もっと大きな業 ヨハネ 14: 8-17
集まりました会衆の上に父なる神と子なるキリストそして聖霊による恵みと平安が豊かに注がれますように！
聖霊降臨祭をもって復活節が終わる。 50日間にわたる、復活節、皆様方、それぞれに有意義に過ごされたことを信じる。 あっという間に50日過ぎて、「あら、私何もしてなかったわ」と、思われている方もいるかもしれない。 例えそうであったとしても、それは神の名において意義のある50日間だったと思う。
3月31日の主の復活日からはじまって、毎週日曜日、一度も休まずに来られた方、何回か休んでしまった方、あるいは、イースターと今日だけたまたま来たという方もいるかもしれない。 どのような50日間を過ごされたとしても、今日、この場に来られたのは、或いは、今ウェブに掲載されたこの原稿を読んでおられるのは、本当に意味のある事と信じる。
さて、三者択一の問題を出したい。 主の復活からペンテコステまでの50日間、イエス・キリストの使徒たちは、いったい何をしていたのだろうか？ １）すぐに伝道活動を開始した。２）すぐに社会奉仕活動を開始した。 ３）何もしていなかった。何番だと思われるだろうか？ 答えは、３）が一番近いと思う。
本日与えられた福音書は、イエスが十字架に架かる前日の晩に使徒たちに話していたこと。色々な話の中で、イエスはこんなことを語っておられた。：「わたしを信じる者は、私の行う業を行い、また、もっと大きな業を行うようになる。 わたしが父のもとへ行くからである。」
さて、イエスの使徒たちは、イエスの十字架の死と復活が起こった後、すぐに、イエスの行っていた業を行っていたのだろうか？ たとえ彼等はイエスから直接学んできてはいたが、イエスの死と復活が起こった後、彼等は何もできなかった。 この復活節の説教で何度か触れてきたが、使徒たちは、最初はイエスの復活なんて全然信じられず、ばかげた話とまで言っていた。復活したイエスに会ったところで、使徒たちは、次に何をして良いのかわからず、ぶらぶらしていた。何人かは、昔とった杵柄(きねづか)で、漁師に戻ろうとも思った。 しかし、何度か復活したイエスに会うことで、だんだんと変えられていったのは事実。 変えられていったとは言え、イエスの語られていた「もっと大きな業」を行うようになるには、ペンテコステまで待たなければならなかった。
そして、ペンテコステ当日、いったい何が起こったのだろうか？ 今日、読まれた使徒言行録2章には、まさに、ペンテコステ当日の様子が描かれていた。「炎のような舌がわかれわかれに現れ、一人ひとりの上にどどまった。 そして一同は聖霊に満たされて、さまざまな言語を話す人々が、互いにわかりあえるということが起こった。」
ペンテコステに起こった出来事は子供や大人さえも怖がらせてしまうような話ですらある。 しかしもっとも重要なことは、このペンテコステ当日に起こったことをきっかけとして、全能なる神から、イエスの使徒たちに、炎のような聖霊が宿ったこと。聖霊が確かに一人一人に下り、逃げ腰だった使徒たちが、イエスの述べていた、「もっと大きな業」つまりイエスの使命を、実行できるようになったこと。使徒たちは、エルサレムからはじまって、病の人々を癒したり、また、ユダヤ人か異邦人かを問わず、どんどん人々をイエス・キリストを信じる者に変えることができた。使徒たちは、いろいろなところに遣わされていく。 ペテロはローマまで行くことになり、ローマカトリック教会の初代教皇とされている。 アンデレという使徒は恐らくギリシャに来て、ギリシャ正教会の主教に。 マタイはエチオピア、熱心党のシモンはエジプトへ行き最初のコプティック教会の主教に。また、マタイはインドまで伝道に行ったともされる。 新約聖書が記された時代、飛行機も車も無い、しかもキリスト教が迫害される時代、ただ聖霊によって炎のような力が与えられ、イエスの名において奇跡的な癒しを行い、つまり社会奉仕活動であり、また驚くべき宣教活動を行うことができた。 聖霊が使徒たちを燃え上がらせ、イエスの言われていた「もっと大きな業」が行われた。
実は、エルサレムと地中海周辺で起こった聖霊降臨後の300年余りの出来事は、1500年間キリスト教に殆ど縁がなかった日本においても起こり、現代でも起こり続けていると思う。聖霊が多くの方々に働き、教会・社会に仕え、宣教活動が行われていくということが起こっている。フランシスコ・ザビエルは、聖霊により炎のような力が与えられ、日本に来て、伝道活動を行った。現代のようなポルトガル語と日本語の辞書もないのに、彼は日本人と会話し、毎日何百人もの人がイエスを礼拝しにきた。政治的な圧力からキリスト教は禁止され250年あまりの鎖国があった。1850年に日本のドアは再び開いたとはいえ、キリスト教禁止は続いていたので、英語教師や医師としてキリスト者たちが日本に入り、そして遂に、1870年代には、日本人もキリスト者になれることになった。以後140年のキリスト教伝道の時代が続いている。 といっても、16世紀の伝道時代とあわせても、日本のキリスト教伝道の歴史は200年と少しの年数しかたっていない。ローマだって、キリスト教を本当の意味で受け入れるのに300年かかっており、日本においてもっと多くの方々がキリストを受け入れるのには、まだまだ時間がかかるのかもしいれない。でも、カリフォルニアに住んでいる我々はどうなのでしょうか？ なぜ私たちは、カリフォルニアでクリスチャンとして生活しているのでしょうか？ 統計によれば、日本に住んでいる人々より、海外にいる日本人・日系人の方が洗礼を受ける人数が多くなっている。 しかも、この南カリフォルニアにいる日本人・日系人は、海外の中ではとても多い。 確かに、聖霊の炎は働いており、この地で日本語を話して生活をしている方々が洗礼を受けるようにいろいろな方々が遣わされている。 そして、みなさんも、その一部。 洗礼は、ある牧師とある受洗者だけの関係ではなく、聖霊に導かれた人々がいろいろな形で働いて、洗礼ということがおこる。 この復活ルーテルでも、これからもさらに洗礼者が出続けるように、皆様がさらなる聖霊の働きを受け周りの方々が洗礼を受けられるように働かれるように祈る。 それは、イエスのおっしゃっておられた、「もっと大きな業」の一部を成すことで、大きな喜び。

Grace and Peace to you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit!
