「Always Being Made New」というテーマが掲げられたすばらしい総会だった。

Always Being Made New
アーメン “Fire and the Holy Spirit” 2013 8 18
Luke 12: 49-56 Pr. Hitoshi Adachi

May the Holy Spirit bless each individual here in this Sanctuary! Amen.
During last week, the ELCA Churchwide Assembly was held in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The theme of the assembly was “Always Being Made New,” and it was a wonderful assembly. The theme came from the second Corinthian 5:17-18: “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God.”
During the assembly, there was a Presiding Bishop election. The current Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson was not reelected, but as “always being made new,” a female Presiding Bishop was elected for the first time in ELCA history.
The Presiding Bishop-elect is Pastor Elizabeth Eaton, she is currently serving as Bishop of Northeastern Ohio. Although I could not watch everything that happened during the assembly, while I was watching the assembly via internet, on Wednesday, I was impressed and moved by the four candidates’ speeches.
When I was listening to the questions and answers between the chair and candidates, I happened to think that since God is always making people new in Christ, conflicts and divisions are eventually settled. Not always according to human timelines, but God does deal with them according to His plan.
Now I would like to dive into the Gospel text. I would like to ask you a couple of questions, while reading the Bible, have you ever thought “why these kinds of things written in the Bible?” “What was your reaction when you read the Gospel text today for the first time?” Jesus said, “I came to bring fire to the earth” and “Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!” What was Jesus trying to say? The Gospel today is read during the middle of August, almost every three years (Luke 12), during this month the Japanese experienced the end of the World War II. Therefore, as a people it gives us a lot to think about.
Many years ago, many years before I started my seminary education, I thought that God allowed the atomic bombs over Japan to end WWII, and felt that was symbolic of Jesus coming to bring fire to the earth. Now I do not think that was right at all. So what is the meaning of the “fire” that Jesus would bring?
In order to read the Bible, sometimes we have to take time focusing on certain verses in one book. However, it is important to consider and to take into account of the flow of the story of the Bible. Also, other important factors to consider are what the Old Testament says and what other epistles say related to the text, especially focusing on interpreting Jesus’ words.
It is important to notice that Jeremiah said, “Is not my word like fire, says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” I think it is also important to notice that faith in Christ overcomes many challenges and difficulties.
As for the flow of the Bible, the existence of Jesus Christ caused difficulties and divisions. As a matter of fact, the presence of the Savior, Jesus Christ, bothered Jewish leaders. They took advantage of Roman Empire leaders in Jerusalem and with their help, Jesus was crucified. Not only was Jesus crucified, but also, after the Pentecost, there was a large-scale Christian persecution that lasted almost three hundred years.
However, even in the midst of such difficulties, the catholic Christian church has existed almost 2000 years after the Pentecost. What happened on the day of Pentecost? Of course, the Holy Spirit came down, but what was the image that the disciples saw? According to Acts Chapter 2, “Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them.”
One of the images of the Holy Spirit, that is important in the Bible, is “fire.” So how about exchanging the word “Fire” with the phrase “the Holy Spirit”? “I came to bring the Holy Spirit to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!”
As we now live in the 21st century, let’s think about what Jesus said. As it is written in second Corinthians, “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation,” in this world, someone is always made new through the Holy Spirit that Jesus brings even today. And through newly baptized people, the whole church is recreated and reignited by the Holy Spirit. As a result there are always disagreements about what is happening even though God is creating a new direction, and conflicts or divisions continue happening. As Jesus himself became a stumbling block for Jewish leaders, the female Presiding Bishop-elect Elizabeth Eaton might be a stumbling block for certain Christians because certain denominations still do not ordain women.
However, even in the midst of conflicts and divisions, the Holy Spirit, brought by Jesus Christ, is working like fire. Although healing the divisions and overcoming the challenges may not seem possible in humanity’s eyes, the Holy Spirit is present and working in our midst.
Again, the Holy Spirit is like fire and it can go through all the difficulties and challenges. As we go forward, we are always made new and at the same time we face challenges and divisions, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, i.e. cleansing fire, we are OK and we are shown a new path.
May the Lord, our Savior, Jesus Christ recreate the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Resurrection Lutheran Church, Japanese Ministry, and renew each individual everyday; and may the Holy Spirit, like fire, settle all challenges and divisions in each individual, Resurrection Lutheran Church, and in the church at large! Amen
