集まりました会衆の上に、主イエスキリストの恵みと平安が豊かにありますように！
何か困難があったとき、自分の何かが悪くてこれは天罰がくだったのだ。 とか、あるいは、自分の先祖が何か悪いことをしたために被っている困難だと信じている方もいる。あるいは、ヒンズー教や仏教に伝わっている輪廻思想によれば、自分が今生まれ変わっているが、前世で、なにか悪いことをしてしまったので、しょうがないと思う方もいたりする。物は考えようだが、確かにそのような説明を受けて納得し、今の困難を我慢することができるということもあるのかと思う。しかし、そこには、真の赦しや過去の罪からの解放ということが起こるのだろうか悩んでしまう。
本日与えられている聖書、目の見えない人の人生が、イエスによって大転換する話。 彼は「生まれつき目が見えない」ので「それは両親の罪の結果なのだろうか」と弟子たちは考えた。しかし、イエスは個人の罪とその人の病気や障害の関係をはっきり否定する。イエスは「本人が罪を犯したからでも、両親が罪を犯したからでもない」(3節)。そして「神の業がこの人に現れるためである」と言う。イエスは原因や目的を述べて目の前の現象を説明するのではなく、これから起こる出来事に弟子たちの目を向けさせる。そして、目の見えない人の目の上に、泥につばをペッペッと吐いて、こねて塗るというようなことをした後、「シロアム」という池に行き、洗うように言われる。そしてその日は安息日だった。すると、見ることができなかった光景を見れるようになる。ここで、生まれつき見ることができなかった彼の人生がイエスが行い命令したことによって大逆転する。
本日の聖書箇所の後半では、のちのち、彼は実際にイエスに会って、イエスを見ることになるが、目が見えるようになる時点までは、彼はイエスを見ることができていない。しかも、たまたが通りがかったイエスと弟子たちが彼に話し始めており、彼にとっては神、イエスがどういう人か何もわかっていなかった。それにくらべ、聖書の中に描かれているファリサイ派の人々は何が正しいことか、強い信念があり、いわば、神のことを悟っていた。 それは、目が見えない人がいたら、それは過去の罪の結果であるとし、安息日に何かをすることは罪であるため、安息日に奇跡は起こせないという信念だった。 ファリサイ派の人々のそのようなところに、宗教の落とし穴がある。 霊的な盲目といっても良いかと思う。
私は、ファリサイ派の人々だけを言っているわけではなく、現代のキリスト教信者と言っている我々の中にも、そのような危険性を否定できない。 「私には、こうこうこうだからこうだ、という確信があり、だから私は正しい」と言って、その信念を見事に語っているようなキリスト教信者には、ファリサイ派の人々と同じように、霊的な落とし穴がある。そして、本当の神の御業を見れず、信念が根底から崩されてしまうようなところがる。「私はイエスキリストを見た。」という方もおられるが、本当に私たちは、イエスを見ているのだろうか？ 聖餐式でいただく、ウェハーとぶどう酒の中に、イエスを本当に見ているのだろうか？ 私たちは、イエスが毎週毎週、霊的な視力を回復してくださるようにして聖餐を受けているのか、あるいは、イエスを見るといいながら、霊的には盲目で、自分の固定観念に陥っていないだろうか。
イエスは、本日の聖書箇所の最後で、「今、『見える』とあなたたちは言っている。だから、あなたたちの罪は残る。」と言われる。 イエスは自分なりの理解で、「イエスを見える。」と話すことに対して、警告を与えてくださっているように感じる。 たしかにイエスは2000年前に来られたが、私たちはイエスの再来を待つ身である。「イエスは来た。だけどまだ。」という時代に生きている。 私たちは、今日の聖書にあるような、盲目の状態から目が見えるようになった人に見習いたい。固定観念にはとらわれず、イエスのほうから顕われ、与えてくださるこの上ない愛と憐れみに感謝する。 四旬節の後半に向かう中、この礼拝中の御言葉と聖餐を通し、イエスに会うことができるように、そして主が私たちに、十字架を担ぐ力を与え、そして、愛なるイエスと共に、歩むことができるように祈る。アーメン
“Truly Seeing Jesus or Meeting Jesus”
John 9:1-41

Whenever people have difficulties in their lives, some people think that the difficulties are God’s punishment for the supposed wrongs that these people have done. There are Buddhists or Hindus that believe in the cycle of death and rebirth, and if bad things happen; it is because they think they did something wrong in their former lives. Everything depends on your mindset, but I wonder if people truly believe they can be forgiven and truly freed from the cycle of wrong doing? I am not sure if just being patient during hardships will help.
The Gospel text today, is the story of the blind man, and how Jesus changed his life. Because the man was born blind, the disciples thought the man’s own sins or his parents’ sins caused his blindness. However, Jesus refuted the relationship between sins and the man’s blindness, Jesus said, “Neither this man nor his parents have sinned” and “God’s works might be revealed in him.” Jesus did not try to explain the cause of the man’s blindness, but he let his disciples see what happened when He interacted with the blind man. Then, Jesus spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent).
Then the man went and washed the mud off and came back able to see. His life was completely changed due to what Jesus did.
Although in the last portion of the text, this person met with Jesus and saw him. However the miracle happened after he washed his eyes. Before there was no way for him to normally see Jesus since he was born blind. Also, Jesus and his disciples happened to go in front of him and they started to talk about him. There was no frame of reference for the blind man to know about Jesus, the Savior and the Lord, our God, and his disciples. Compared to the blind man, the Pharisees had some firm beliefs about their religion and what was right. However, I would say they were caught up in their own prejudices. They believed that the man’s blindness was an outcome of sin. They, also, firmly believed that working on the Sabbath was sinful. Therefore, it was obvious to them that Jesus couldn’t perform any miracles on the Sabbath. Actually in the Pharisees’ firm beliefs, there is a pitfall: spiritual blindness. If people convince themselves they already know God’s plans or are more righteous than their neighbors, they run the risk of not hearing God’s Word and missing true miracles. The Pharisees are an example of humanity’s spiritual blindness that is worse than the man’s physical blindness.
I am not only criticizing the Pharisees in the Bible; even in today’s Christianity people can be spiritually blind. There are Christians who say “These are my convictions about such and such and I know I’m right.” Someone might articulate his or her convictions very well, however, he or she would still risk being caught up in their own prejudices. I have heard people say, “I see Jesus and understand him.” However, can we really see Jesus in the sanctuary each week? Do we truly see him when we consume the wafer and wine? Have we allowed Jesus to restore our sight or are we still spiritually blinded by our prejudices?
Jesus said, to the Pharisees, at the end of text today, “Now you say ‘We see’, yet your sin remains.” I believe Jesus is warning us today that there is a pitfall if we continue to base our beliefs on only our own understanding. Only Jesus can truly restore our spiritual sight and give us the true foundation of belief – God’s Word. In this 21st century, we are still awaiting Jesus’ coming. We hope we’re like the blind man, whose sight is miraculously restored. If we do not give into our preconceived notions about faith and our prejudices; our spiritual blindness will be cured. We’ll be able to truly see Jesus and give heartfelt thanks for the Grace and Love He pours into our lives.
In the second half of this Lenten season, may we meet Jesus, our Savior and Lord this week, through the Word and sacrament! May the Lord encourage us to walk and carry the Cross together with you, our most beloved, Jesus Christ! Amen.
