神の国は誰のもの？ ルカ18:15-17
主のイエス・キリストの恵みと平安が集まりました会衆の上に豊かに注がれますように。
脳波検査を受けたことがある方どのくらいおられるだろうか？ 睡眠障害になったり、あるいは、交通事故等により強い衝撃を頭に受けたりすると脳波を測定する。 あとは、エピレプシー、発作を起こしてしまう患者さんにもよく脳波測定が行われる。 脳神経を専門とするあるドクターが教えてくれた。脳波は、大人の場合は、比較的安定していて、通常の脳波と異常な脳波を判定することは比較的容易だが、子供の脳波は、もともとだれも不規則で、子供の脳波測定をしたところで、その子供の脳波が異常なのかどうかわかりにくい、と語っていた。
子供のときは、ひきつけ（てんかん発作）を起こしてしまう確率が大人に比べとても高い。 みなさんの中にも、小さい時、私はひきつけを起こしたという方もいると思う。 しかし、かなりの確率で高校生ぐらいまでの間に、発作は起きなくなる。 要は、子供の体が成長過程にあるように、脳だって発達過程にあり、子供が何人かいたら、その子供達全員に、大人と同じような振る舞いを期待したって無理である。 ひきつけを起こさないまでも、騒いでしまったり、落ち着きがない子もいるだろうし、いろいろなことが起こる。
さて今日与えられている聖書の話をしたい。こどもの日にちなんで選ばれた聖書の箇所だが、今日の箇所の少し前で、イエスはどのような話しをしていたかをちょっと述べておきたい。
ルカ18章前半で、イエスは二つのたとえ話をしている。 最初は、まず、裁判官はなかなか取り合ってくれないような人だったが、しつこく裁判官のところにやってくる未亡人がいて、その裁判官がその未亡人の訴えを聞くという話し。当時の社会状況からして、未亡人の主張はなかなか認められないような状況があったのだろう。しかし、その裁判官が未亡人の訴えを聞いた理由は何であれ、神は、正しいことを義とされる。 いわばソーシャルジャスティスについてイエスは弟子たちに教えていた。
二つ目のたとえ話は、ファリサイ派の人と徴税人の二人が祈る話。ファリサイ派の人は、自分は神の善しとすることをしており、自分は正しい人間だと思い祈っていた。しかし、徴税人は、言ってみれば意地の悪いような人であり、自らも自分の罪を認め神の赦しを求めた。 すると、その徴税人こそ、神の目には義とされる人となることが話されている。 弟子とイエスたちは、社会正義の問題や、信仰生活における罪の告白といった、真剣な問題について語り合っていた。 そこに、イエスの評判を聞いて、子供たちが、ちょっとでもイエスに触ってもらえたらと思い、子供たちを連れて来た人々がいた。 弟子たちは、大切な話をしている最中だし、騒いだり、落ち着きのない子供たちが来るところではないと判断して、連れて来た人々を叱りはじめた。 ところが、イエスは、子供達を連れて来た人々を呼び集めるため、「子供達を私のところに連れて来なさい。」と言われ、また弟子たちに向かっても、「妨げてはならない。」と言われた。 弟子達は、子供たちを連れてきた人々を、追い返すことこそ、主イエスの考えておられたことだと思って、叱ったところなのに、主のお考えは全然違っていた。 さらに驚いたことに、イエスは次のようなことを述べられる。 「神の国は、このような子供たちのものである。子供たちのように神の国を受け入れる人でなければ、決して神の国に入ることはできない。」
弟子たちは、自分たちこそ、神の国を引き継ぐ者という気持ちでいただろう。しかし、イエスからは、神の国はこのような子供達のものであると言われてしまった。しかし、この話、いったい私たちにどういうことを語りかけているのだろうか？ それは、決して、弟子たちが神の国を引き継げないということではない。復活節にあって、弟子たちは、なかなか復活したイエスの存在を信じられなかった話をしてきた。 しかし、なかなか信じられなかった弟子たちも、結局はイエスの伝道活動をするようになり、現代では70億人の世界人口のなかで約20億人がキリストを信じる者になってきているようだ。
イエスが死んで葬られて復活して弟子たちの前に現れることまでしても、イエスの赦しと愛をなかなか信じられなかった弟子たちに対して、子供達はどうなのだろうか。 子供たちは、大人の目からは、落ち着かず、わあわあ騒いでしまう存在に思われてしまうが、主が考えられていることは、主イエスの赦しと愛は、子供たちに簡単に伝わり、彼らこそ主を受けいれ、すぐに神の国を引き継いでいける存在になる。
「神の国は、このような子供たちのもの。」と主イエスが2000年前に言われ、この言葉は聖書に記述され、代々伝えられ強調されてきたことは、とても大きな意味がある。 この世において主イエスの体の構築は現代も続いており、その過程において、子供のたちは、とても大切な存在である。
イエス・キリストの体、教会、そして神の国の建設は、子供達のように素直に神の愛が永遠に続くということを信じられる、そのような信仰者たちに引き継がれていく。子供の日を祝うとともに、私たち大人も子供達のような気持ちで、主イエスに従う群れになってまいりましょう。復活の主、イエス・キリストの平安が、皆様方そして子供達、さらには子孫の上にも、豊かにありますように、復活の主イエスキリストの御名によって祈ります
To Whom Does the Kingdom of God Belong?

