気を落とさずに祈り続ける ルカ 18: 1-8 主イエスキリストの恵みと平安が集まりました会衆の上に豊かに注がれますように。！
牧師になるための教育の一環で、チャプレンとして病院勤務をしていた。 癌病棟に配属され、病室を回っていた。ある病室に入ろうとしたとき、患者の家族に入って行くのを阻止された。
患者の娘さんだとわかったが、彼女いわく、縁起が悪いので入ってこないで欲しいとのこと。 つまり、私の存在は、亡くなってから葬儀をしたりするための人間であり、まだ来て欲しくないとのことだった。
キリスト教では、この世の命が肉体的には終わろうが、永遠の命が与えられており、希望がある。永遠に神とともに生きることができる。 だから、私のチャプレンとしての存在は、臨終後のためだけにあるのではなく、永遠の命への希望を持っていただくためにあることを語りたかった。
しかし、病院は公共の場であり、さまざまな宗教の方がおられ、宗教者の役割や、死後のことについて様々な考え方があり、それぞれ尊重する必要があった。 そして、私は彼女の考え方を聞き、がっかりしたものの、「わかりました。もしお母さんが私に入って来て欲しくないということなら、私は病室には入りません。ただあなたのお母様のことを祈りに覚えます。」と言い、その場は引き下がり、次の病室へと向かった。
今日の聖書の話、かなりユニークな譬え話だと思う。イエスは弟子たちに、気を落とさずに祈ることの大切さを教えるために、本当に突拍子もない譬え話をしている。夫を亡くした女性と不当な裁判官が出てくる。裁判官は人を人ともおもわず、また神をも畏れない人間だった。 そのような人が担当の裁判官になってしまった未亡人。しかし、彼女はしつこく、裁判官を訪問し、裁いてもらうようにお願いする。結果、裁判官は彼女の言うなりになってしまう。 ここで、不当な裁判官とやもめの関係が、主なる神と弟子たちの関係にあたる。 イエスは本当に大切さを教えるために、それは突拍子もない譬え話をすることがある。今日の譬え話は一つの例にすぎない。 不正をするマネージャーが神からほめられるという譬え話もあったりする。
そのような譬え話に、しばしば、私たちは混乱してしまうもとである。しかし、そのような話は記憶に残る。弟子たちに本当に祈りの大切さを覚えてもらうために、イエスは主なる神の考えとしては、ちょっと常識で考えにくい話をしたように思う。 譬えに出てきている不当な裁判官に出会ったら、普通だったらあきらめてしまいそうないやな裁判官だ。にもかかわらず、つまり裁判官にとりあってもらえそうにんないのに、未亡人はあきらめずに、裁判官に裁いてもらうように何度もしつこく迫る。この譬え話では、いってみれば、やもめが弟子たちであり、不当な裁判官が、私たちの主、神、を顕しており、何度も言うようだが、ほんとうに突拍子もない話。ここでイエスが教えたいことのポイントは、祈りが聞いてもらえそうにないように感じてしまう、どうしようもないと思えるような場合でも、あきらめずに祈ること。
9.11の当日、がれきの山の下敷きになってしまった二人の警察官がいた。 みなさんの中にWorld Trade Centerという映画を見た方もいるかもしれないが、それは実話に基づいている話。 瓦礫の下敷きになっている中で、身動きはとれず、真っ暗で、どうにもならない状況に置かれる。 しかし、二人は会話することができた。そして、主の祈りを唱える。結果、二人は見つけ出され助け出される。どうにもならない状況は、身動きがとれなくなった時だけではなく、人生のいろいろな場面で訪れることがある。
しかし、希望を持って祈る、どんな状況にあろうが、失望せずに祈り、神との関係を継続することが大切。
冒頭に話した、病院での出来事、私はその患者さんの部屋から引き下がった。 しかし、その患者の娘さんには、「お母さんのことを祈る。」ということを告げた。
実は、その翌日、その病室の前を通りかかったとき、ドアが開いていて、娘さんが出てきて話しかけてきた。「母があなたに会いたがっているので、入っていっしょに祈ってください。」 その前日、彼女たちのことを祈ることによって、聖霊が働き、母と娘に心境の変化を及ぼしてくださったと思い感謝した。
がっかりしたようなことがあっても、本日のたとえ話のしつこい未亡人ように、気を落とさずに、祈ろう。 祈りは、どこにいても、なにかをやりながらも、逆に何もできない身動きがとれないときも祈ることはでき、神と対話する最高の手段。祈りによる神との関係を保つ生活をしよう。アーメン
Don’t Be Discouraged; Continue Praying Luke 18: 1-8
May the Grace and Peace of Jesus Christ be richly poured into this sanctuary!