Pentecost is the last day of the Easter Season. During the last 50 days, I believe you all had a meaningful season. Some people might say, “I did not do anything during Easter.” Even doing nothing is OK. I still believe that your 50-day period was meaningful in the name of our Father, God.
From March 31, there are people who worship every Sunday and there are people who can’t make it every Sunday. Or there may be people who come only at Easter and Pentecost. Whichever category you belong to, I believe it is so meaningful that each one of you are worshiping the Lord, Jesus Christ, on this Pentecost Sunday.
Let me ask you a simple multiple choice question. What were the apostles doing for the first 50 days between the resurrection of Jesus and Pentecost? 1) They were evangelizing people, 2) They started social ministries, and 3) They did not do anything missional at all. What do you think the answer is? The answer is 3….
The Gospel read today is what Jesus was saying on the night before he was crucified. Among the many words he spoke, there was one sentence:
“Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.”
Were the apostles doing what Jesus was doing right after Jesus’ death and resurrection? Even though they learned from Jesus directly, they were doing nothing right after Jesus was resurrected. I have preached several times during this Easter season that the apostles could not believe Jesus’ resurrection, in the beginning, and they thought that it was ridiculous.
Even though the apostles saw the resurrected Jesus, they did not know what the next step was and they were wondering what to do. Several of them returned to the Sea of Galilee and thought about becoming fishermen again.
However, while they met with the resurrected Jesus several times, they were gradually changed. Even though they were changed men, they waited until Pentecost to start doing greater works than Jesus was doing.
What happened on Pentecost? Acts Chapter 2 was read a short time ago, it says “Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.”
The things happening on Pentecost frightened children and some adults as well. But, the most important thing to remember about the day is that the apostles were ignited by the power of the Almighty. The Holy Spirit obviously came down to each of the apostles and despite them being evasive and shirking their missional duties; the Holy Spirit ignited them to do greater works than Jesus was doing.
The apostles started from Jerusalem, healing sick people and turned both Jews and gentiles to believers in Christ. The apostles were sent many different places. Peter was sent to Rome and Roman Catholics say he is the first Pope. Andrew probably went to Greece and became the first Greek Orthodox Bishop. Matthew, it is told, went to Ethiopia. Simon the Zealot was sent to Egypt…he was perhaps the first Coptic Bishop.
In Biblical times, they did not have any airplanes or cars and the apostles traveled during a time when Christianity was persecuted. They traveled and did remarkable works only because they were ignited by the Holy Spirit.
Actually, what happened in Jerusalem and Mediterranean Sea between 2000 and 1700 years ago, similarly were happening in Japan. For Japanese people, Christianity was not a part of our lives for 1500 years after Jesus was born.
However, Francisco de Xavier was ignited by the Holy Spirit and came to Japan for Christian missional work. Even though there were no Portuguese to Japanese dictionaries, he could speak Japanese and evangelized people. Everyday hundreds of Japanese came to him and worshipped Jesus.
Since that initial evangelical period, politically, Japan closed the country in order to ban Christianity for 250 years. In the middle of the 1800s, a missionary came to Japan. Even though Japan opened its doors in 1850, Christianity was still banned. So to get around the ban, missional medical doctors and English teachers came to Japan. Finally, in the 1870s, Japanese people were allowed to become Christians. If we calculate the number of years that missional work was done in Japan, it is only two hundred years or so. Even in Rome, it took over 300 years until the Government accepted Christianity and for it to become a popular religion. Therefore, it may take many more years for a significant portion of the Japanese people to become Christians.
However, how about Japanese speaking people in California? It is said that the number of people baptized in Japan is probably less than the number of Japanese people baptized overseas. Especially in Southern California, there are many Japanese people living here compared to other parts of the world.
Here in southern California, the Holy Spirit is actively working now and igniting Christians to evangelize Japanese people. And you are part of the people ignited by the Holy Spirit. Baptisms are part of the Great Commission. My prayer is that more Japanese people are baptized in this Resurrection Lutheran Church, in the coming years, by you (our congregants) who’re ignited by the Holy Spirit. Amen & Glory Be to God.
