ルカ 17:5-10
主イエス・キリストの恵みと平安が会衆の上に豊かに注がれますように！
特に私はクリスチャンではありませんとおっしゃる方、たくさんおられる。クリスチャンになるということはどういうことなのか？ 私は科学を信じているので、聖書に書いてあることは信じられず、キリスト教も信じられませんと言われる方がいる。そのように考える方は、クリスチャンになるという事は、すべては神が創られたものと片付けてしまい、宇宙学、量子力学、細胞学などの世界も、探求が止まってしまうのではないかと勘違いされている面がある。
宇宙の研究でも、量子力学の研究でも、クリスチャンが多くの研究を行っており、とてつもない大発見をして、理論や定理に気がついている。神を信じて、すべて神にゆだねているのだから、聖書の内容を信じよく読んでいる以外には、何もしていないように思われかねない信仰者が、なぜ、そんなに科学界で大きな貢献をしているのだろうか？
ある意味、今日の聖書の箇所を読んでいくと、そのような疑問に答えられる面が出てくるのだと思う。 本日の箇所、使徒たちとイエスキリストとの会話だ。
使徒たちが、イエスに、「私たちの信仰を増してください。」というお願いをしているところから始まっている。その箇所の少し前を読むと、イエスが使徒たちに、なんども赦すように教えている。
使徒たちは、ほとんど永遠に赦すなどということはとてもできない状況にも遭遇したのではないかと思う。それでもイエスが赦しなさいと言うので、使徒たちは、信仰を増すことによって、徹底的に赦せるようになるのではないかと思い、イエスに「私達の信仰を増してください。」とお願いしたように思われる。
「信仰を増してください。」というお願いについて、イエスは信仰の大きさや量を測る話をするのではなく、からし種というもっとも小さい物の一つを引き合いに出す。さらに、もっとも大きいものの一つとして桑の木も用いて話す。 地上に根をはっている大きな桑の木が小さなからしダネのようなものによって海に動かされ根をはるという話をする。
からし種は小さいものの象徴で、それが信仰で、桑の木が地上から海の中に動いていってしまうことは大きなものの象徴であり、それは人間が考えられる事や行いをはるかに超えている話。 それにしてもイエスはどうしてこんな話をしているのだろうか？
キリスト教の信仰者になる、あるいは洗礼を受けるということは、ルーテル教会では、牧師が十戒、信仰告白、主の祈り、罪の告白、洗礼と聖餐について学び、洗礼を受けるように進めている。 しかし、だからといって試験をするわけでもなく、また作文を書いて、神について、このように知的に考えているから、あなたはクリスチャンです、と牧師が洗礼をほどこすわけではない。
信仰者になるという事は、自然とか宇宙の存在と、聖書に書かれた神の存在を、きっぱりと分けて考えるような考え方の問題ではなく、むしろ、どのようなことに出くわそうが神なるイエス・キリストを信じ、完全に主にゆだねて生きるという、生き方の問題。
神なるイエス・キリスト、聖霊でもあるキリストを信頼して生きるということは、実体のないものが最初に天と地を創造され、植物や動物もすべてを創造したということ信じることであり、21世紀に信仰者になるということはいってみれば、実体のないものに賭けて生きていくギャンブルのようなものかもしれない。
信仰に生きるということは、主がすべて司ってくださるという点において、私は理知的に考えられるような存在ではないし、いつも正しく考えて正しい行動をす人間でもなく、よく過ちをおかしてしまう人間であることを認めて生きること。 そのような欠点や過ちにも関わらず、イエスキリストの御心により、私たちの人生は大きく改善していく面がある。
それゆえ、キリスト信仰者は、神に仕え、あくまで謙虚に神からいただいた才能や恵みを、神の栄光を顕すために用いる。 そして、それはまた、私達が生きる世界についての理解をも深めることになっていく。
クリスチャンの謙虚な生き様のなかに、父なる神が働いてくださり、主イエスが入ってこられ、主は洗礼と聖餐、さらに、神の御言葉も伴って、クリスチャンを義なるもの、聖なるものとさえしてくださる。
その結果、神は信仰者たちに偉大な行動をとるように、偉大なことに気がつくようにと導かれる。 それは、神が赦してくださるということと人々を赦すということも偉大なことだが、多くの困難の中、不幸の中におられる方々に奉仕するように導かれるし、とてつもない複雑な現象に気がつくようにも導かれることもある。 たとえば、コペルニクスは15世紀まで信じられていた天動説ではなく地動説を説いたことで有名だが、彼はローマカトリック教会での重職を担っていた信仰者だった。私は、信仰に生きるなかで、神がコペルニクスにとても重要な概念である地動説を導いたと思う。
イエスの信仰のゆえに、つまり神にゆだねる生き方をする中で、主なる神がクリスチャンの中に働いてくださり、たいへんな事に気がついたり、あるいは、世の偉業を成し遂げるということが起こる、それはあたかもほんの小さなからしダネが、大きな桑の木を動かしてしまうイメージだ。 しかし、どのような偉業を成し遂げても、「主なる神が働いてくださって、私はしなければならないことをしただけです。」というイエスの言葉にあったへりくだった言葉を述べるようになるのではないだろうか。
キリスト教の信仰は、科学的な探求とか発見と排他的な関係にあるものではない。私は、神が私たちに科学的な解明する力をも与えてくださっていることに感謝すべきだと思う。 神が私達に与えてくださっている信仰にも科学にも感謝し、主なるイエスキリストを賛美したい。アーメン。
Not “Why?” but “How?” Luke 17:5-10

There are many Japanese people who say “I am not a Christian.” However, what do you mean “Christian”?