While I was in training for clinical pastoral care at a hospital, I was visiting patient’s rooms one by one where most of them were cancer patients. As I was entering a patient’s room, saying I am a chaplain, that patient’s daughter stopped me and brought me outside of the room.
According to her, my presence was ill-omened for her mother. In other words, her family thought that religious people’s primary function is to prepare for funerals and officiate burial services after patients died. Therefore, she did not want me to come into the room.
My belief in Jesus Christ is that no matter how patients died physically, God gives people eternal life with Christ in heaven and because of this there is hope. Therefore, I wanted to explain that my presence is for the hope of one’s eternal life, living with God, and is not only for dealing with issues after physical death.
However, the hospital is a public place and chaplains serve not only Christians but people of other faiths as well. People have different perspectives on religion and chaplains must be mindful of that fact. Therefore, I did not defend myself to her and I just said, “I understand, if she does not want me to come in, that is fine. She is in my prayers.” And I excused myself to the next room.
I think, today’s parable is unique. Jesus is telling his disciples a very strange story in order to teach them the need to pray always and not to be discouraged.
In the parable, there is a widow and a judge. The judge neither feared God nor cared about people, but the widow kept coming to him and asked “Grant me justice in this dispute with my opponent.”
As a result of the widow’s relentlessness, the judge changed his mind, favored her, and granted her petition. When I think about the relationship between the unjust judge and the widow, that is the relationship between the Lord and his disciples.
Jesus shared astounding parables which allowed him to highlight and teach important concepts. Today’s parable is one of those examples. Another famous one is about the dishonest manager that God praises. Sometimes these parables are confusing but they’re always memorable. In today’s story, I think that, because Jesus wanted to teach about the importance of regular prayer, Jesus used a strange parable to make his point and make the lesson unforgettable.
If people met an unjust judge, a petitioner might be discouraged and give up. However, in this story, even though the judge was uncaring and would not grant the widow’s petition, the widow was persistent and kept asking the judge for justice.
In this parable, the widow represents the disciples and the unjust judge represents our Lord, God, again this is an astounding representation. The point Jesus wanted to teach disciples is that even though you might feel that the Lord does not listen to you, you should not be discouraged and continue praying. Like the widow you should be relentless in your faith.
On 9/11, there were two policemen under a tremendous heap of rubble. Some of you might have seen the movie, World Trade Center…they could not move their bodies and were in a seemingly hopeless situation.
However, they could talk to each other and they prayed the Lord’s Prayer. As a result, on the next day, September 12th, a rescue team found them and they survived their ordeal. In our lives, we may also experience a seemingly hopeless situation, not necessarily physically taxing but perhaps it’s mentally, emotionally, or spiritually taxing, but it is so important to have hope in Christ and to have relationship with God through prayers even in the midst of difficult situations.
Following the conversation I had with that patient’s daughter that I mentioned in the beginning of this message, this is what happened on the next day. I was going to pass by that room, however, the daughter found me and spoke to me.
She said, “Please come in and meet with my mother. For some reason she wanted to meet with you.” On the previous day, I left her mother’s room saying, “She is in my prayers.” And I prayed for her to myself. To be honest, I did not expect that I would be asked to come back into her room.
However, God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit worked on the patient’s and her daughter’s hearts and their mind’s were changed. The patient was very glad to see me and together with her daughter, I prayed for hope in His Holy Name even in the midst of a particularly difficult chemo treatment. I am sure that no matter what happened in her physical life, she would live with the Holy One.
Each one of us through continuous prayer can keep a strong the relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ, our Savior. Even when all seems hopeless, be like the persistent widow…God hears you. Thanks be to God! Amen.
