bread that changes us today, so that we continue being freed from difficulties. This allows us to openly and joyously share Christ’s Love that continuously informs and shapes our lives. Amen.

The title of today\u2019s message is \u201cToday Fulfilled.\u201d What does \u201cToday\u201d mean? Is it just 24 hours after 12 a.m. midnight until 11:59 p.m.? In Japanese, there is a phrase \u201cToday I am here is because of you.\u201d In this case today doesn\u2019t mean just the 24 hours of that day. Even in English, we can interpret today as \u201cthis age\u201d or current time period\u2026it does not necessarily mean a 24 hour period. Let me further explain, the New Testament was written about 2000 years ago\u2026 This is of course a much longer time period compared to our average earthly lifespan of about 80 years.
