十字架の死と復活による完成 ヨハネ10:22-30
主イエスキリストの恵みと平安が皆様方と共に豊かにありますように！
どういう復活節の季節を送っておられるだろうか？ ここに集まっている皆さんの多くは、イースターの朝、羊の肉を食べた。 おいしかっただろうか？ それが今年はじめて、何かの意味があっただろうか？
先週はどんな週だっただろうか？ ボストンやテキサスで相次ぐ爆発が起こった。 私たちにも、なにか似たような状況に陥る可能性だってあり恐れを覚えた方もいるだろう。
今年のイースターの季節、第四日曜日を迎えた。 3月31日が復活節第一日曜。 三回のメッセージとも、なかなかイエスの復活を信じられない弟子たちの話をしてきた。 とくに先週は、３度目にイエスに出会っても、よくわからなかったペトロの話もした。
いったいイエスという方はどういう方なのか。 クリストロジーという言葉がある。 これはキリスト学、キリストはどういう存在かということを学ぶ学問。 神学校で学ぶことの大半はこの学問。 私が学んだルーテル神学大学には、そういう科目があったわけではないが、実は、歴史、神学、旧約学、さらに新約学とか、すべてが、クリストロジに直結している。 このクリストロジーを私の場合は６年もかかって学び、神の赦しと慈しみにより、牧師にさせていただいた。
しかし、いまだに、牧師になって3年たったが、いろいろな教会で説教をしているが、同じ質問を繰り返している。 というか、20年30年も牧師経験のあるビショップとの研修のときだって、いったいキリストってどういう方なのという質問を繰り返す。 日々の生活の中で、神の働きに新たに驚かされることがしょっちゅうだからだ。 そして、神の新しい創造に気づかされ、そして、新たにされて、最近はほぼ毎週日曜、あるいは指名を受けた場所と時に、神のみ言葉を述べ伝えるメッセージに取り組んでいる。
さて、今週与えられている福音書、復活後の話ではない。 十字架に架けられてしまう数週間前。ユダヤ教の指導者たちも、いったい、イエスという男は何者なのか？ という問いに悩まされていた。 ナザレで育ち、ガリラヤで数々の奇跡を起こし、ユダヤ人であろうが異邦人であろうが、病にある人々を次々に癒した。 ユダヤ教を信仰する人々は、救い主がこの世に来るということは預言されていたので、この人が救い主なのかと。 しかし、ユダヤの法律では、もし人間で自分が救い主であるという人が出ることは、それは石投げの刑で殺されてもよいことになっていた。
民衆の中には、イエスが救い主だと思う人々がたくさん現れていた。そして、ユダヤ教の指導者たちは、じれったくなってきた。 このような人間は、イスラエルのユダヤ社会にあって邪魔者で、殺してしまった方がユダヤ社会のために良い。 それには、イエス自身が、自分が救い主だ、つまり神だという発言をしてくれれば殺せるという話になってきた。
そこで、「自分が救い主ならはっきりそう言ったらどうか。」という質問を、ユダヤ教の指導者がイエスに投げかける。 イエスを死刑に導こうとして、このような事を質問されている事は、イエスは十分わかっていた。
そして、イエスは、救い主を羊飼い、人間を羊にたとえて、「たとえ私があなたがたの羊飼いだと言ったところで、あなたがたが、私を羊飼いだと思っていない人々には、何の意味も無い。しかし、私を羊飼いとして従ってきている羊たちには、わたしは永遠の命を与え、決して滅びることはなく、その羊たちを、羊飼いであるわたしから、奪うことはできない。 なぜなら、私と神はいったいだからである。」
ユダヤ人たちは、石投げの刑で、イエスを殺そうとしはじめるが、すぐにはイエスは石投げの刑では殺されることなくその場を逃れる。 結局は、その数週間後、ローマの政治家たちも参加して、十字架刑にされ、そして三日後に復活する。
今日の言葉の福音書の中で、イエス自身が、羊飼いであることが述べられ、さらに、「イエス自身が父なる神と一体。」という話がされた。 それは、すべての羊たちを導くことのできる完璧な羊飼いであることを示唆していた。永遠の命を与えることができる羊飼いであると。 たとえ、ユダヤ教の指導者やローマの政治家から殺されてしまう羊飼いであっても、それは完全なる神、完璧なる神と一体である羊飼いイエスは、羊たちとわかれてしまうことがない、羊たちを見捨ててしまうことのない羊飼いであると。
さて今日の最大のポイントは、イエスが語らてていたことからすると、十字架の死と復活は、私たちが死と復活を信じるとか、信じない問題ではなく、むしろ、イエス・キリストの死と復活は、必ず起こるということ、つまり必然だった。 イエスの語っていたことを完成させるために、さらに、旧約聖書の中にちりばめられていた数々の預言からして、イエスの十字架による死と復活は、必ず起こることだったということ。
それが、私たちの現代の生活でどういう意味を持ってくるのだろうか。三つのことをお話して、今日は終わりにしたい。
まず、一つ目、イエスキリストという方と天の父なる神との関係の完成。イエスは十字架に架かっても復活なさる方。 全く何も無いところから命を発生させることができる神は、たとえ、死に遭遇しても、その死をほろぼし、復活できる、父なる神と同等な方である。 つまりイエスキリストと神が一体であるというイエスの説明を完成させてくださった。
二つ目は、イエスと私たちの関係の完成。 私たちが羊で、イエスが羊飼いというたとえ話をしておられたが、実際、羊飼いが羊になってくださるような羊飼い。 神からついつい背き、行動すべき行動をしない私たちの現実がある。本来、殺されて、毛をむしられ、食べられてしまわなければならないような、羊の存在であるにもかかわらず、むしろ、羊飼いの方が羊になってしまわれ、私たちに永遠の命を保ってくださるため、また復活して羊飼いとなる。十字架と死と復活は、とんでもなく、羊を愛してくださっている羊飼いと羊の関係の説明をも完成させてくださった。
そして三つ目は、私たちとイエス・キリスト、さらには、神との関係が完成している中で、毎日を歩む私たちには、なんら恐れが無い。 災難や災いがおこらないということではない。 いや、むしろ、えっ、まさかというびっくりするようなことがある。 しかし、そこに、どんな状況からも復活できる、永遠の命をさずけてくださる、神と一体なるイエス・キリストという方が、私たちと共にいてくださる。先週末の詩編を読もうは23編だったが、今一度読み、ぜひ、復活のイエス、羊飼いがいっしょにいてくださる喜びを実感しよう。

How is your Easter season so far? Most of you ate Lamb on Easter morning. Did it taste good? Was it somewhat meaningful to you? Three weeks have passed since then. How was last week for you? Terrible news from Boston…were you afraid, that a similar incident would happen locally?