How many of you have experienced EEG (Electroencephalogram) test? When you have a sleep disorder, a serious car accident, a seizure or anytime there is head trauma, doctors order an EEG.
One doctor shared with me that it is relatively easy to diagnose adults’ EEGs, however, it is generally very difficult to diagnose children’s EEGs. Children’s EEG patterns are so different from adults’ EEG patterns. It is difficult to define what is baseline abnormal for children.
Did you know that a high percentage of children experience seizures? You may have experienced one or two seizures yourself when you were younger…or you may know parents whose child had a seizure.
However, about 70% of children stop having seizures as they grow older. My point is that even if children never have a seizure, their brain activity is very different from adults’ brain activity. Children’s brains are still developing, so it’s unfair to expect them to have an adult’s patience & attention span. If children have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), it’s even harder for them to sit still and pay attention.
Let’s talk about the text chosen on this Children’s Day. I would like to explain a little bit about the context of what Jesus and his disciples were talking about regarding today’s text (which I read a few minutes ago).
Luke chapter 18 starts with two of Jesus’ parables. The first one was about an unjust judge (who didn’t fear God and didn’t care about people’s opinions of him) and a widow. The widow kept coming to the judge for him to grant her an appeal. Although, it was a time when widows’ social status was low, in general, the unjust judge granted her appeal; he didn’t want to keep being bothered by her. Unlike the unjust judge God gives justice to His people because it’s right and not only for convenience’s sake.
The second parable was about a Pharisee and a tax-collector, both of them came to pray at the temple. The tax-collector humbled himself, confessed his sins and asked for God’s mercy and God said the tax-collector was truly righteous. The Pharisee who was arrogant and thought he was sinless and already righteous was rebuked by God. These two stories were serious matters regarding social justice and confession of sins.
While Jesus and his disciples were talking about these important matters, people brought youngsters to be touched by Jesus since they heard that Jesus could save them. Disciples sternly told them, this is not a place for children to visit and they ordered them to go home.
Although the Bible is not clear whether these children were epileptic or had any behavioral issues like attention deficit disorders, generally speaking, I believe their parents or guardians had difficulties raising these children.
So, Jesus said to people who brought their children and infants to him, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them!” His disciples thought the children would be an unwelcome distraction and Jesus’ warm response was totally opposite of what his disciples expected.
Further, Jesus amazingly said, “For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” “Anyone who doesn’t have their kind of faith will never get into the Kingdom of God.”
Although disciples were thinking that they would be the ones who would inherit the Kingdom of God, it sounded as if they would not necessarily do so. What do Jesus’ words really mean? I do not think that Jesus meant that the disciples would not inherit the kingdom of God; rather he was reminding people that they need to believe with a faithful heart and not just say they believe.
During this Easter season, I’ve been talking about how it is difficult to believe in the Resurrection, even for disciples. Even though, at first, they did not believe Jesus was the resurrected one, the disciples eventually realized that Jesus did conquer death. When his disciples believed he was the Risen Lord, the rest of their lives were changed so that they accepted the mission of the Kingdom of God, to make all people in all nations baptized, as Jesus told them. Even adults may be changed to faithful children by the Grace of God.
From adults’ perspectives, children are often restless and sometimes noisy, however, God’s love, as Jesus thought, is easily passed along to children, and they may easily become successors to the Kingdom of God.
It is so meaningful that Jesus’ words, “The Kingdom of God belongs to children such as these.” were written in the Bible, repeated and re-emphasized from generation to generation. In this world, the building of the Body of Christ is still ongoing and children are an important part of that process.
The Body of Christ, the church, and the Kingdom of God, are inherited by faithful people like children who believe with an innocent heart and know that God’s love is enduring. In honor of Children’s Day let us follow our Lord as faithful children would. May the Peace of the Lord be with you in the name of the Risen One, Jesus Christ!