Sometimes, we hear, “Since I believe in science, that is why I do not believe the Bible and I’m not a Christian.”
People who think that way might have a perception that if you become Christian, you’re supposed to believe that “everything is created by God and you automatically ignore or disbelieve scientific discoveries like quantum theory, astrophysics, and cellular research.
However, in the world there are many scientists who are Christians and they have made important discoveries and proven many scientific principles.
Christians have entrusted everything to God…and for non-believers, it seems like Christians do nothing other than just believe in the Bible and disbelieve modern science. If this were the case, why have Christians made significant contributions to science?
In a sense, I believe that the Gospel scripture today answers that question, although it may be difficult for many of us to reconcile. The scripture today is the conversation between Jesus and his apostles.
The apostles asked Jesus to, “Increase our faith.” A paragraph before today’s text, Jesus guided them to forgive and forgive and forgive…that is a difficult thing to do in most cases.
“Therefore, the apostles recognized that following Jesus was difficult since Jesus ordered them to forgive almost forever. Then the Apostles thought they might have to do the difficult thing by increasing their faith. However, they did not know how they might increase their faith on their own. That is why they asked Jesus to increase their faith.”
In reply to their request, Jesus told about one of smallest things, which is a mustard seed. And then, he talked about the mulberry tree, which is an example of something large. He showed that something as large as a mulberry tree could be moved by the smallest amount of faith. Our faith in God allows us to accomplish great physical and intellectual things.
The mustard seed represents the smallest thing, faith, and the moving of the mulberry tree represents the biggest thing, which is something beyond what human beings can do alone…what does Jesus want to tell to his apostles?
To become a person who has faith (or to be baptized) especially for adult baptism in the Lutheran Church, pastors teach the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, Confession of Sins, Holy Baptism, and Holy Communion. However, we do not test how people understand these matters. Or it is not mandatory for people to write compositions or essays about how baptism candidates think about these matters or Christianity in general. Faith is not only meant to be an intellectual exercise.
To become Christians it is not necessary to consider God, Nature, the whole universe, or Biblical understandings separately, rather, we should live trusting everything in the Lord, Jesus Christ, which is “how to live taking delight in the Lord.”
In this 21st century contemporary world, trusting God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, is to trust something that is non-physical. Trusting that something non-physical created heaven, earth and all plants and animals asks us, as Christians, to bet our lives on something that is on some level uncertain.
To live in faith is to accept that we do not understand everything, we do not always think or behave correctly, and we often make mistakes, but despite our failings we realize we greatly improve our lives when we live according to Jesus’ will.
Therefore, a Christian must be willing to serve God and exhibit humility and use his or her God-given talents (whether they are physical or intellectual) to help glorify God and increase our understanding about the world we live in.
In the midst of Christians’ humble lives, the father, God works, we allow Jesus Christ to come in, and He sanctifies our lives through Holy Baptism, Holy Communion, and with the Living Word.
As a result, God lets Christians realize tremendous things. This includes forgiving others, not only forgiving wrongs or helping the less fortunate but also many other complicated matters as well. For example, Copernicus advocated the Heliocentric model of the universe when most scientists at that time still believed in the Geocentric model. He was in a very important position in the Roman Catholic Church during the early 16th Century. I believe God made him realize this important concept about our universe.
Because of faith in Christ, through living humbly with Christ, God works through Christians and makes us realize or do tremendous things, like a small mustard seed of faith can move a large mulberry tree from the ground to the sea. Even though we can discover or do important things, we can just say, “We have done only what we ought to have done!” like Jesus mentioned in today’s text.
Christianity is not opposed to scientific inquiry and discovery, but Christians should acknowledge and be grateful that God gave us our intellectual capacities in the first place. Praise God for all He has given us and through our continued faith may we glorify him. Amen!