Today is the fourth Sunday of this Easter season. We discussed the empty tomb on Easter Sunday. The second and third Sundays, we read in the Bible how difficult it was for disciples and Jewish leaders alike to comprehend the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Understanding Christ is not an easy thing to do. Have you ever heard the term “Christology”? This is the study about who Christ is. Everything we learn in Christian seminaries is about Christology. Although the seminary I attended did not have a subject called “Christology”, whatever the subject is, like History, Theology, Old Testament, or New Testament, all subjects relate to Christology. In my case, I spent almost 6 years studying Christology during my candidacy process leading up to my ordination.
However, even though I was ordained three years ago, I still ask the same question again and again, “Who is Christ?” In my daily life, I am still surprised by God, Jesus Christ, and continue finding new aspects of him and I am renewed by him. Because of this renewal, when God asks me to proclaim and preach a new message every Sunday (or any day); I gladly do so.
The Gospel today, is not from the text after the resurrection. It was about several weeks before Jesus was crucified. At that time, Jewish leaders were also wondering who Jesus was. He was raised in Nazareth, did many miracles in Galilee and in other cities nearby including healing many sick people regardless of if they were Jews or Gentiles.
Among Jews, it was prophesized that the Messiah would come, so people wondered who he would be. However, among Jewish leaders, it was unacceptable if any human being said “I am the messiah.” If someone claimed to be the messiah, that person was sentenced to death.
Among the Jewish public, some people started saying, “Jesus must be the messiah,’ and they believed it to be true. Jewish leaders were irritated and thought that it was better if Jesus were dead and thus be easier to keep the Jewish public under control. In order for Jewish leaders to act, Jesus would have to admit, “I am the messiah” and this would be the perfect excuse for the leaders to kill him.
Therefore, the Jews said to him, “If you are the messiah, just say so plainly.” Jesus understood that this was part of their plot to sentence him to death. And Jesus replied likening the messiah and people to a shepherd and his sheep, “Even if I say I am the messiah, the shepherd, you do not think I am the messiah since you do not think I am the shepherd of you, sheep. However, I give eternal life to the sheep that follow me, they won’t perish and nobody is able to take them away from me, the Father, the messiah, because the heavenly father and I are one.”
Jewish leaders almost started throwing stones at Jesus, but it was too early for Jesus to die, and Jesus left the temple and came to Jordan River. Several weeks later, Jesus came to Jerusalem again and was sentenced to death, under Pontius Pilate, and was crucified. Three days later, as you know, the resurrection happened.
In his reply to the Jewish leaders, it was clearly mentioned that Jesus was the perfect shepherd to take care of his sheep. Jesus and the heavenly father, God, are one. In other words, Jesus was the messiah who could give eternal life to people. Even though the shepherd would be killed by Jewish religious leaders and Roman political leaders, Jesus predicted that he would be the perfect shepherd that would not fail his sheep and not forsake his sheep.
The most important point in this message is: according to what Jesus said, the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ are not a matter of whether we believe or disbelieve, but a matter of necessity. His death and resurrection are inevitable events that must occur in order for our salvation to become a reality.
What does this mean in our lives? What does the completion through the death and resurrection mean in our lives? I would like to conclude today’s message by mentioning three things:
Firstly, Jesus explained the relationship between the heavenly Father and Jesus. The death and the resurrection were the perfect incident that the heavenly Father and Jesus are one. God can create a life from nothing, and God can recreate new life even if his Son encounters death.
Secondly, Jesus explained the relationship between Jesus, the messiah, and us. Jesus likened the messiah and his people a shepherd and his sheep. That shepherd so loved his sheep that the shepherd became a sheep, too. The messiah, God, became a human being. Even though the sheep would be slaughtered and eaten, the shepherd allowed himself to be slaughtered and consumed as well.
Thirdly, upon the complete understanding of the relationships between God and Jesus and between Jesus and us, even though we walk through the dark valley of death, the shepherd will not fail us or forsake us, he is always beside us, and we will not fear. Whatever unexpected events happen to us, we will not be afraid, since the Lord, our good and perfect shepherd is ever with us. Rejoice, because Jesus’ words have come to pass!
