ヨハネによる福音書第１２章１－８節 John 12:1-8
救い主イエス・キリストの恵みと平安が、この会衆一同の上に豊かに注がれますように！
聖壇にきれいな花を時々飾る。。それは、本当にお花を生けたくてしょうがないというお気持ちの方々がいて、通常献金している上に、さらにお花代を捧げている。例えば２週間後のイースターでは聖壇の上は、ゆりの花でいっぱいになる。
なんで、そんなにこの聖壇にお花を捧げたいという気持ちになるのだろう？ ただ、礼拝を美しくしたいから、、、？ でもこの聖壇はいったい何なんだろう？
私たちが聖餐式のなかで、主イエス・キリストの体と血をいただく場所を聖壇と呼んでいる。そして、この聖壇の真ん中に、コミュニオンテーブル（聖体拝領台）と呼ばれるものがある。 一部の建築家たちは、テーブルをイエス・キリストの棺の形に似せて設計する。
少しお分かりいただけただろうか。 なぜ高級な御花をこの聖壇に生けたいと思うか。 葬儀において、棺の周りにきれいな花を生けたいと思うのは、とても自然な思い。 特に日本の文化ではそういうことはある。しかし、この世の通常の葬儀であれば、御花は亡くなった方を思い、悲しい思いの中で捧げる。 しかし、イエスに捧げるのは、少々違っていて、死から復活するイエスなので喜びをもって捧げている。
今日与えられた福音書の内容を見ていこう。 イエスが十字架に架かる数日前、ベタニアという町のマルタの家に人々が集まっている。イエス、ラザロ、マルタ、マリア、それに弟子たちもいた。 ラザロというのは誰だったか覚えているだろうか？ 死んで４日も経ち、お墓に入っていたのにイエスが蘇らせた人。そして、マルタとマリアはその姉さんたち。 だから、３人の姉妹と弟にとって、イエスはまさに救い主であり、イエスにとても感謝していた。
そして、マルタは例によってすばらしい食事を用意した。またマリアは、一年分の給与（一日一万円の日当として300万円？）もするような高価な香油をイエスの足に塗り、部屋中がとても良い香りになった。 マリアも救い主イエスにこの上なく感謝していた。 この香油は、マルタ、マリア、ラザロにとって家宝のようなものだったのではないかと思う。 しかし、マリアがそのようなことをしても、マルタもラザロも全然文句を言うことなく、それを見守った。 ただ、ユダは、そんなことをしてもったいないとは言ったが。 ユダの話は今日は、フォーカスではないので、またいつかお話することにしたい。
この礼拝堂において、この話を聞いている我々にとって、今日の福音書箇所はいったいどういう意味を持っているのだろうか？ この礼拝堂にも、イエス、ラザロ、マルタ、そしてマリアがいるのではないだろうか？ わたしは、いると思う。 今日の話と似たようなことが礼拝堂でおこっている。 ラザロという名前の意味は、「神が助ける。」 ここに集まっている私たち一人一人、実は、ラザロだと思う。 どうか一人一人のこれまでの人生を振り返って欲しい。勿論、 いろいろな人生の過程は異なっているが、みんな、洗礼を受けるまでの過程にしたって、洗礼を受けてからもそうだと思うが、どれだけ神が助けていることだろうか。どれだけ、神なるイエスの聖霊が働いて、豊かな祝福をいただいたことだろう。大変な苦労をしたときも、近くで歩いていてくださり、わたしたちの我儘かって、あるいは、失敗をしたときも赦してくださり、今日このように、神の慈しみをもって、この礼拝堂に招いてくださっている。 また、いまも、この場にイエス・キリストの聖霊が存在してくださっている。
一人一人が、それに気づいていても、気づいていなくても、また好むと好まざるにかかわらず、それを信じようが信じまいが、父なる神、子なるキリスト、そして聖霊と一体なる三位一体のお方が、おひとりおひとりの人生を、特に洗礼を受けてから、大きく変革している。 わたしたちは、イエス・キリストから、たいへんな恵みを受けている。 その恵みに応答して、神様からいただいている賜物の一部を喜んで、神、つまりイエスの体である教会に、捧げている。 教会が必要だから献金を捧げると言うより、まず、私たち自身に、神の恵みに応答して捧げる必要がある。
ところで、礼拝の中では、奉献は聖餐式の前に捧げている。 マリアが家族を代表して、高価な香油をイエスが十字架に架かる数日前、イエスに捧げたように、この礼拝堂のなかでも、最後の晩餐の前に、会堂に集まった人々の高価な献金を集めて捧げるという事が起こっている。 だから献金の奉仕をしてくださる方は、マリアではないだろうか。 また、聖餐式の準備をしてくださっている方は、マルタ役をしてくださっているように思う。
そして、みなさんご承知のように、イエスは最後の晩餐の翌日、十字架に架かるが、イエスの生涯は死では終わらない。 復活し、十字架の死をもって、死を滅ぼした。 イエスが復活するように、私たちも、イエスの体と血をいただくとき、そのイエスの恵みによって、私たちは新たに生かされ、そして、この礼拝堂から大きな喜びを持って、一週間の世の闘いに送り出される。 そしてまた一週間後の聖日に、礼拝に来て、過去の行いや言動について悔い改めの祈りをして、賛美し、神の言葉を聞き、わたしたちの賜物をささげ、そして、聖餐に授かるという行為は、いうなれば、信仰訓練。 その信仰訓練を繰り返す中に、神が私たちを世の中に奉仕させ、神様からの賜物の一部をまたお返しする、つまり大きな喜びを持って捧げる存在にしてくださる。

Grace and Peace to you in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ!
