The Effects of Stephen
\nActs 6:1-7 and John 14:12-18<\/strong>
\nMay Grace and Peace of Jesus Christ be poured into the hearts of the people gathered in this sanctuary!
\nAs it was announced in the Temple Talk in January, our congregation is now registered as a Stephen Ministry Congregation affirmed by Church Council, Mission Endowment Fund Committee, and of course supported by Pastor Carl and I. A few weeks ago, Kathy McGriff and I attended the Stephen Ministry Leadership training. I would like to touch on that experience later in this message.
\nDo you remember what caused you to come to church for the first time? Of course, whatever the reason, I believe that the Holy Spirit brought you to a sanctuary, but if you look back at the details, there must be many unique individual stories. For example, some kids are lead to come to church as part of the family and that naturally grows into a conscious decision to continue coming to church.
\nBut I know, without a doubt, that there are people who came to church for the first time with heavy burdens; They might have no idea what would come of tomorrow due to a financial crisis, sudden unemployment, divorce, his\/her chronic disease, a death of a loved one, etc. Such stories also exist in the Bible, where people looked to Jesus Christ when faced with a crisis.
\nHere in this congregation, we are almost always praying for those in our congregation who may be going through tough times and carrying heavy burdens themselves. In addition, Pastor Carl and I have been trying to welcome and chat with our first-time visitors if possible… it is not very rare to find folks who come to Resurrection for the first time with a heavy burden.
\nLet\u2019s dive into the lesson for today, Acts chapter 6. If you read the first verse, we notice that in the first century Christian church, there were complaints. How might this be similar or unlike our churches today? In this instance, the word \u201ccomplaints\u201d could reasonably be translated to representing many feelings, such as dissatisfaction, worrisome, pain, grief, etc. I believe that not much has changed in this regard in the modern day; If you know of a congregation that does not hear the complaints of the congregation, I would like to know.
\nIn the case of Acts Chapter 6, the source of these complaints was from widows of Greek-speaking Jews against Hebrew-speaking Jews. In the historical context, the widows were in the weak situation in the society, and of course, they were feeling pain and grief due to the deaths of their spouses.
\nThe twelve apostles took the complaints very seriously. They gathered all the believers and discussed.
\nAlthough the scripture mentions that the Apostles needed to spread the word of God instead of \u201crunning a food program\u201d, the Apostle were aware that the needs of their people had to be addressed. They realized that the function of their church was not only to proclaim the gospel, but to care for those that are suffering, hurting, or are discontent. Therefore, they went ahead to select seven well-respected men who were filled with the Spirit and wisdom.
\nThey were: Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas. These services went well beyond simply distributing the food fairly among the people, rather they dealt with listening to widows\u2019 feelings, discomfort, grief, worries, and so on. As a result, the number of disciples increased even more and some Jewish priests ultimately converted to Christianity.
\nThere was a Lutheran pastor and a seminary teacher in St. Louis by the name of Rev. Dr. Kenneth Haugk. He focused on the story of Acts 6, and his example shows how this Bible lesson can be applied to modern congregations. In the middle of the 1970s, Pastor Kenneth was surrounded by 17 people who needed pastoral care.
\nHe visited each one of them and upon reflecting on those 17 visits, he had no idea whether the quality of care he provided was good or not. Then, he taught the basics of spiritual care for 9 lay men and women in his congregation to regularly visit people who needed care. Pastor Kenneth appropriately named the students \u201cStephen Ministers\u201d. After he assigned each of them to a care receiver, he was impressed by the care they provided\u2014and the joy they discovered as they saw Christ working through them to bring hope and healing to another person.
\nThis was the beginning of the Stephen Ministry. A few years later, he started a program in which he taught members of other churches to become Stephen Ministry Leaders; A role designated for training members of their congregation to become Stephen Ministers. Today, over 12,000 congregations combined from the US, Canada, and various other countries participate as a Stephen Ministry Congregation. I also discovered that hundreds of Roman Catholic congregations are also implementing Stephen Ministries as well.
\nStephen Ministers are often called \u201cQuiet Heroes\u201d or \u201cSecret Saints\u201d because those who are in need of care, why they need the care, and which minister attends to them is confidential. However, the number of trained Stephen Ministers is known to be over 600,000 people in the last 40 years and the number of people who have received care is more than 1.5 million.
\nThroughout life, we will encounter shocking situations like the death of a loved one, financial crisis, unemployment, and so on. Suddenly, one may face a situation in which all hope is lost and no light is seen at the end of the tunnel. As a Christian Congregation, it is God\u2019s call to respond to such circumstances with Christ\u2019s love and mercy, not only for the members of churches, but also for people in neighboring communities.
\nThis is a ministry that provides Christ\u2019s care for people through people. It certainly is not easy to participate in this ministry due to the fact that Stephen Ministers are trained 50 hours at first, contribute four hours a month (an hour a week) to meet with and actively listen to a care receiver\u2019s feelings and emotions, and also meet with other Stephen Ministers for 5 hours a month (2.5 hours each, twice a month), for continuing education and peer reviews. It is a substantial commitment.
\nWhile there are many of us who currently don\u2019t have the means to become a Stephen Minister, there is no doubt that there are many gifted people in this congregation who could become Stephen Ministers. I would also like to point out that the Stephen Ministry is not a one-man show by any means; It is a team effort between Stephen Ministry Leaders and Ministers working together with pastors\u2019 affirmation and congregational support. In other words, even if one cannot be a Stephen Minister, they can help the ministry by actively participating as a Stephen Ministry Leader.
\nHowever, the crucial point is that this congregation may serve by providing Christ\u2019s care to people through people and remembering the promise of Jesus Christ. Jesus is always among us and within us.
