神の国はどこにあるの？ ルカ 9:52-61
主イエス・キリストの恵みと平安が集まりました会衆の上に豊かに注がれますように！
クリスチャンなので、私はほかの宗教のお葬式には出ません。という方おられると思う。皆さんはどうだろうか。 どなたかそのような方をご存知だろうか？
しかし、私の叔母は、本当に熱心なカトリック教徒で、結婚相手の叔父は、熱心な仏教徒だった。宗教の違いにもかかわらず、お互い、尊敬し合い、とてもうまくいっていた夫婦だった。 叔父が先に亡くなったが、叔母はもちろん叔父の信仰していた仏教のしきたりに従ったお葬式をし、叔母が亡くなったときは、叔父はもういなかったが、子供達がカトリック教会でのお葬式をした。
与えられている福音書、イエスの弟子になるなら、あたかも親の葬式もせず、また、家族への挨拶もせずに、イエスに従ってこなければならないようにとられてしまうことがある。
この聖書箇所は、多くの日本人クリスチャンに、日本神道や仏教で行われる両親の葬式には出てはいけないということを言っているのか？ そんなことは無いと思う。 与えられた福音書の中に描かれたストーリの背景を理解する必要がある。 イエスと弟子たちが、エルサレムへの道を急いでいる最中だった。 聖書には、イエスの十字架の死と復活まで何日あったのか明確には書かれていないが、おそらく数週間しかなかったのだろう。
イエスは、その短い期間にひとりでも、イエスの弟子を増やし、神の国の福音を語る弟子が一人でも増えて、十字架の死と復活を証する集団になって欲しいと願っていたことと思う。時間はあまりなかった。だが緊急性があった。 神はキリストの弟子の家族にはやさしくないという事ではなく、弟子たちが真にキリストの弟子になるのには、厳しいものがあるということを教えている。決してイエスは、家族としてなされなければならないことが重要ではないということを言っているのではない。
今日の箇所のポイントは「神の国」という言葉に表されていて、家族の葬式にあるわけではない。ルカ福音書だけで、「神の国」という言葉は35回も使われているが、葬という文字はわずか数回出てくるだけ。イエスの弟子になるということは、家族に挨拶もせず両親の葬式もせずにイエスに従うということがポイントではなく、事実として、イエスが人々を神の国に招いていること、そして弟子になろうとする本人が、イエスの神の国への招きを真剣に受け取り、その神の国を述べ伝えることが最大のポイント。しかし、神の国への招きを受け取り、その神の国を述べ伝えるという事は、どういうことなのだろうか？ 「神の国」とは、たとえばエルサレムのような、どこかの場所を指しているのだろうか？ あるいは、なにかの状態を言っているのだろうか？
「神の国」という言葉、もう少し掘り下げて、考えてみたい。日本語聖書では、「神の国」と訳されているが、英語聖書は”Kingdom of God”と訳されている。”Country of God” ではない。 ギリシャ語の意味からしても、”Kingdom of God”が正しい訳といえる。それで、「神の王国」という言葉で考えて欲しい。国と王国の違いは、国といういうと、政治形態にかかわらず、広い意味をもってきて、お国柄なんていう言葉の通り、文化、領土、言語なども意味してくる。 しかし、王国という言葉を使うと、王が支配する国となる。 そして、「神の王国」と言うならば、神が王となって支配する国という意味になってくる。それは、領土や文化の範囲を意味するのではなく、神が支配するという状況を指している。
2000年前イスラエルの人々は、ユダヤ教のリーダが引き続きイスラエルを支配するのか、あるいはローマ帝国がイスラエルを支配することになるのかわからないでいた。 そのような中で、イエスは人々を神が王となって支配する国、「神の王国」に招いた。「神が支配する国」という言葉には、人々が従っていける希望があった。さて、みなさん、何を思われているだろうか？ みなさんの中には、「神の王国」は天にあって、召されたときに、行くところという思っておられるだろうか。 先週、佳代子さんのメモリアルサービスをした。佳代子さんは、「神の王国」に行かれた。 それはそれで事実だ。
今一度、言うが、「神の国」というのは、「神の王国」。神が支配している状態をいっている。ある時点から神の王国でそれまでは神の王国ではないというものでもない。
全宇宙、この地球上のすべての場所を含めて、実は私たちは、神が支配されている状態の中で生きている。 したがって、神の王国への招待を受け入れたからといって、必ずどこどこに出かけるというものでもなければ、他の宗教を嫌うというものでもなく、神が支配していることを認めるということ。 神はもっとも優先されるべきもので、わたしたちは自分の命が神の支配にあることを受け止め、喜びあふれて神の王国を述べ伝える。
今週、アメリカ合衆国は独立記念日を迎え、好き嫌いにかかわらず、勇気を象徴する赤と真理を象徴する白と正義を象徴する青のアメリカ国旗を目撃することになる。このアメリカという国を象徴する、赤と白と青の国旗は、18世紀後半に生きた、クウェーカ教徒で、フィラデルフィアに住んでいた、ベッティ ロスという女性が刺繍して作ったのがはじめとされる。クウェーカ教徒たちは、ピューリタンとして最初にアメリカにやってきて、彼等のもつ才能と強い信仰により、アメリカ合衆国設立に多大な影響を及ぼしている。
そのような多くのクウェーカ教徒たちの協力で作ったアメリカ国旗であるので、その赤には神を信じることにより与えられる勇気、白は神ご自身が真実、そして、青には神の信仰による正義が、織り込まれているように思う。今年の独立記念日、イギリス支配下から解放されたアメリカの政治的な独立を記念するばかりではなく、国旗の中にさえも含まれている神の王国、神の支配される状態に、ぜひ、思いをめぐらせよう。 そして、この一週間が、みなさまがまた新たに、すでに神の支配の中にいることを覚え、他の方々にも「神の王国」を宣べ伝える機会となりますように。

There are Christians who do not attend funerals of other faith traditions. Are you one of them? Or do you know anyone who behaves this way?