We sometimes put beautiful flowers on the altar. There are some people who in addition to giving a gracious monetary offering, wish to give flowers as well. Why do these people want to place flowers on the altar? What do the flowers symbolize?
Whether it’s monetary or floral; they seem compelled to give. Whether or not they recognize the meaning of their offering, I believe the offering of financial gifts and flowers are both a joyful response to God’s bountiful mercy and grace.
As you well know, the place where we receive the sacrament is called the altar. In the center of the altar, there is a communion table. But did you know that some architects design this table in the shape of Jesus’ coffin?
So when viewed in this context, we can begin to understand why people would want to place expensive flowers on the altar. During funerals, especially in Japanese culture, it is very common to decorate the coffin with very beautiful flowers. Normally because of someone’s death, we offer flowers to pay our respects and express grief. However, Jesus’ case is quite different because he is raised from the dead – a joyful occurrence.
Let’s look at the text today. People gathered to eat dinner. There was Jesus, Lazarus, Martha, Mary and several more people. Remember Lazarus? He was dead and in the grave for almost four days when Jesus raised him from the dead. So, when Jesus came to where his disciples were, they were very thankful. Martha prepared a wonderful meal for Jesus, to celebrate what he had done.
And Mary put very expensive perfume on Jesus’ feet. The value of the perfume (i.e. nard) was almost $30,000 per ounce, about a year’s wages in biblical times. Mary expressed thankfulness to Jesus Christ, the Savior, by perfuming his feet and wiping his feet with her hair…an act of humility.
Because the oil was so expensive, I feel the perfume belonged to Lazarus’ family. Of course Mary understood that the perfume ultimately belonged to God, so on behalf of the family, Mary perfumed Jesus’ feet and other family members were fine with this since the Lazarus’ life was restored. Only Judas Iscariot objected to perfuming Jesus’ feet.
What does this story mean in relation to the sanctuary? Are Lazarus, Martha, and Mary present in the sanctuary? Yes…as are all people who give thanks to God for His son Jesus Christ.
The meaning of Lazarus in Greek is “God helped.” I believe each one of us here is a Lazarus. Please think about your lives so far, how much has God helped each one of you? To those of you who’ve been baptized…please recall how God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit has transformed you, been gracious to you, cleansed your shame, forgiven your sins, and refreshed your lives.
Whether or not you’ve noticed or truly believed it, your lives were greatly different before you were baptized in the name of the Father-God, the Son-Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. We receive so much from Christ and many of us respond joyfully to what we receive each month, each week and each moment of our lives. Everything comes from God. Most of us joyfully give back a portion to God because He has blessed us more than we could ever repay.
Why do we give offerings before communion? Like when Mary offered the valuable perfume several days before his crucifixion, someone in this sanctuary gathers valuable offerings from the congregation and puts them on the body of Jesus before communion; this represents the last supper. Also like Martha’s feast, someone in this sanctuary prepares sacraments before communion.
As you know, Jesus does not end his life in death. After the last supper, he was raised from the tomb; he overcomes death through the Crucifixion. His Passion leads to eternal life and, for this, we should be ever-grateful. Our lives are also renewed and refreshed by Jesus’ resurrection. Every time we receive Jesus’ body and blood it is my hope that we are sent from the sanctuary and into the world with a joyful and thankful heart.
The whole process of repenting our past, praising the Lord, listening to God’s Word, offering our gifts, and receiving sacraments during Sunday services are integral parts of our faith. In the midst of these practices, the Holy Spirit brings us hope and love and empowers us to serve the community and to give back joyfully – to “perfume Jesus with our thanks”.
