救い主イエスが集まりました会衆を祝福し、主イエスの御言葉を豊かに与えてください。
悪魔がいると思われている方、何人位いるだろうか？ 現代、悪魔とか悪魔の誘惑とか話したところで、どれだけの方がまともに話し相手になってくれるだろうか。 もちろん、そのような話をとても興味を持っていて悪魔のイメージを持っている方もいる。 怪獣とかお化けのような悪魔がいると信じている方もいる。 また、家に仏壇や神棚があったり、なにか、新興宗教のつぼだとか、そういうものの中に悪魔の存在があると信じている方もいて、私の友人でとても保守的な牧師は、そのような置物こそ悪魔で災いをもたらしているという方がいたりする。 私は、もっと違う種類の悪魔の存在があると思う。今日の福音書箇所はそのようなことを考えさせられる。 現実的なことで、私たちが日常出会うことのなかに、私は確かに悪魔の存在というか悪魔の誘惑があるのだと思う。 今日の聖書の箇所はそういうことを考えさせられるところだと思う。
本日の福音書箇所は、まず、「イエスは悪魔の誘惑を受けるために、霊に導かれて荒れ野にでかけた。」とある。 「悪魔に会うため」ではなく、「悪魔の誘惑を受けるため」とあるので、誘惑にポイントがあることを認識しておきたい。 イエスが40日間の断食をして空腹を覚えた時、一つ目の誘惑は「石をパンに変える。」ように言われる。それは、神聖なものに頼るのではなく、物質的なものに頼るような誘惑が襲ってきたのだと思う。 二つ目の誘惑は、「神殿の屋根から飛び降りよ。神であるあなたが天使たちに命じれば、助ける。」と言われる。これはいったいどういう誘惑なんだろうか？ 天使たちに命じて、過剰なまでに自分だけの利己的に身の安全を確保する、そして、自分以外の社会のことは考えないで生きていこうとする誘惑があるのだと思う。 三つ目の誘惑は、「悪魔にひれ伏せば、国の繁栄を与えよう。」とあるが、この世的な財産とか権力を持とうする誘惑があるのだと思う。
これらの誘惑に対して、イエスは、「人はパンだけで生きるものではない。神の口から出る言葉で生きる」「主なる神を試してはならない。」「あなたの主を拝み、ただ主に仕えよ。」と、申命記の８章3節、６章１６節、そして６章１８節を引用して答えられる。 これらの誘惑をする者とイエスの会話は、現代の私たちに何を、教えてくださっているのだろうか？ 一つ目のパンに代表される物質的なものには頼らないようにと言っているように思われるが、生きる糧というのは、なくてはならないものだ。
また、二番目の身の安全を確保することだって、普段の健康保険とかあるいは老後のための年金ということは、大切なことだと思う。 イエスは物質的ものや身の安全を確保するということでは、生命保険に入るとか、健康保険をも否定されているのだろか。 さらに、財産とか資産も生きる上で、住む家や日頃の買い物をしたりする上で、ある程度は必用。また社会というものは、政府やその他の多くの組織で成り立っているので、リーダと呼ばれる人たちに、ある程度の権力を委ねるということは大切なのだと思う。 イエスが、物質、身の安全、財、権力をすべて否定されているのでは無いと思う。 しかし、主なる神との関係から離れて、自分の物質的な欲望に没頭しないように、あるいは、自分だけの身の安全を過剰なまでに確保しようとして、医療・生命保険に加入したりしないように。 あるいは、神と隣人への関係以上に、自分だけの財産とか、自分本位の権力を維持しようとすることへの警告を、イエス様は発してくださっている。
この世の中、毎日、神との関係を危険にさらす悪魔の誘惑がたくさんある。物質的な宣伝、医療保険あるいは年金を勧誘する、あるいは、土地とか建物の財産とか権力をむさぼるような教育を受けることが良いような宣伝がされすぎているような面がある。都市部に住むと、平均で4000もの宣伝を目にし、その多くは、悪魔の誘惑に近い。一番大切なことは、物質的なものに頼ったり、年金とか生命保険とか、あるいは財産や権力ではない。主なる神を畏れ敬うこと。それは、すなわち、神との関係と隣人との関係をしっかりした上で、自分の物質的なこと、身の安全、そして、財産のことも考えれば良い。灰の水曜日からレント、受難節に入った。イースターまでの40日間を、神を畏れ敬うとの関係を第一にして、御言葉を読み、神なるイエスに祈る、友や家族を誘う、礼拝に出る、恵みに応答して捧げる、生活をされますように。

How many of you believe that the devil exits? If you speak to someone about the devil or the devil’s temptations, how does he or she respond? Of course, there are people who are very serious about the devil. Some people have a certain image of the devil, something like a monster or an evil spirit. For example, if someone has a Buddhist altar, a small shrine, or a sort of religious urn, some conservative Christians believe that these things are “of the devil.” However, I believe there are different devils in this world. The text today makes us think about the existence of the devil.
The Gospel text begins with, “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” Interestingly, he was led by the Spirit and it also says, “to be tempted,” in other words, the purpose was not meet with the devil, but to be enticed by the devil. After Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, the devil’s first temptation was to command stone blocks to become loaves of bread. This was the temptation to only rely on material goods rather than to rely on divine sustenance as well. The second temptation was to “throw yourself down from the top of shrine, and angel’s hands will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.” What does this temptation look like? I think it is a temptation for your own security rather than the safety of society. The third temptation was “if you fall down and worship me, these kingdoms of the world and their splendor are yours.” It is a temptation for worldly wealth and power.
Responding to these temptations, Jesus said, “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” “Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.” All of Jesus’ responses are from Deuteronomy, Chapters 8 and 6. What does this conversation teach us today? For the first one, bread, is representing material goods or our flesh. As for the second one, it deals with bodily safety. Does Jesus deny the importance of material goods and the body? I do not think so. We need to eat and we want a sense of security in our lives.
Further, the third temptation relates to property and power, after all, we need places to live. Since we have governments, we need leaders to have certain power and authority. Jesus understands the importance of those, however, he is warning us, not to turn away from God in order to gain more property and power. He is warning us not to turn away from God in order to “keep up with the Joneses.” We should not focus on gaining more worldly goods, lest we forget how much God blesses and provides for us.
In this world in which we live, there are many temptations that jeopardize our relationships with God and our neighbors. There are so many product advertisements we see every day. According to scholars, each one of us encounters over 4,000 advertisements every day. Many of these advertisements try to persuade you that you need the latest products or services to live a happy, important life. These advertisements tempt you, in a very real sense, to turn away from God and His plans for you. Worldly goods are not more important than your relationship with God. We, as Christians, should learn to better serve God and stop placing great importance on material things. What matters most is fearing God and being obedient and faithful to Him. After you focus on and build a good relationship with our Lord, Jesus Christ, only then should you worry about worldly matters like possessions and power. We entered into the Lenten season beginning on Ash Wednesday. During this journey of forty days until Easter, I hope and pray that each one of us: listens to the Word of God, prays to Jesus, invites friends to church with Christ’s love, attends services, and give generously in response to the grace that Jesus abundantly gives us.