One of my aunts was a faithful Catholic Christian and her husband was a faithful Buddhist. Despite different faiths, they respected each other’s beliefs and got along very well. When the husband died first, she had a funeral for him at a Buddhist temple, and when the aunt died, her children held the funeral at a Catholic congregation.
The Gospel today, seems to say that when a person becomes a Christian disciple, he or she needs to follow Jesus without doing his/her parent’s funeral and even without saying farewell to the family.
Does this text suggest for many Japanese Christians should not attend even their parents’ funerals with other faith traditions?
I do not think so. I believe we need to understand the background of the story. Jesus and his disciples are on the journey to Jerusalem. Although it is not written down, I believe, the number of days until Jesus’ death and resurrection, in Jerusalem, was only several weeks away. In that short period of time, Jesus wanted more disciples to follow Him and proclaim the “Kingdom of God” and he also wanted them to witness the death and resurrection. There wasn’t much time left and there was a sense of urgency. God is not heartless but commitment to Christianity is serious. Becoming a Christian is not meant to be a lukewarm decision. Jesus is not saying family obligations are unimportant, but he is saying serving God should be your first priority.
The key issue here is the “Kingdom of God” and not about disciples’ relatives’ funerals. In the Gospel of Luke alone, there are 35 times where the phrase, “Kingdom of God” appears, but the word funeral appears only a few times. It is not the point whether or not they attend their parents’ funerals but it is the fact that Jesus invites people to the “Kingdom of God,” and if one becomes a disciple, this person should truly accept the invitation to the Kingdom and proclaim it. However, what does it mean to accept the invitation to the “Kingdom of God” and proclaim it? Is the “Kingdom of God” a certain place like, the city, Jerusalem? Or does it mean a certain condition of being?
Let us think about the phrase, “Kingdom of God” a little bit deeper. In most Japanese Bibles, this is translated as “Country of God.” The word “Kingdom” does not appear in many Japanese translations; I do not know why. If we check the word in Greek, I believe Kingdom is more appropriate than Country. So for Japanese speaking people, please think about the word “Kingdom.”
So what is difference between “country” and “kingdom”? If you use country, whatever its political situation is, if there is a king or not, it defines culture, territory, languages, and so on. But if you say Kingdom, it means a government where a king rules. And if you say the phrase, “Kingdom of God,” God becomes the king and rules everything. I believe that “Kingdom of God” does not just mean earthy or spiritual territory, but it defines the situation that God rules and governs everything in our lives.
2000 years ago, people wondered if Jewish leaders would continue to be governors of Israel or if the Roman Empire would control them. In that situation, Jesus invited people to the “Kingdom of God,” the condition that God becomes King and governs. In the phrase, “Kingdom of God” there is a hope that people may follow. What are you thinking about? I understand that there are people who think that we go to the Kingdom of God after we die. For example, Kayoko passed away a month ago and now she is in the Kingdom of God. That is true.
But let me say this again, the “Kingdom of God” is the condition where God becomes the king and controls. This does not necessarily mean a specific territory or a certain timeframe. All over the universe and all over the earth, we are living in the condition where God rules and governs regardless of whatever our political systems are or whatever our territorial situations are. Therefore, the invitation to the “Kingdom of God” by Jesus does not mean to go to certain places or to hate certain faith practices, but to recognize that we already are in the condition where the King, our God, the Lord Jesus Christ, governs this world. We are already in the Kingdom of God, but there are still so many people who do not know this yet. As Christians, God must be our first priority; we must accept God’s lordship over our lives and joyfully proclaim this.
This week, we will celebrate the Independence of the United States. You will see lots of American flags with the colors – red, white, and blue – representing courage, purity, and righteousness. It is told that the first national flag was made by Betsy Ross who was a Quaker. Quakers (or as we should call them Friends) were Puritans that came to America and with their talents and strong faith that helped shape our country. Therefore, I believe: Red symbolizes courage given in believing God, White symbolizes the purity that is God himself, and Blue symbolizes righteousness through faith in God.
This week, let’s celebrate not only the political independence of the United States, but also wonder about God’s dominion even, as it’s symbolized, in the American flag, because all of us are in the “Kingdom of God”. I hope and pray that this week will be another opportunity for each one of you to accept that we are already in the “Kingdom of God” and invite others to recognize God’s dominion. May God continue to watch over our families, our troops, and our Nation. Amen.
